For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@botemp You're right, from what I see on YouTube the beauty space is pretty saturated. Some brands are hyped based on teen endorsements (glow recipe is popping into mind) but makeup is taking a hit. Most ppl have piles of makeup they cannot finish and are not as excited about new releases as before. The expensive palletes were never meant for teens, that market is held by colourpop in the USA at least.
@NotMyCat. Interesting, I would have imagined that only the larger boots would have the newer brands. I have not stepped into a boots for a while now but I check the website and I see brands that were not there before and also frequent beauty sales. Fenty must tb killing it because Rihanna's status changed from millionaire to billionaire largely due to fenty.

botemp · 09/08/2021 12:07

Hmm, I take those personal wealth estimate fluff pieces with a huge grain of salt as it usually is initiated by the person involved to overstate the value of a company's worth when they are prepared to sell it on. The same happened with Kylie Jenner, Coty reportedly hugely overpaid and the brand is pretty much dead these days. Looking critically, Fenty hasn't really launched anything of interest and the wider shade range isn't as much of a USP anymore. They haven't really produced one iconic product that people will buy again and again so I suspect things are not as well as they seem. They'll have a huge influx of initial sales but I doubt they've been able to maintain that, it would explain this accelerated expansion in Boots.

Skincare is definitely more on the up and up now in terms of influencers generating sales but I don't think it'll ever be as big as makeup got, it really went a bit insane at one point, Becca's demise is testament to that. All those makeup room tours are going to look really odd really soon.

Oh I remember the Kylie Jenner scandal. Now they rebranded because they had to reformulate the products. I think that it lost its hype entirely. Kylie managed to cash in.
Fenty had a shocking release ( not the latest one, a few months back) a pocket lip balm in a squary packaging, the type that needs to be applied with fingers. Everyone thought it was an April fools joke. Grin I think the brand is loved for being inclusive. I think they just released a perfume as well.

SophieLion · 09/08/2021 17:20

I didn't really analyse the vitamins Blush because I was so cross after my bad haircut that I was going to try anything that make me my hair grow quicker..... but the analysis is very useful bo so thank you Thanks (and luckily I don't think they have made my spots any worse... sweat in this hot weather on the other hand....)

I quite like Fenty. Have a lip gloss and a cream blush. And a lip balm (which is a stick one - not the pot one). Admittedly I bought them after trying my DD's fenty products.

botemp · 09/08/2021 18:09

Yes, I'm sure there's nice products but I think it's really hard for a brand like that to have these great leaps forwards and inclusivity isn't always going to be the point of differentiation that'll incentivise sales in the long term.

It's interesting that the byline of Rihanna's impressive wealth focused on the cosmetics company but there's been little mention of the high end luxury fashion brand that's been pulled by LVMH. LVMH also owns Kendo which owns the other stock of Fenty cosmetics, I assume they're studying very closely what the added value of a celebrity name really is, especially after the Kylie Jenner business and every celebrity and their grandma wanting their own beauty line in an extremely oversaturated market.

Weirdly (and you know how much I love makeup!) I don't own or have any real wish to own any fenty Confused
I love the SPF but none of the makeup has appealed

Jedstre · 09/08/2021 20:07

Bo and sophie I’ve attached photo of Dr Sam gossamer tint spf in 01, as promised. It’s nothing like the heliocare coloured spf that sallie linked to. I have that one too and I agree it’s heavy and can look cakey. It does come in a non tinted version but I haven’t tried it.

Wow, that looks really light!

Having tried several tinted SPFs (Heliocare, Neostrata) think it's better for me to do SPF and then foundation for work.

BabyPigeon · 10/08/2021 11:58

@Jedstre This looks very similar to the Australian gold spf 50:

SophieLion · 10/08/2021 12:21

Thank you jedstre. That's helpful.

SophieLion · 10/08/2021 12:32

Ninny (or anyone else who owns a Global babes sun hat): how is your one doing now? Unfortunately a few of the internal wire hooks have come undone in mine and poking out in a couple of places. Still wearable but not as pliable. No idea if I can fix this.....

(Not sure if this happened due to wear or because someone who washed it was rather rough with the poor hat).

botemp · 10/08/2021 13:14

Thanks Jedstre bit more coverage than I thought. It's also quite pale and cool, I think I'd probably need the other colour. Does the Australian sun tinted lotion also come in more colours, Pigeon? I think that would actually be easier to get hold of here. I've also had the mychelle tinted mineral SPF on my to buy list for tonks. So many choices...

BabyPigeon · 10/08/2021 21:05

@botemp I only ever used "original" but I see there are 3 shades available, for medium and darker skin:

NotMyCat · 10/08/2021 22:23

Not skincare but I got the tarte creaseless concealer recently and really like it. It seems quite thick but blended nicely and didn't cling to any dry patches
Pic with it under my eyes, I don't have any other base on. Ignore the eye makeup, covid has ruined my enthusiasm for any makeup other than "basic" SadAngryGrin

Your skin is looking great notmycat. I love your colouring. Also can't be bothered much with make-up now. Most days wear nothing. At least bedtime cleansing routine is simpler!

I haven't used that tarte concealer but I like the shape tape ultra creamy concealer a lot.

NinnyNewName · 11/08/2021 11:46

Hi Sophie,

My hat is doing okay but I've not used it much this last year. I wonder if they will repair it or give you a new one/discounted one?

I've never washed mine! But have wondered about doing so.

I have the shape tape too! The creaseless is a much stiffer consistency if that makes sense but magically not drying
NinnyNewName · 11/08/2021 16:35

I just had a telephone call from Skin + Me Shock. I must have cancelled almost 2 years ago. I wonder if they aren't doing so well.

botemp · 11/08/2021 17:01

Ugh I hate when companies cold call you like that. I always ask them to remove my info from their system immediately.

Thanks pigeon, looks like I'd probably be better off with medium as that doesn't look so overly cool. I've noticed Australian Gold is half the price if I chuck it on Amazon US, is it secretly American and not Australian at all 😱

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 11/08/2021 18:20

@botemp I think it might be a USA brand, from Indianapolis. :O
At least this is what the article I found says (it's pretty old now but still):
www.ft.com/content/feca8df6-767c-11e0-b05b-00144feabdc0

I thought the brand was Australian.

botemp · 11/08/2021 18:38

Indianapolis Shock how unglamorous...

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 11/08/2021 19:20

Weird about Skin + Me....

They seem to keep me on 0.05% (Tret) so emailed and there are no plans to increase it.

@botemp- What is a good maintenance percentage?

botemp · 11/08/2021 19:29

For anti ageing I wouldn't want to go over 0.05, the higher percentage is really reserved for treating acne. It's consistent use rather than strength that gets the best results for anti ageing. Other opinions are available but the above tends to be the general consensus among derms.

BabyPigeon · 11/08/2021 20:22

@botemp At least they are pretty generous with the tube size. Grin
