For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Thanks all for the welcome and advice. I have ordered Paula's Choice liquid BHA in travel size, 30ml £10 happy with that. I'm thinking of getting cerave PM for the niacinamide as I read that helps with pores too.

I'm looking into Frezyderm, thanks @Bo. I currently use cerave am most days and the ordinary sunscream on days I know I'll be outside more. But I really want a spf50 that's nice enough to wear every day - don't mind a bit of white cast or a bit of shine, as long as it's not cause a breakout. I did like the sound of ultra violet just a shame about the fragrance but they maybe have a fragrance free.

botemp · 24/08/2021 11:58

I can't remember, I think the calm bha 1% is a siliconey type cream. The gel can be useful for teens (and some men) as it's easy to apply. Are there more lotions and gels Shock I really do wish they'd just condense it to a few products with clear intended audience.

Hmm, yes, babe, darling and all that nonsense is an automatic unsubscribe from me too. You're a £££ corporation, we're not friends Hmm and I wouldn't take being called any of the above by friends either.

Nigella, the Frezyderm is very different from the ordinary sunscreen, I've never used that one but from what I gather it's a bit like chalk Shock Frezyderm just disappears into nothing, I'm not sure what the price is these days post Brexit (it's Greek). It used to be around £20 I think.

I didn’t notice fragrance in the ultra violette sunscreen, but to be honest it’s not something that really bothers me so maybe I just haven’t noticed. Queen screen is doing an excellent job today, it seemed a bit greasy at first but has settled in to nothing which is what I am looking for in a sunscreen!
The emails are really annoying….apparently vi in the warehouse had to be told my order was for Harry styles to get her to get a move on……. I’m Way too old for that nonsense! I’ll use my £10 voucher when I’ve tried all of the minis and then I’ll probably move on to a different brand.
Frezyderm was on my list to try so maybe that. I’ve ordered a couple of cheaper korean and Japanese ones from style vana too but delivery is soo slow!

Jedstre · 24/08/2021 20:16

Hi Nigella. I use cerave pm at night. It’s a pretty good solid moisturiser with, as you say, the niacinamide and ceramides. I just bought some today actually in Boots with 20% off. I’ve used frezyderm in the past and although I’m in the minority on here, I really didn’t like it. Felt like a silicone primer and made me really oily by lunchtime. The other spf that makes me super oily is skinceuticals. Luckily just a sample size I got with the Vit c but ugh!

Boots are also giving away full sizes of three of their No7 mascaras. Just go to the No7 counter and ask for one. No purchase necessary! I think the offer runs until Friday (or could be tomorrow).

NigellaSeed · 25/08/2021 21:42

Thank you. Yes I think I'll go for that moisturizer.

I don't know if I'm just dipping in an out of phases or not but for the last year or so I've been really regimented with a routine of 5 or more different one ingredient products (the ordinary rabbit hole) and I'll be sticking with some (l-absorbic acid powder for definite) but I'm really wanted to move away from some of that and have good products with multiple high performance ingredients

I don't know though, I have really good skin (minus the blackheads! (Hopefully not for long) ) so don't want to be drastic

The mineral ultra violette has tempted me after we discussed it here....

NotMyCat · 25/08/2021 21:57

Shoot tomorrow. I stopped skin and me a few days ago to help the dryness/texture
Used the deviant resurfacing liquid tonight, it is such a lovely acid

Hopdathelf · 25/08/2021 22:21

My Ultra Violette trial pack arrived. Not impressed so far. They’re all extremely pungent in different ways. Vi should spend less time thinking about Harry Styles and Bridgerton and more time on her formulations. I don’t want to smell my own face four hours after application.

Kjr33 · 26/08/2021 07:08

@NigellaSeed tried the mineral yesterday, such a nice finish on me (not sure how the tint would work on lighter or especially darker skin tones though) but omg the eye sting! Such a shame but that one is for neck and chest use only!

NotMyCat · 26/08/2021 08:22

I forgot how nice Estée Lauder futurist foundation is. Zoomed in, no filter and in daylight. Rubbish if you're oily but great for drier skin

@botemp You are right, I was thinking about the AHAs, they come in different formulas and percentages. I think the original idea was to give options for all skin types, so people can choose between gels, lotions, liquids, light creams, thick creams etc. But the result can be overwhelming and confusing for newcomers. I also wish they would streamline and repackage all ranges. I thought they will do that after updating the booster range, the newer packaging looks pretty cool. I also wish they had hair care ranges and makeup with SPF.

Off topic, I saw this video by James Welsh:

This is the camera I think:
sunscreenr.com/

There is also a mirror that shows UV coverage but it's £££:
uvreveal.com/products/uvreveal

It does look interesting.

