Fashion, Beauty, Hair looks which now look dated

What comes to mind?

Is there any looks you consider abit dated now but weren't 5-10 years ago perhaps?

This is subjective but...

Thin eyebrows
Depending on how hair and make up is done, dyed burgundy/dark purple/cherry coloured hair
Highlighter on brow bone (although I love this and still indulge in it!)
Leggings and a skirt/dress (again another one I love though)
Weather and occasion dependent of course but wearing high heels/wedge heels for generally browsing about in town rather than boots, sandals or trainers
Leggings, brown knee high boots, shirt, chunky cardigan or jumper
Blonde and black highlights in streaks or bands (super obvious rather than blended) - used to be somewhat popular in the 2000s, ok in the 2010s but would look out of style now
Pandora bracelets
Thick rimmed eyeliner
Spider eyelashes
Eyeliner on the waterline with spider eyelashes
Concealer style nude lips (as opposed to nude lips with a slight pink/mauve tint which would look modern)

I suppose it depends on the age of who you ask, because I think flared or bootcut jeans look dated. Even though I know they’re supposedly back in right now, and that’s because I was around the first time they were in and then saw them become dated and can’t seem to get past how dated they look.

Middle parts are more current than side parts now apparently, but again, middle parts make me think of the 90s so I’m the age where I saw them go out of fashion and can’t get past that. If you’re too young to remember then it probably feels new and fresh.

Makeup wise, I think the whole heavily contoured, drag style makeup that was popular a few years back now looks dated.

SallyCinnabon · 14/05/2021 22:38

Oh and I agree with @wiltingflower high stiletto heels feel dated now, a short block heel or flat looks a lot more modern.

2o21o514 · 15/05/2021 06:41

Interesting. I agree with some of those points.

I think, going abit much with jewellery, particularly costume jewellery. Overly layered long necklaces and bracelets. It seems more minimal is in...

Skinny Jeans and Ankle boots? Although I still love this look!

Black eyeliner all round the eyes.

Lots of layers in hair
Asymmetric hair styles
Undercuts
Graduated bobs especially really exaggerated ones
Glossy lips
Very skinny jeans
Dying hair one block colour
Unnatural hair colours - rainbow, green, blue etc
Big round glasses frames
Little round glasses frames
High heels
Ballet flats
Huge bags
Culottes
Pedal pushers

EdgeOfFortyNine · 15/05/2021 07:50

High heels, especially if the wearer can't walk properly in them!
Deep suntans or overdone fake tan.

Floisme · 15/05/2021 08:09

The whole bodycon silhouette: Lycra'd dresses, tube skirts, leather leggings, pretty much anything that requires Spanx. Skinny jeans and I'm sorry but biker jackets as well - too closely associated with skinnies although I'm sure both will be back. Long, straightened hair.

MariLwyd · 15/05/2021 08:46

Leggings or skinny jeans with long tops

Ohpulltheotherone · 15/05/2021 09:42

Don’t come for biker jackets! I’m not having it Sad

But I do know what you mean, I think if they are part of your overall everyday look I think they still very much work. But out of context they probably do like a bit naff.

Body con dresses are dated absolutely, anything ultra glam feels out of touch.
Very high heels.
Really short denim shorts
Very distressed jeans
Ballet pumps
Canvas deck shoes like cheapy Toms
Very chunky trainers are even starting to drop out now

SallyCinnabon · 15/05/2021 09:54

I have a leather biker jacket I bought in the 90s and it has worn really nicely and I will never give it up, never ever 😊

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/05/2021 10:00

Big chunks or steaks of highlighted hair, it’s ideally all done subtly now.

Definitely thin eyebrows.

Is a smoky eye dated? Seems to be more in to get heavily pigmented eyeshadow now in a more shimmery colour.

I miss lipgloss!! I mourn not being able to get Juicy Tubes anymore.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 15/05/2021 10:09

Poker straight hair.
Waterfall cardigans.
Statement necklaces.
Ugg boots.
Long tiered skirts with a big chunky belt.

SallyCinnabon · 15/05/2021 10:12

@FleetwoodRaincoat

Poker straight hair. Waterfall cardigans. Statement necklaces. Ugg boots. Long tiered skirts with a big chunky belt.
My 2003 wardrobe staples 🤣
SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/05/2021 10:15

Vest tops work as your actual top- I had a series of colourful vest tops for nights out, worn with flared jeans.

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2021 10:15

Scarves as a fashion accessory. They were so popular 10 years ago but nowhere to be seen now.

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2021 10:17

Does everyone agree re statement necklaces? I thought they were still on...

And what's the fashionable alternative? several layered thin necklaces? or is that a bit 3 years ago?

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 15/05/2021 10:25

Biker jackets
Biker boots - not the laced ones, though I don't call them biker boots any way
Dresses over leggings
V deep suntan particularly as people age - true of male & female
Indoor scarves

Readyorknot · 15/05/2021 10:30

Ugh leather biker jackets.

Agree with:

Dainty heels
Waterfall cardigans, chunky highlights, graduated bobs, uggs, ballet flats; all more than 5 yrs past it anyway
Chunky trainers

Also:
Over hairsprayed curls/beach waves
Tunics/long tops
Tea dresses
Fit and flare
Bell sleeves
Flared sleeves
Peasant everything
Dainty boots
Fitted coats
Fitted anything

wotchhha · 15/05/2021 10:31

I think it does depend on ones individual style as I know people with long straight hair or who wear lots of jewellery and it really suits them.

However I agree with some examples the overly contoured look, skinny jeans on men. Lots of teenagers wearing the 90s stuff looks dated to me but I think it's because normally trends that are recycled move on a bit or are mashed up with other looks however I see people in carbon copies of what I wear down to the shoes & hairstyles.

OublietteBravo · 15/05/2021 10:36

How can “fitted anything” be dated? Confused Are we meant to be walking around in sacks?! Grin

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/05/2021 10:42

I for one will never give up skinny jeans. I have a short torso but nice long legs and they suit me- especially with heeled ankle boots.

LunaNorth · 15/05/2021 10:44

Reading this, I think the only way to avoid looking ‘dated’ is to shave your head and walk around in the nip.

Lol it's an hourglass's nightmare 😂

I agree with a lot of these, but also agree on how current and up to date the person looks. I'm short and petite and so much looks frumpy on me without the extra height of a heel or a wedge during the summer months. While I have embraced the trainers with dresses look, I will still wear wedges and heels to walk around the high street sometimes, and I don't think it looks dated.

I think if several of the above are combined then it can look dated, but not necessarily just one
