Fashion, Beauty, Hair looks which now look dated

What comes to mind?

Is there any looks you consider abit dated now but weren't 5-10 years ago perhaps?

I think it's fascinating watching something fall out of fashion and then come back around again.

Ecruelworld · 15/05/2021 11:36

It’s so interesting seeing stuff that I wore growing up come in again. I’m over 60 and over the years have seen so many looks re-surface that were 60, 70s and 80s styles. So many times I wished I’d not got rid of things that would have been current again.

I was about to add indoor scarves but it’s been mentioned. I used to have a whole drawer full that have been donated to charity shops. I just can’t imagine wearing one now.

wotchhha · 15/05/2021 11:38

One thing that pisses me off about fashion these days & particularly trends is that it's seems much more homogenous if that makes sense. I'm an 80s child & growing up there were definite trends depending on which "group" you were in & different trends for teens, adults, etc & high street shops had their own identity. Now my teenage cousin, me, my mum can turn up wearing the same variation of an outfit.

Now every shop latches onto a trend so it seems to get oversaturated very quickly & shops don't tend to offer an alternative. I don't want a square toed sandal this yr thanks just like I was already over clumpy chelsea boots last winter. Apologies for my rant but I used to love clothes & fashion & now I struggle to find things I want to buy*.

*If I had a designer budget this would be less of an issue.

lindyloo57 · 15/05/2021 12:09

I too have a drawer full of scarfs, not all are indoor though, are summer outdoor ones over too?

MariLwyd · 15/05/2021 12:16

Jeggings!

About 10 years ago teenage girls were very into what I called ‘granny chic’ - jeggings, floral longline tops, chunky plastic ‘pearl’ necklaces and cardigans with very layered hair and a deep side parting. I’m sure most teenagers wouldn’t be seen dead dressed like that these days.

C25KDropOut · 15/05/2021 12:20

French manicures Sad

lindyloo57 · 15/05/2021 12:40

Jeggings, why are they still every colour in m&s

TheMoth · 15/05/2021 12:41

I've never really followed trends that well. I was a mish mash of punk/ goth in the 90s then was plunged into normal clothes as a teacher. I tend to like vaguely channelling different decades. Often in the same week. My Mad men era was great, but I was in my 20s, so could carry it off. I'd just look frumpy now. I tend to go for a Katherine Hepburn vibe mainly for work.

goose1964 · 15/05/2021 12:47

I think this thread highlights the difference between fashion and style. I think the looking plastic phase is starting to die down.

SpanishFancy · 15/05/2021 13:03

Lol it's an hourglass's nightmare 😂

There is no way I am 'embracing' the buffet tent dress. I have fitted summer dresses (and winter pencil skirts with fitted tops) in colours I know suit me and I will continue to wear them.

I am probably the only person under 65 who just can't get my head round wearing trainers with dresses. This has been in for so long I'm hoping it'll be on it's way out soon Smile.

I am pleased to see flares back though!

Cocolapew · 15/05/2021 13:12

@LunaNorth

Reading this, I think the only way to avoid looking ‘dated’ is to shave your head and walk around in the nip.
Shaved heads are very 1980's Luna 😊

Grin

but even then there's the dilemma of which looks dated: waxed lady garden or 70s bush?

Readyorknot · 15/05/2021 13:46

The 70s/80s unstraightened frizzy wavy big hair (on the head!) is coming back in apparently.

Me too, pp. It just looks (to me) so wrong.

AnaViaSalamanca · 15/05/2021 15:07

@Time40 me too. I’m mid 30s. It’s actually becoming a very dated look thankfully

AnaViaSalamanca · 15/05/2021 15:11

Skinny jeans
Fitted jewel toned dresses with heels and big hair
The junior working girl look (pencil skirt and ticked in shirt with flats and a longchamps bag)
The dress with leather/denim jacket, trainers and cross body bag look
The skinny jeans and boots with poncho and hat look

Maireas · 15/05/2021 15:33

@SmidgenofaPigeon

I for one will never give up skinny jeans. I have a short torso but nice long legs and they suit me- especially with heeled ankle boots.
I hear you! You will never get me out of my skinnies!
Readyorknot · 15/05/2021 15:35

@OublietteBravo you are meant to wear whatever you want. The question was what is dated, and it seems the oversized aesthetic is in atm.

Standrewsschool · 15/05/2021 15:45

A graduated or undercut bob
Blue (or other colour) -rinse hair

Scarves
Cold shoulder tops?

There seems to be a big shift in fashion this year.

popularinthe80s · 15/05/2021 16:23

The junior working girl look (pencil skirt and ticked in shirt with flats and a longchamps bag)
The dress with leather/denim jacket, trainers and cross body bag look
Trainers with dresses

Very short, hourglass here with bunions. (Get your coat, you lucky girls).
I would love to look more on trend, but I have come to rest at these three points and can't divert now.

ballroompink · 15/05/2021 16:49

Longline tops (that have to be repeatedly pulled down over the bum)
Knee-length skirts (I have quite a few but they just don't feel right at the moment!)
Tunic tops with leggings or jeans
Ballet flats

I've never done trainers with a dress or skirt as I just don't feel it would look right on me but if this look is dated, what's 'in' in terms of casual shoes to wear with dresses?

Ozzybobz12 · 15/05/2021 20:20

Hi, you can get Juicy Tubes again now, Lancome brought them out again recently

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/05/2021 20:22

@Ozzybobz12 wow! That’s so good to know, thanks Smile

FleetwoodRaincoat · 15/05/2021 20:24

Cold shoulder tops (shudder)

wheresmymojo · 15/05/2021 21:04

This is why I've transitioned to a sort of 'Parisian chic' capsule wardrobe this year.

CBA to keep up with trends anymore!