You're skin looks flawless. I think Estee Lauder is coming up with a new foundation in the double wear range, but I can't remember the name and for what type of skin it is.
BabyPigeon · 27/08/2021 16:25

Your* :D

Kjr33 · 29/08/2021 15:22

Just popping back to say my stylevana order finally arrived and the two sunscreens I ordered have totally blown away the ultra violette ones! Isntree hyaloronic is great it’s a tad shiny at first but settled and felt lovely all day and I got a sunprise one which is dryer and will need more moisturiser under it but a really nice Matt finish. Not even sure I’m going to use the ultra violette voucher now which seems a shame as it feels like a waste.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 29/08/2021 16:24

Frezyderm has gone up in price since Brexit - I used to get it for about £17-18 on Amazon and now it’s about £26.

botemp · 29/08/2021 20:17

Oof that's quite a price hike. I order it directly from Greece these days, usually €12/13 (plus shipping but when I buy in bulk it usually evens out). That's not very useful if you're living in the UK though, sorry.

Feedback on the Verdio moisture milk, I absolute love it, it has that satin finish which is my preferred sunscreen finish and it's so lightweight. Sadly, I've discovered it's actually discontinued Shock so I'll have to stock up and see if the all chemical ones are any good.

Where do Stylevana ship from Kjr? I had looked into it but I think they don't ship with duties prepaid and everything gets stopped here.

Pigeon I had looked into that before, having it shipped in from the US put me off with the added taxes/import fees. Tbh I think it's a blessing in disguise, it's a bit of the equivalent of a 20x magnifying mirror where you end up over focusing on flaws.

Back to niacinamide, as someone was asking (Nigella I think) I spotted Vichy has a new version of the Mineral 89 with an added 4% niacinamide, looks promising.

OP posts:
Kjr33 · 29/08/2021 21:48

@botemp I’m guess you aren’t uk based then, I didn’t pay any duties etc but no idea how it might differ elsewhere. I think I saw stylevana recommended on Instagram as a place to order from, I wonder if there would be similar recommendations for stockists/shipping for where you are based?

BabyPigeon · 29/08/2021 22:19

@botemp Do you mean that it will show imperfections and sun damage that are not yet visible? That is a scary thought...

botemp · 29/08/2021 22:44

kjr I'm in the EU, I usually order from Amazon Japan as they're usually quite affordable provided I order a number of things. They deliver really fast, usually within a week. Because of regulations you can only order alcohol free sunscreens from them. A lot of the other Asian beauty stores ship from Hong Kong but there's the occasional fake products unfortunately. I've also ordered from Dokodemo in the past, that's very cheap if you capatalise on their offers but with the new EU regulations of paying taxes/vat on everything (there used to be an exemption to a certain amount) they're not that interesting to me anymore. I suspect Stylevana is a Hong Kong based company that went under a different name previously, got caught out with a few fakes, were dodgy with customs, etc. I get a bit annoyed with them as their EU site makes the false impression they're EU based.

Pigeon, yeah, I don't know if I want to see the age spots/pigmentation that's just waiting to pop up and scream, surprise! Shock

Haven’t posted here for ages. Been trying to catch up!
A quick question: I use p50 5 days a week so do I also need to use vit c? If so how would I fit it into the routine?
I am a bit muddled about the different brands. Some seem very expensive.x
Thansky

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 30/08/2021 14:42

@BigButtons - I use Vit C in the morning, and although don't use P50, use Medic8 Press and Glow which is a PHA. I use it in the evening after cleansing and before Tret..

botemp · 30/08/2021 14:53

BigButtons I wouldn't use p50 and tret in one routine. You can use p50 and vitamin C in one routine without issue (usually, I think you have rhino hide skin so it's not an issue but for some vitamin c can be very sensitising) so I'd use those both in the morning. Didn't you always make your own vitamin c?

OP posts:
BigButtons · 30/08/2021 15:03

@botemp you have such an amazing memory- wow!
Yes indeed I did/do make my own vit c. Easy and cheap and effective, but unstable.( needs to be kept in fridge and used within 2 weeks)
The trouble is I am a bit lazy when it comes to my skin care in that it needs to be an efficient, easy routine or else I won't do it.

I do my morning routine in the bedroom and all my morning routine stuff is kept together in a specific basket. I can't do that with the vit c. I have to remember to get it from the fridge downstairs when i go up to get ready and then put it back. That's not really happening.
hence me asking about vit c.( one that I can keep in my basket with all the rest of the stuff.)
yes I have rhino skin.
Smile

botemp · 30/08/2021 16:40

I think in that case it would be easiest to order a bunch of 5 or 10ml dropper bottles and just put a week's worth of serum into those and keep the main supply in the fridge. Pretty much all the ones that are worth buying these days will require refrigeration except the Drunk Elephant one as that has an airless pump but that one is often oxidised when you buy it so that's fallen out of favour with many on here. I don't know when they'll start selling the 'fresh' version (where you mix in the L-AA yourself) of it here. Otherwise they're all in dropper bottles that'll go off before you can use it up, usually.

OP posts:
BigButtons · 30/08/2021 17:01

@botemp I have loads of those dropper bottles. I had even contemplated buying a mini fridge for the bedroom.

In that case- since it would have to be refrigerated anyway- Maybe I will just have to be more organised and wash my face before I go down stairs for my breakfast and put the c on whilst I’m waiting for the kettle to boil 😀

NotMyCat · 30/08/2021 17:59

I think I've sorted the tret flaking
I'm basically buffering so a small amount moisturiser first, leave it to sink in for as long as I can then tret on top
