Fashion, Beauty, Hair looks which now look dated

What comes to mind?

Is there any looks you consider abit dated now but weren't 5-10 years ago perhaps?

I do love the tent, peasant dresses, I've always fully embraced the Amish look in summer but I find baggy separates harder.

Re straight hair in the 90s/00s I hated my natural wave & even straightened a night out clubbing would induce a kink but the wavy, tousled look has been in ages so I'll probably be out of fashion again soon.

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 13:39

I'm not doing clogs again 😆

Delatron · 16/05/2021 13:51

I walk loads. How can I walk in clogs?!

Have just bought some flares. I guess I need clogs for those too. Arrggh.

Re: the straight hair, I've heard the opposite. Although I have poker straight hair and honestly can't be bothered to put a curl or wave in it. Straight hair and curly hair will never be truly out of fashion. No one will laugh at you on the street. But this year more of a loose undone wave - not the structured styled beach waves we've seen previously will be more popular.

There's a good recap here www.whowhatwear.co.uk/shag-hairstyle

I re-watched The Devil Wears Prada recently and, while obviously some of the outfits did look very much of-the-time, I thought the main thing that dated it was the make-up. Lots of heavy black eyeliner and red lips. Also the fact the film is packed full of attractive young women and yet very few looked as though they'd been botox-d, filled and pumped full of silicone (I feel like if it were re-made now, Emily Blunt's character would definitely have lip filler, refuse to smile or frown in case of wrinkles and spend her breaks getting botox).

sneering at other people's fashion choices is so over... that 90's mean girl aesthetic has been done to death. Now it's more 'you do you', and 'you go girl'. Plus, with 'sustainability' and 'slow fashion', it's actually quite cool to still wear your 2016 chunky trainers or still drag out the peasant skirt you bought in Bali in 2003...

HotelChoc · 16/05/2021 14:15

I think I'm fascinated by 'who decides?'

Trends come and go, who leads this...and even more fascinated that this can spread worldwide.

I'd like everyone to ignore fashion, far more sustainable. 😂

MyFloorIsLava · 16/05/2021 15:30

I am incredibly unfashionable but have been told skinny jeans are Out and wide leg jeans are In, and likely to be for the foreseeable. As my ancient skinnies are literally falling apart I was more than happy to replace them with lovely wide leg jeans like the ones I wore in the late 90s except then I was a fair bit smaller That's as far as my nod to fashion will go, unless comic book inspired tshirts ever feature on a Vogue cover.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/05/2021 16:12

I don't care if wide legged jeans come back in - I remember well the puddle dragging and soggy legs of the 90s. You'll be prising my skinnies from my cold dead hands!

Juancornetto · 16/05/2021 16:31

I saw someone in the supermarket today with jeans and sky high heels and it did look dated. The heels, not the jeans.

The people whose fortunes depend on women being convinced they will be judged by other women as unstylish and 'dated' if they wear clothes that are not new.
Serpenta · 16/05/2021 18:12

I love the wide legged trousers but am not into those oversized tiered dresses.

Remember when pelmets where everywhere about 8 years ago. Hated them. That whole bodycon thing seems so long ago now.

I agree it's easy to dodge trends you don't like.

Face wise a pared down 'perfect skin' makeup look seems to be coming in. But the trend for lip fillers etc. is bigger than ever. Will be interested to see how those two things clash.

Craftycorvid · 18/05/2021 07:49

This is fascinating! So many trends have either passed me by or I’ve decided they look draughty, uncomfortable or just plain daft. I do like clothes (a lot) and I like dressing up and choosing what to wear, but am pretty much immune to fashion whims. That said, I’d probably avoid certain things if I realise they’re either ubiquitous or seem ageing. I’d dodge: the longer ‘waterfall’ cardi’ and the fur gilet (was a thing in the early 00s) usually worn with skinny jeans and knee boots. I never wear heels as they’re too uncomfortable. I’ve packed away my leather knee boots for when the weather is cold and I have an outfit that suits them. I don’t throw things away unless they no longer fit or do nothing for me. Chances are a trend will bring them round again anyway! I am quite liking smart trainers and dresses though, for me it looks less ‘done’ and fussy than smart shoes/smart dress.

OhDear2200 · 18/05/2021 11:31

Is it bad to say that I miss heals? Not for every day but for a night out I loved putting on heals, felt like i was dressing up. But then I’m a 90’s girl and northern 🤣

Serpenta · 18/05/2021 13:05

Heels are very much the anti-pandemic era footwear so I can see why you might be yearning to slip into them and get dancing!

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 18/05/2021 13:14

I love heels and will always wear them. I don't think they will ever truly be out of fashion. The appropriate times to wear them may have, but there will always be an occasion for heels.

Serpenta · 18/05/2021 13:26

People like to announce the death knell for heels ever so often, but they'll never disappear. People's need for high glamour always returns. Not for everyone of course, but in terms of general shifts in trends.

merryhouse · 18/05/2021 13:51

@oober sneering at other people's fashion choices is so over

yeah... probably not.

I remember reading a magazine (probably New Woman) in about 1993 that confidently stated "no-one cares about fashion any more, you can wear what you like"

and two pages later had an anniversary article which basically said "tee-hee, look at the awful clothes we were all wearing 5 years ago!"

SwimmingOnEggshells · 18/05/2021 14:25

YY to the court shoes Kate Middleton wears. I find her style very dated looking. Particularly her hair.
