@Templetreeee - I don't think I used to pay much attention - what threw me though was the instruction to use different sized needles for the same thickness of wool - double knitting. I also used to use the wool recommended on the pattern which I am not with this (some horrible 1950s nylon!).

Templetreeee · 07/05/2021 11:16
@Templetreebalm I know! I've been knitting for about 55 years ( eek) and I've recently started to be more rigorous with tension after a few disasters with size and running out of yarn. Tbh I just test a new yarn I've not used before and use the tension given on ball band rather than on garment over the pattern unless it's really complex.
I used to be good and check but I can look at a garment, know what yarn, needles and tension have been used and make adjustments.
I frequently alter patterns if I dont like how they have constructed something.
Im an avidobsessed knitter though and I dont recommend that anyone else does this Grin

Eeek nylon !
Cant stand the squeak!

faustina · 07/05/2021 17:20

@Templetreeee - exactly! Why go to all that bother and end up with something in nylon!!

This is the pattern - it's quite like the Toast one, but also a Margaret Howell one I've admired - the V neck version:

tank

Aha!
I can see why they said a 4.5mm as they say to use DK or Light Worsted .
Thats a DK or Light Aran in the UK.
Sometimes they can be between DK/ Aran
Have a fiddle with your yarn on both a 4mm and 4.5 and see what you get and prefer.

Templetreeee · 07/05/2021 18:21

Just disappeared down a vintage pattern rabbit hole.Grin
I have absolutely loads inherited from aunties Smile
I think you have inspired me to knit one

faustina · 07/05/2021 18:41

I went down the same rabbit hole on Etsy! It's fascinating isn't it?

Thanks for letting me know about the light worsted - I'd never heard the term before. what are you going to knit?

Templetreeee · 07/05/2021 18:52

Its an american term really. So they have worsted instead of aran. You will always get some yarns lighter or heavier than others. Ravelry is great if you join then you can look up yarns and see what needles/ notes/ comments others have made. I think I will knit a tank. I always swore that if its cold enough for a knitted item it ought to have sleeves but I quite fancy one !
faustina · 07/05/2021 19:06

Yes, I quite fancied a tank too - haven't had one for ages, not since I used to pinch my father's to wear in fact.

I have just noticed that Toast has menswear back! Only a small collection they say, until the A/W

Gonegrey31 · 07/05/2021 19:33

I’m so disappointed. Received an email informing me that my order for a Tala dress has been refunded. I had been assured that this dress had been “allocated to me”.

An apology would have been nice...

Countmeout · 07/05/2021 19:44

Gracious @Gonegrey31 how disappointing. Mine is due tomorrow according to Royal Mail. But I always expect it a day later in these times. I thought they seemed to have most sizes back in stock.

I bought a tank type thing from Hush. I most definitely don’t knit - not since an unfortunate experience with a pink scarf in Primary 5 . Like @Templetreeee I never saw the point I something without sleeves but it’s proved to be just another nice layer in these cold days. And was cheaper than the Toast one. Only problem my daughter has pointed out my resemblance to Timmy ( the little lamb with a lot to learn)

NoCureForLove · 07/05/2021 19:50

Oh GoneGrey that is a bummer.
I'm sure @Toast1997 will be back to invite you to contact them to discuss Hmm

Sooverthemill · 07/05/2021 20:50

@faustina I have that pattern! Bought yarn for it in February but haven't made it yet

faustina · 07/05/2021 21:07

@Countmeout - that's a really nice one!
@Sooverthemill - what a co-incidence! We could have a knit off Grin - I'm using a shetland tweedy black wool - and I just did the tension thing with 4mm needles and it's spot on so full steam ahead!

Gonegrey, I'm so sorry - yes, Toast weren't much use were they - perhaps retreated in shame

I bought the plain/ fairisle round neck one Smile

Sooverthemill · 08/05/2021 09:23

@faustina probably not! I'm half way through a jumper and have just started making a shawl to wear to DD1's wedding in July. I haven't made a shawl since about 1974. So hope to knit a few centimetres a day until then!

Templetreeee · 08/05/2021 12:20

The Bone Gansey has arrived from JL.
Lovely, very happy with this and will wear to death.
I got a Medium and its a relaxed fit

Laska2Meryls · 08/05/2021 12:43

doorornottodoor

Toast got me back into knitting in lockdown. I bought the fairisle green sweater last year, then searched the wool and knitted a fairisle vest. Since then I’ve made a few things, including a stunning Marie Wallin jacket that I’m so proud of.

Thanks, Toast!

AmethystMoonShine · 09/05/2021 09:05

Wow! @Bimblesalong I’m in awe of your knitting skills. That is beautiful Star

I braved an order last night, I got some birthday money and ordered the Emma Aitchison (I think that was her name) silver necklace with the three beads. I was looking for an every day necklace that was a bit different but not too obvious. Got a confirmation of order email instantly.....

applecatchers36 · 09/05/2021 09:08

Bimble that's stunning & seriously impressive that you knitted it, you should be proud, it's gorgeous!

AmethystMoonShine · 09/05/2021 09:08

Yes it was Emma Aitchison and it’s called Ripple Chain. She’s got some lovely pieces on her website... one to remember for sale time!

faustina · 09/05/2021 10:02

@Bimblesalong - that is beautiful, thank you so much for the name too - I'd never heard of her - have subscribed now and will aspire to kitting something from her next
@AmethystMoonShine - happy birthday! What a lovely thing to order yourself. I've admired that many times - also the rings

Countmeout · 09/05/2021 10:08

That is fantastic @Bimblesalong. Such a talent to have.

Happy birthday @AmethystMoonShine that’s a beautiful necklace.

@Templetreeee can you show us which one you bought please.

As predicted the Tala dress did not arrive yesterday. Hopefully tomorrow. There seems to be a black hole in Royal Mail Swansea somewhere that swallows Toast orders .

Bimblesalong · 09/05/2021 10:55

Well Thankyou very much, lovely toastistas. I am delighted with it. She has some lovely kits on her website - I started with the socks, which are gorgeous.
Happy birthday Amyethyst. Treats are the order of the day - lovely idea.
