Fashion, Beauty, Hair looks which now look dated

What comes to mind?

Is there any looks you consider abit dated now but weren't 5-10 years ago perhaps?

I also find it fascinating how colours come and go. I sometimes think the wrong colour can date an outfit more than the style of the clothing.

@ThorFull

Oh jeez. This thread is depressing. I’m a tall hourglass with long straight hair. I have thick hair so undercut for ease. I wear fitted things, fit and flair dresses, skinny jeans... everything I wear has been mentioned on this thread. I put a lot of effort into my appearance and I think I look ok 🤷🏽‍♀️
I'm exactly the same!! The latest styles are an hourglass's nightmare. I've ventured away from the skinnies, but at 5'4 I still have to wear heels or wedges to look taller so that the wide legs don't make me look super short and awkward.

I wear looser fitting dresses, but they really don't do my figure justice so always wear with a belt.

I love heels and dressing up, but sadly no where to go anymore these days 😕

AntennaReborn · 16/05/2021 11:19

Long acrylic nails are (thankfully) finally out

Floisme · 16/05/2021 11:20

I honestly don't get this idea that wide leg trousers make you look shorter. I'm 5'3 and I think skinnies are far less forgiving of my short legs - there's nowhere to hide.

I can see why a loose fitting dress might do you no favours if you're hourglass but think wide leg trousers with a fitted top or a shirt, or mom jeans work really well if that's your shape.

carolinesbaby · 16/05/2021 11:29

If we're to wear trainers with virtually everything, what about special occasions? Am I still allowed a heel with a dress for a wedding, for example?
(Not my wedding!)

Floisme · 16/05/2021 11:44

Oh come on people. We've had years of wall-to-wall killer heels, of people telling me, 'You can't wear that with flats, it'll look odd', and then trying to flog me hair straighteners.

I Took No Notice.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 16/05/2021 11:48

I saw beautifully dressed lady my age (50) the other day, who somehow looked so "dated" to me: black tights, high heeled courts, body con dress, hair in blond /brown stripes. She looked nice but dated, made me ponder fashion

My beloved skinny jeans with ankle boots now feel dated too

I think the silhouette has changed dramatically, to jumpers that are wider than they are long, with very voluminous sleeves. The trousers now are loose or baggy. Shoes mainly chunky trainers or chunky sandals or doc Martin style boots

I feel it's a big fashion change moment, where "fitted" or "flattering" clothes now look dated.

Smart leather shoes look dated too

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 16/05/2021 11:55

I am the least fashionable person on the planet so this thread is fascinating.

I think knee-high boots look dated. I’ve barely wore mine in the last year. Although I presume if I hang onto them they’ll come round again in a few years.

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 12:15

I can't ever see highlights going out of fashion!

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 12:16

Court shoes feel very dated now, I only see Kate Middleton wearing them.

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 12:18

I love the chunky boots & sandals that have been in the last few years but so struggle with the change in clothing silhouette. Not flattering with boobs at all.

Delatron · 16/05/2021 12:43

I think that’s the problem. For most people (unless you’re a teenager) the current fashions are really unflattering and I don’t want to walk around looking awful.

I just compromise a bit. So a tent dress, no I’m not wearing it but I’ll happily wear a long floaty skirt but team with a tighter t-shirt on top. Jeans, mum jeans are awful. Instead of skinnies I have some slim fitting ones which still look a bit dated but are my favourite or girlfriend jeans which are baggier and I feel less flattering.

I’m not getting my belly out at 45!

Cocolapew · 16/05/2021 12:47

The checked shackets, mom/ripped jeans and DMs that the teens are wearing atm look dated to me because I wore them in the 80's/90's.
Same as long dresses, though I wore them with biker boots or DMs.

Marimaur · 16/05/2021 12:49

FWIW, I think it’s fine to like whatever you like.
But noticed these where everywhere a few years ago and now look a bit stale:

Filled-in, squared-off eyebrows
Kardashian-style Contouring
Wide brim felt or wool hats (in winter)
Grey everywhere in your house

I keep seeing teenagers atm with y2k style mini shoulder handbags - haaaated them at the time, they still look awkward now!

I do love the trend for curly haircuts (the ‘curly shag’).

Demortuisnilnisibonum · 16/05/2021 12:49

Straight hair is back in - yay! According to a recent fashion article, anyway.
Deep fake tans or deep natural tans look dated. Light tan and a glow - lovely and fresh.
Exaggerated lip fillers look dated.
Overtly sexy clothes look dated.
I feel that a fresh and more natural look is more current.
Confidence and looking comfortable in what you are wearing feels more modern, regardless of your clothes, hair or make up. Head up, shoulders back, tits forward Grin

OhDear2200 · 16/05/2021 12:57

I’m confused what shoes am I supposed to be wearing with dresses? No heels? No ballets? And no trainers?

Am I allowed to wear little ankle boots with a dress? Or is that dated?

I went to zara yesterday and was horrified at the number of crop/bra tops. Has no one noticed that it’s bloody freezing at the moment? All I could think is ‘well I can’t wear a vest with that’

OhDear2200 · 16/05/2021 12:59

Also I think the thing with straight hair is that those of us with curly hair are now being empowered to embrace them (about time too!), so for some of us unless we want to spend hours and hours straightening our hair curls/waves are most definitely back in!

Floisme · 16/05/2021 13:10

I honestly think a lot of trends are fairly easy to swerve. I don't like frilly dresses or big sleeves or showing my belly so I stay away. But I do like wide leg or barrel leg trousers, cropped trousers, silk shirts and short wide jumpers (with a T underneath) so I'm wearing them instead. I never wear heels or straighten my hair and I've never found it a problem or felt dated because of it, although it probably helps that my hairdresser understands wavy hair and knows me well.

I agree that a shift in silhouette is harder to ignore because everything changes with it. And we're in the middle of that at the moment. But it still takes years to come in so there's time to work out what you like and what you don't.

I will concede that I enjoy thinking about this kind of stuff and that it must be a lot harder if you don't.

Delatron · 16/05/2021 13:11

Are trainers with dresses now dated?

What are we supposed to wear with them? Someone will say clogs I just know it!

Maireas · 16/05/2021 13:18

Clogs! Grin

Haha I've actually just been looking for the perfect pair. Get ready! They are coming! And I am not joking!
