For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

@botemp - so it looks as if Klira world is launching. Still a bit Hmm about what it actually does? It's £149.00 for a 3 month supply which is a custom formula, then £49.00 delivered for a refillable prescription.

Not sure the difference between this and Dermatica/Skin + Me, but imagine it's along the lines of genius marketing custom base ingredients?

Not sure if anyone has tried, but quite like the new Simple light hydrating moisturiser. Really light

botemp · 09/07/2022 08:56

I've googled but only came across a business article about the seed funding of it. It does describe it as tele-dermatology in that and the CEO is a former ad executive (so I suspect it'll be aggressively all over socials soon). I'm confused too, at over double the price what the point of difference would be, potentially you get to have a one to one zoom session or maybe you get a whole routine not just moisturiser but I think Skin+Me is already doing the latter? Not sure how eager people would be to switch over for that so they'd mainly be targeting new customers with a higher asking price in a downturn economy Confused

Anyone get anything from the latest Lisa Eldridge launch? I had forgotten all about it, despite watching the video on Thursday but my inbox just reminded me. I'm debating whether to get Wonder Wheel but it's free shipping if I get two lipsticks...

@botemp , so it is here

I just don't get it - it's a high value version of Dermatica/Skin +Me, and the base ingredients seem to be about the same. Confused.

Other than Lumigan/Latisse, what eyelash serums are people using? Nanolash looks quite good.

Mrcpy · 17/07/2022 07:03

Just discovered this thread. I really enjoyed reading through your documents in the first post, @botemp - amazing knowledge! Esp the SPF and retinoid guides. I’ve struggled to find a sunscreen that doesn’t make me sticky and shiny, and recently came to the conclusion that skipping moisturiser may be the solution, though I felt naughty for doing so 😂Thanks for saying it’s ok.

botemp · 17/07/2022 10:13

Welcome @Mrcpy, good to hear the info sheets are still holding up as I always keep berating myself that they could probably do with a revise/update. Totally fine to skip moisturiser, especially with the extreme heat, I just apply some vitamin c serum and then the evy technology mousse SPF and that's a little too rich feeling sometimea. It somewhat assures me that I'm also probably getting better SPF protection by not using it with lots of layers in between (SPF testing is done on bare skin alone).

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I've looked and it's ehm weird. It does look like skin+me/Dermatica with the addition of some skinceuticals, la Roche Posay and the inkey list products. So I guess the appeal is that maybe you get an expensive skinceuticals product but in reality it'll probably be a half size or a cleanser. I don't see the USP but maybe there's a market for it. Also, I really dislike the logo, it's giving me very budget graphic designer early 00s vibes.

I'm using rapidlash at the moment, I'm a bit meh about it, it does lengthen lashes but it doesn't thicken the way bimatoprost (the active ingredient in Latisse, the lash serums tend to use peptides) does. Tbh I prefer the thickening effect over the lengthening so if you're just looking for lengthening, rapidlash is pretty cheap and effective. I think you can get the prescription stuff a lot easier in the UK though, skin+me or Dermatica offered it iirc and there's another called mylash, I think. Fair bit more expensive from memory though.

So, found Tretinoin World. Some of the reviews were dreadful, but apparently someone had a grudge.

May get .1% tret as the Skin + Me can't exclude azeliac acid and niacinimide and find that formulation irritating.

The only thing I'm wondering is where they get their stock Hmm

botemp · 09/08/2022 08:32

I think I the UK has some legal loopholes with places like Isle of Man (I think, wherever All Beauty is based). I remember when I first joined MN everyone was getting their tret from dodgy pharmacy Geoff (the name alone would send me running) whose website only worked on and off and was also based in a place like IoM. I'm guessing it's import from India?

.1% is a very high strength though, especially if it's gel (usually), and probably too high for just anti ageing. I'm still convinced the Dermatica and Skin+Me formulations are altered somewhat to make them less irritating and therefore don't translate in strength 1:1 to the regular stuff.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 09/08/2022 20:33

@botemp - think you're right about Dermatica/Skin + Me formulations.

My mom is visiting from California and brought over some Timeless which I love. She also bought over Ulta MD sunscreen which I have been wanting to try and it was just, 'meh.' Can't remember where I read it, but American sunscreens tend to be more mineral than chemical, but the Ulta MD was really thin, and I didn't get the coverage for instance with something more substantial like Eucerin mattifying which is the sunscreen of choice at the moment with the heat here in the UK.

