For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Sophie it’s the Brazilian girl routine I follow and just seen she’s put a new one up for eyes

If you go to her channel she’s got more routines on there for other areas too

SophieLion · 17/08/2021 15:25

That's great. Thank you so much Sallie!

Tsmummy08 · 17/08/2021 16:46

Thanks Sallie! I'm going to try this later :)

SallieSallow · 17/08/2021 18:56

I’m almost certain it was Bo who recommended this YouTuber originally so thanks due to her if it was Grin

botemp · 17/08/2021 19:38

Yes, I learned my advanced techniques from her and I doubt my results would have been as impressive if I had just done the basic suggested Foreo routine. I wasn't aware she did more videos so I shall have to catch up on those.

Major SPF failure - despite putting on LRP 50, came out with slight sunburn Shock. Put on every hour as outside in Pembrokeshire most of the day in addition to hat.

Swapped to Ultrasun 50 which seems to have worked better.

SophieLion · 18/08/2021 09:43

Yes i remember bo sending round the video (which I also use for my bear routine). The eye one you sent Sallie was very interesting - I like how she shows the facial muscles at the same time so you know what you are working.

SophieLion · 18/08/2021 09:44

Oh sorry to hear that MrObama. Bit disappointing for LRP.

Kjr33 · 23/08/2021 12:45

Just incase anyone in the uk is interested ultra violette are doing a bundle of spf minis for £20 so you can try 4 and you also get a £10 voucher to use after you have tried the bundle, queen screen is looking like my favourite so far

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/08/2021 13:37

Is there a difference between the bear one and nu face? Saw the nu face mentioned on another thread last night as a recommendation. Both seem expensive and never spent much on skincare so will it be a fad or is there a noticeable difference to skin?

Hopdathelf · 23/08/2021 16:32

Thank you for the tip about Ultra Violette!

Mummyingetc · 23/08/2021 20:18

So update- I really like the Sam bunting revival mask: it’s verging on the wow after a few weeks ish use. Have been trying out TO Matrixyl peptide serum and between the two I am super even toned by the morning. My primary problem at the moment is having my face squished in a PPE mask all day and it’s been brilliant for skin recovery after that. It maybe going on the cold dead fingers list.

NigellaSeed · 23/08/2021 21:26

I've spent a lot of evenings reading old threads. Finally deeping my toes in to join in.

I'm really happy with my skin, I think I'm giving it what it needs, BUT have always had blackheads on my nose. It looks like the ordinary are never bringing back salcyclic acid - so I'm thinking maybe Paula's choice RESIST - I currently use lactic acid 10% as an exfoliater. I might use the PC just to target my nose but it seems a lot of money and it's also an anti aging product so maybe it would be a waste to only put it on my nose.

Also, looking for a better SPF, I like the ones I use and I use them everyday but they are only 25 and 30. I heard the ultra violet queen screen is good but I think it has rose fragrance :(

Sorry for such a long first comment!!

NotMyCat · 23/08/2021 23:26

I like the UV supreme screen, it's really nice
Have found something that's working for my flaky skin - mother dirt moisturiser which is v oily if you use too much, but then with laniege water sleeping mask over the top. It seems to lock it in and the oily feel instantly disappears!

Photo shoot on Thursday so I have stopped skin and me for the next few days to cut as much flaking as possible and hammering the hydration Grin

Mummyingetc · 24/08/2021 07:01

A BHA is better for blackheads @NigellaSeed as it’ll penetrate the oily pore. PC do some solid opener acids including a BHA but there are more elegant chemical exfoliators out there for example those with niacinamide/ azaleic in addition which would draw me now…

Mummyingetc · 24/08/2021 07:02

And yes to a higher SPF!! Welcome to the skincare worm hole…

botemp · 24/08/2021 07:45

kjr Where is this ultraviolette offer, on their own site or somewhere like spacenk/cult beauty?

I'm trying out a new Japanese sunscreen by Verdio, mineral mix, I haven't tried it yet though. But it's cheap under ¥1000 (€8/£7) and I can order through Amazon JP (think they're on yesstyle too).

IceCream, the Foreo bear (not the mini) is higher in strength and takes less time. Both the Nuface models are the same strength (both weaker than the bear). I notice a difference with the Foreo bear, I'm really happy with it but it does seem to vary per individual and age range, it's not going to defy gravity.

Finally some encouraging vitamin c news, Drunk Elephant is redesigning their packaging which means you mix it when you get it to ensure freshness, since the product not being fresh for a lot of you that is a major improvement. But a big Hmm for their customer service response at the time.

I've also come across a French pharmacy one from Auriga, flavo-c forte (there's also a flavo-c standard that's 8% which is technically too low, forte is 15%). Parent company is ISDIN so technically Spanish pharmacy but it seems to be easy to get hold of in French pharmacies and online. Price point is a bit more than Timeless was but not as expensive as DE or Skinceuticals or even Vichy. Looks to be a near identical formulation to Skinceuticals but it's replaced vitamin E with something else and there's Gingko Biloba in it which is soothing.

