Fashion, Beauty, Hair looks which now look dated

What comes to mind?

Is there any looks you consider abit dated now but weren't 5-10 years ago perhaps?

Cold shoulder tops, wedge trainers, belted Barbour biker jackets, pink coats, ugg boots, Adidas superstar, skinny jeans, mental clashing patterns, statement necklaces, pointed heels, platform heels.

TheRuralLife89 · 15/05/2021 23:05

Oh dear, according to this thread everything I wear is dated :S
So what is actually fashionable these days? Things that are actually suitable for everyday wear, that is...as opposed to tops that are really a bra and huge sack dresses...that's what I see for sale in the shops/online, yet no one on the street actually wears this stuff. I'm looking to update my wardrobe after having a baby and just don't know what to buy anymore...

carolinesbaby · 15/05/2021 23:17

Reading this thread, is there anything that's ISN'T considered dated?
What should we be wearing to look 'up to date'?

BlueGoblin · 15/05/2021 23:27

I would also to know what I should be wearing this summer!

And what comfortable footwear with a maxi dress if trainers are out??

ToooOldForThis · 15/05/2021 23:33

I'm really excited if links necklaces are back, I loved them!

LunaNorth · 16/05/2021 01:01

I love my trainers with a dress. Luckily, I’m in the semi-rural North, where fashions take a bit longer to catch on and die off, so I reckon I’m good for another couple of years yet.

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 05:41

What should we be wearing to look 'up to date'?

Giant sleeves, dresses with midriff cut outs. Bra tops & long skirts. Crocs, clogs & mules.

LunaNorth · 16/05/2021 07:29

I have Crocs!

Floisme · 16/05/2021 08:06

I'd love to know what goes on in my head. Take tube skirts - I wore them non stop for a few years, loved the shape they gave me and the freedom of movement. And now if I put one on all I feel instantly bored and I look in the mirror and see all these lumps and bumps I hadn't noticed before.
Or high waisted trousers: when they're in fashion I love how they make my legs look longer and show off my waist, but then they fall out of fashion, and all I see is how they make my arse look bigger.
It's deeply odd.

Floisme · 16/05/2021 08:35

Sorry I didn't finish my post! So those of you who say you don't follow fashion and just wear what suits you, do you never get this moment where something you used to love starts to look like shit? Do you never look at a piece of clothing and think 'OMG this makes my arse look huge - how did I wear it for so long without noticing?'

Yes and the weird thing is, I don't feel like I'm following an edict from the Ministry of Fashion - I really thought that tube skirt suited me and now I really think it looks like shit.

Maireas · 16/05/2021 08:49

I think we all get that, @Floisme, and it's a strange thing. You often get threads on here, talking about clothes that are "frumpy" or "mumsy", but a few years ago, a flouncy tiered dress with poufy sleeves would have been just that! Perceptions change. I look at photos of myself and think - why did I have a perm? Because everyone did, and flat straight hair looked dated!

TableNiner · 16/05/2021 09:05

I agree anything too fitted or neat looking looks dated, though I am quite petite and easily swamped so carry on regardless.

Oversized looks much more on trend, baggier jeans, big shackets and blazers and coats. Not really ideal as this uses up even more cheap fabric and must require even more cost cutting in other areas in the context of fast fashion.

Also showing a lot of cleavage. And obviously no high heels.

In fact it's almost like the fashion is to hide any "womanly' features. I always thought fashion would get more and more unisex (until we are walking around like in Star Trek). I also think there is something feeding in from the new wave of feminism/#metoo.

I wore a lot of vintage when I was young, partly because it was a bit different. But then vintage became fashionable and the prices shot up and that was the end of that.
That's the most annoying thing I think - when something you like and that you thought was off the radar becomes fashionable. Brogues are another, and the half tucked in shirt thing (which I've always worn because I'm naturally scruffy). You have a few minutes of looking super cool and then they go out of fashion again and you're left, beached.

SprayedWithDettol · 16/05/2021 09:44

@LunaNorth

Reading this, I think the only way to avoid looking ‘dated’ is to shave your head and walk around in the nip.
In the nip! I love it, I haven’t heard that expression for years. 🤣
ThorFull · 16/05/2021 10:04

Oh jeez. This thread is depressing.
I’m a tall hourglass with long straight hair. I have thick hair so undercut for ease. I wear fitted things, fit and flair dresses, skinny jeans... everything I wear has been mentioned on this thread.
I put a lot of effort into my appearance and I think I look ok 🤷🏽‍♀️

carolinesbaby · 16/05/2021 10:27

@wotchhha

Giant sleeves, dresses with midriff cut outs. Bra tops & long skirts. Crocs, clogs & mules.

Nobody needs to see my belly in a midriff cut-out dress or bra top.

Sorry, but I'm going to carry on wearing wider jeans with no holes in, DMs, shirts and cami tops etc and hang whether I'm on tend as I am aware I won't be!

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 10:33

Same!

The lines I won't cross are above the knee, sleeveless, high necked and anything requiring hair straightening. With most other looks I quite enjoy messing around to try and make it work - and I think you often can - but those are no-go areas for me now. I should probably add low waisted jeans too.

Floisme · 16/05/2021 11:00

Oh and heels - I'd never go back to them but I've not worn them for years.

OublietteBravo · 16/05/2021 11:06

It’s funny isn’t it?

I’ve definitely noticed that I gravitate towards wearing longer skirts/dresses and looser jeans at the moment.

And I love being able to ignore heels and wear trainers with practically everything.

On the other hand I mourn the fact that low-rise trousers aren’t in fashion. I have a really short body and anything high waisted practically touches my bra strap.

And I’m hoping the leisurewear trend will dissipate soon. I don’t look good in joggers at all - they make my bum look enormous!