Quite liking the rich moisturiser sample from Skin + Me. The cleanser was nothing special.

botemp · 10/08/2022 11:13

Must be lovely to have your mom around again, MrObama.

Is it the spf46 one? Yeah, because of the whole weird FDA sunscreen filter procedure the chemical sunscreens aren't great and the mineral ones tend to be more innovative than elsewhere.

Has anyone tried any of the Hello Sunday SPFs? I think Boots sell them in the UK. I saw they have a facial top up product that could be interesting but all the Benzene callbacks in the US have somewhat put me off spray sunscreens somewhat (this seems to be an issue with spray sunscreens primarily).

I have the serum one bookmarked, I'm sure James Welsh reviewed it.. I saw it had a good review somewhere anyway!
I always get them and summer Fridays mixed up for some reason

botemp · 10/08/2022 20:07

Ah interesting about James Welsh, I did wonder, going by the packaging design if it was an insta brand mainly as I've not seen any chatter about it elsewhere. Initially I thought it was Supergoop repackaged for the European market but apparently it's Spanish or made there anyhow. If you try the serum one do let us know.

Yes, those pesky days of the weeks names, I often forget the fashion brand Weekday is not called Weekend 😂

Where's Olli disappeared to, I'm in the market for a lip oil so could use some input. Unfragranced, if anyone has a good one to recommend, I really used to like the Clarins one but hated the scent. Dior lip glow oil is looking good but apparently all of tik tok is obsessed with it which always makes me suspicious.

OP posts:
PeloAddict · 10/08/2022 20:25

I have NC WinkGrin
I can't actually think of any lip oils to be honest, it's not something I've ever tried

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 10/08/2022 20:37

@botemp - it's brilliant to have my mom around again after so so long. she's in Paris for the week visiting neighbours who split their time in Paris and California.

ha ha about Tik Tok. DD1 got a Dior lip oil for her birthday and loves it. But right to be suspicious of Tok Tok - Clinique had to put Black Honey back into production after it went viral. Hmm

Altruist have just launched a Facial 30 SPF which looks great.

PeloAddict · 10/08/2022 23:50

I knew I had heard something about lip oils and it was Robert Welsh on his podcast
He said the only two he likes are sigma and lunar beauty
I googled the sigma one and now need it

BabyPigeon83 · 20/08/2022 22:34

@botemp I bought a few hello Sunday products after I saw the review from James Welsh. I have tbe serum in a dropper bottle (travel size). It's ok but overpriced for the quantity, the effect is pretty luminous. I had to use powder to tone it down a bit. I have the hand cream which I like and the lip balm which does not taste good (like all SPF lip balms).
Lastly I have the spray which I don't like at all, the mist is not fine enough and it has an oily effect, I can't use it on the face over make up. I prefer the Garnier and la Roche Posay ones.
Did you choose something from Lisa's new release? I got wonder wheel and strawberry shock in the end. They are both great.

botemp · 21/08/2022 07:05

Ah interesting thanks for that roundup pigeon, good to know it's generally more pretty packaging than game changing.

No, I didn't end up ordering any of Lisa Eldridge latest launch although I just checked and everything except one I wasn't interested in is in stock so I could still order something, I suppose. But I've not been feeling all that lipstick eager this summer 🥵 and am all about lip oils at the moment. Did contemplate Getting Go Lightly gloss (hers is not too dissimilar to a lip oil) from Lisa Eldridge as I'm familiar with the formula but I basically wanted Wonder Wheel in a lip oil format.

Haven’t been on this board for ages but I’ve been following 🙂

Does anyone have recommendations for an spf that would be suitable for a teenager with acne (starting doxycycline so need to be better with sunscreen)? As well as non comedogenic it needs to be something that isn’t oily after an hour or two.

I’m using Dr Sam (flawless gossamer tint) which works well for me but would prefer something less expensive.

botemp · 21/08/2022 10:10

Hiya Jedstre longtime no see Smile

I'm crap with the oily ones, I vaguely recall Eucerin being a popular choice but maybe not that cheap? Altruist seems to have rebranded or started another brand, not sure, it's called, grüum and it's super cheap in attractive packaging. Might something worth trying among those as they now have a range of products?

Other more expensive option is the Paula's Choice clear moisturiser, spf30 only I think but with a teen a two in one thing might be more reliably used?