I really need to give the Geek & Gorgeous one a try as they're expanding resellers so the stupidly high shipping unless you buy everything shouldn't be a deterrent for me anymore soon.

Welcome Nigella, PC really do do a good BHA, you can just get the travel size, it lasts for a really long time, especially if you only use it on your nose. It's not really an anti ageing ingredient that you must put everywhere, I know they sell it as part of their anti ageing lineup but it'll just mean there's some sort of hydrator or antioxidant in it, BHA really is meant for targeted use. They sell several and I can't remember which but one is sold as anti ageing but is identical to one not sold as anti ageing (I think the original 2% perfecting liquid), I don't know if they still do it but they also sold one for men that was also identical, prices were the same though so not that damning. The others do a have a differentiation point for oily and sensitive skin. Anyhow, long story short, it's not an anti ageing ingredient so no need to go all over the face when you only have one problem area.

Wrt SPF, Frezyderm velvet spf50 is still my preferred 'doesn't feel like a sunscreen at all' sunscreen.

Cat, with how long you've been using Skin + Me I'd expect your skin to not be so sensitive to it anymore, permanent inflammation really undoes a lot of the good tret is supposed to do. Is it not worth considering going down a touch in strength?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/08/2021 08:01

Thank you botemp. Very new to this and don’t want to waste a lot of money on products and creams that I won’t use etc.

NotMyCat · 24/08/2021 08:06

Botemp - it's their own site Smile they've got a new U.K. website, I got an email about it the other day

Skin and me is a weird one. I seem to peel/flake (not heavily) whatever strength I'm on but only on my chin. If you looked at my skin you would say "where?!" but it's when I put foundation on it becomes obvious. It's trying to balance the hydration being enough with me being acne prone that's tricky

Not sure if you can see what I mean, it's like a texture change

botemp · 24/08/2021 08:14

I can see it quite well on the picture. Have you tried buffering in that area? Or applying 30mins later, perioral dermatitis is quite common with Tret but you kind of want to avoid it starting up. Toothpaste could be a factor but I think you already use one without SLS iirc.

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 24/08/2021 08:21

@NigellaSeed There are a few Paula's BHA liquids and it can get confusing but they explain in the products description.
The original one is Skin Perfecting 2% BHA liquid exfoliant. Botemp is right, a bottle lasts a very long time, and the travel size does as well, especially when used on smaller areas. It has a bit of tackiness so I use it at night.
Then there is the resist one Resist anti aging 2% BHA exfoliant, this is not tacky at all but I believe it's a bit less potent than the original and it has more anti aging ingredients. It's good for use during the day as a toner.
The one in the men range PC4Men 2% BHA Exfoliant, is just the resist anti aging one,
repackaged.
Then there are 2 in the clear anti acne range: regular and extra strength. I believe the extra strength one has the same formula as the original liquid exfoliant. The regular strength is a bit milder (higher Ph) so it's less tacky on the skin.
I recommend getting a travel size of the original BHA liquid to try on the nose at night.

NotMyCat · 24/08/2021 08:22

I'll try buffering and see if it helps, not really using any other actives except an acid maybe once a week
Yes, SLS free toothpaste!

Hopdathelf · 24/08/2021 08:24

If I like the Ultra Violette products I’m not sure I’ll order from them again. They are now sending me cutesy emails about someone called Vi eating prosecco and chips. I can’t stand that type of marketing and I’m certain DH has never had an email to tell him Tommo’s put his parcel in the post then gone back to bevying with the lads and gorging on pork scratchings.

botemp · 24/08/2021 08:42

Christ on a bike, aren't we edgy with our prosecco and chips. That would hugely annoy me too, and put me off the brand altogether. They're clearly targeting women with some disposable income but the ones young enough to earn a bit, but not a lot, but who are yet to be burdened by the true cost of things like mortgages, children, etc. They can spend their money however they like but it does feel predatory from a marketing standpoint. The price point of their products would suggest 30+ women with a good income not the flights of fancy will buy whatever is on Instagram/Tik Tok generation who then need to eat pot noodles for the rest of the month when they realise they've already spent most of their money.

Thanks for that Pigeon, I only ever remember the vague contours of the differences between all the Paula's Choice bhas so it's good to have the accurate version.

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 24/08/2021 09:03

And that's only the liquid ones @botemp , don't ask me about the lotions and gels, I never tried those and I have no idea about them.
My annoyance with marketing is being called darling, babe, bae, lovely etc. Quick unsubscribe from me when I get anything of the sort.
Ultra Violette seems nice, I'm using now the lean screen mineral spf 50 and it's ok but I can't wait to use it up and go back to my favourite spf 30 ones.

Off topic, I am trying now the azelaic acid from dermatica (I am not subscribed but they have a small ready made range). I like the texture and I think it's going to replace the Paula's Choice one because it's cheaper.