And in vein of things that actually get used, I still swear by anything with a pump mechanism as being more likely to be used by the male of the species. The Japanese Nivea UV Super Water Gel is still a favourite, I think that would probably be okay for oily skin too, it's very lightweight (in the same category as the biore) but kind of depends on lifestyle, I think it's very much a commuter sunscreen and less an outdoorsy one.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 21/08/2022 18:01

@Jedstre - DD1 uses Eucerin mattifying. It's not cheap, but can usually find it on offer somewhere for around £13.00 for 50ml. Fairly sure Altruist hasn't rebranded, but their SPF tends to be quite oily and DS and DD2 are happy using anything to stop me nagging

What do you think of Dr Sam's tint? The Tint 02 always seems to be sold out and my understanding is that if you anything darker than Nicole Kidman, you can't use Tint 01.

did you have A level results last week? We get GCSE results on Thursday. [eek]

Am considering Colorscience Glow, any experience?

I recently tried Colorescience Glow, and also the Colorescience Flex for fair skin (went down a youtube rabbithole which convinced me I needed to switch to mineral sunscreen).
I couldn't wear either of them tbh. The flex was good for matching my skin colour, but both of them felt like I was wearing thick cakey makeup, and rubbed off really badly on my clothes, and some of the staining didn't come out even after washing.

They may be better for oily skin, but I just went back to my trust LRP. So I have two almost full bottles of the stuff if you want them.

BabyPigeon83 · 22/08/2022 16:50

@botemp Wonder wheel is pretty shiny /glossy when immediately applied. It goes away when drinking and eating but leaves back a stain. I love Lisa's gloss formula, I mentioned before they seem to condition my lips. I know it's not an oil, but I really like the lip peptide serum from Paula's Choice. It feels pretty oily/glossy on the lips, I use it overnight but could be used any other time I suppose.i keep repurchasing it when she is running 20% off

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I have tbe gossamer tint 1 and the shade is right for.me, I'm pretty pale but not tbe palest by far. Sorry, I guess it doesn't help. But I hate how oily it's on my skin. I end up still using the Paula's choice spf 30 tinted one. I'm not even that oily anymore but I'm disappointed. I wish she had travel sizes or samples to try.

Did anybody see the cult beauty skin care boxes?

www.cultbeauty.co.uk/brands/cult-beauty/gifts/skin-care-edits.list

botemp · 22/08/2022 17:40

Yes, I really like LE's lip glosses too and I think they contain a lot of nourishing oils. I don't think there's much between lip glosses and oils it's just a bit of marketing I suspect but unlike lip glosses they're always sheer and don't have that horrible sickly sweet fragrance. They also tend to be less sticky. They don't do much for lip conditioning the way a dedicated lip balm or similar does, I just really like having really shiny lips with a hint of colour at the moment. I suspect I've been tik tok influenced without knowing it 🤷 I did finally find the Dior one in stock in the colour I wanted and the sales woman was complaining about all the tweens that keep coming in wanting to use the sample.

If there's ever a wonder wheel gloss I'm ordering it ASAP.

MrObama I think Abby Jung (or Yung, some YouTube name like that) did a lot of Colorscience reviews. She's king of annoying in that perky wide eyed way but for the odd video it's fine and she is informative enough.

Thanks for the welcome back @botemp and the recommendations. I’ve heard altruist is quite oily on the skin but after my own trials and errors, (thinking back to when everyone on here loved that pump/serum/primer
type spf-can’t remember the name-and I hated it as it made me really oily), I know it varies and is very individual. I’ll look at the Nivea though as I had success with Japanese spfs.

@ilovemydogandmrobama2
I haven’t tried eucerin but easy to get hold of so I’ll probably try that while waiting for Japanese delivery. No exam results here, hope results day is a happy day in your household.

Dr Sam tint 01 works well for me. I am fair but not ridiculously so. I imagine 02 would be too dark. Probably 1.5 would be ideal!
Interesting that @BabyPigeon83 finds it so oily. I thought it might be for me, given it has shea butter in the ingredients, but I’m no more oily than usual when I use it. I don’t use moisturiser, just layer it straight over vitamin c serum (using medik 8 c tetra).

SophieLion · 31/08/2022 10:16

Hi jedstre, my derm always recommends Avene cleanance. It does leave the face whiter (but I find that with the dr Sam mineral one too (untinted)). I use the Avene one a lot and it doesn't block pores or cause any further spots and is mattifying. Just not sure re pricing in the UK and how cheap.

BabyPigeon83 · 31/08/2022 18:28

@Jedstre Good point, I will try to cut out some steps in the morning routine before using it. Maybe once I powder it will be better.😊
