Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

A lot of companies use waist sizes for jeans @DrCoconut so 26 is around a U.K. 6 I think.

RubyFowler · 19/04/2021 08:20

I also think a lot of women don't actually suit skinny jeans, its just what you expect to see, its what everyone is/was wearing. Its what all the tops and shoes look good with.
I remember being very reluctant to get a pair after being very happy with bootcuts for years. Then you see people wearing them in a way that looks good and you give it a try, then swear blind 20 years later that you wear them because they suit you and will never change!
A friend told me at that time to go for a slim leg if I wasn't ready for a skinny, which I did, and which is also how i transitioned the other way.

I only wear my shiny leather look skinnies and with an overshirt and trainers or doc martens. I love mom jeans much more comfortable and make my bum big and waist small which I like haha

I’m one of those women that skinnies just don’t suit. I have short slim legs, skinnies make them look shorter, too thin and shapeless. Bootcut give me a bit of length and shape.

Not sure, but I want to say 26 inches is an 8? I'm sure 28 was a 10, when I was a 10 (ha!)
ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 19/04/2021 09:03

@RubyFowler I think you’re spot on

Everybody at one stage decides they “give up on fashion” and just wear “ what they like”, it happens. Wonder when that’ll be me Grin

I am embracing the boyfriend/loose jeans as fed up with restrictions of skinny jeans. They look good, but I want change

At 50 It may well be my last change before I become a “they’ll prise my jeans out of my cold dead hands”-person GrinWink

Coffeepot72 · 19/04/2021 09:16

@MissyB1 skinnies don't do me any favours either (unless I wear a particularly long top) so I won't be shedding any tears if they finally disappear.

Floisme · 19/04/2021 09:53

I'm seasonal with my jeans at the moment. When it's warmer I like them barrel / curved or wideleg, top of the ankle length (just a flash of skin on view) and a high-ish waist. I wear with a shirt or a fitted top. When it gets cold I switch to a straight leg, usually wear with an oversized, chunky cardigan or jumper and the waist can be anywhere as no-one sees it.

I do think it's unusual to have this amount of choice in the shops - it's great but I can't recall it happening before with jeans, or at least not going on for this long. Am I misremembering? In idle moments I sometimes wonder if there's some kind of bigger, slower sea change going on?

I'm a 6. I buy 24 or 25.

DrCoconut · 19/04/2021 11:55

That makes a lot more sense. Can you tell that "Maison de George" is the closest to high fashion I get? 😂

northdownsouth7 · 19/04/2021 14:33

Following with interest! I love my skinnies but also loved my bootcut jeans in the 90s, so flattering. I’m tall and a pear shape - tried boyfriend jeans in the past and, like another poster, I looked like a clown. Am thinking M&S Lily or Mom jeans might be better for a pear shape. Any experience from fellow pear shapes??

Bertiebiscuit · 19/04/2021 19:10

Are you sure skinny jeans are flattering? Have you ever looked at your back view? I think they are unflattering on everyone - thin people look like Max Wall, anyone with a bottom just looks completely terrifying from the back

ILoveShula · 19/04/2021 19:52

They look fine on me. As do bootleg and straight.

You won't get me into cropped ones or wide legs or mom jeans.

Needsomethingtoread · 19/04/2021 20:02

I’m loving it as skinny jeans never really suited me. The big top, skinny leg combo doesn’t work on my frame. I suit girlfriend jeans and just got a lovely pair from stitch fix. I got a smaller size though so they fit my waist perfectly. I do find I have to go smaller on mom/girlfriend/boyfriend to get the fit I like.

northdownsouth7 · 19/04/2021 20:03

@Bertiebiscuit Not sure if your comment was a reply to me? I was referring to the latter - bootcut as flattering.

coogee · 19/04/2021 20:32

I had never heard of Max Wall until I wore leggings with walking boots.

Skinnies with DMs would probably look the same.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 19/04/2021 20:49

I'm 40 and for the first time in my life I can actually fit into skinny jeans and feel confident in them so no way on earth am I giving them up. I've never been a slave to trends so don't care what anyone else says. If the shops sell them, that's all that matters to me.

JFM27 · 20/04/2021 00:11

Im petite 4 11 and a 6 to 8,im ok with a loose straight leg silky sort of trouser but flares do not suit my tiny frame,i hated 70s flares you need to be tall.i will stick to my sknnies and straight legs thank you.

alphajuliet123 · 20/04/2021 01:00

Well, I was in the 'cold dead hands' gang until someone mentioned Gap. Just had a look and they still do their bootcuts which were my favourite ever jeans maybe 15-20 years ago. Still got my best pairs stored away somewhere I reckon. Am I allowed to start wearing them again? Hmm

eaglejulesk · 20/04/2021 05:31

I don't have to give up mine as I've never owned a pair of skinny jeans! I somehow managed to find bootcut over the years, and now I can't wait to get a pair of flares.

stealthbanana · 20/04/2021 06:07

For me the problem is shoes - I dislike trainers with baggy jeans - I am an Apple w extremely skinny legs and the combo of lots of fabric and flats just swamps me. So I think you need a high heel with flares or baggy jeans, and that’s just not where the world is right now is it?

I think I’ll get a pair of flares to be worn out with heels, and give up on jeans again - I rarely wore them prior to skinnies coming into fashion as they just don’t suit my body type.

daretodenim · 20/04/2021 06:09

I find all the mum style jeans just make me look like my belly has ballooned..which it needs no help with! High waisted skinnies work because everything else gives me a muffin top, BUT high waisted works under longer tops to give a smoother silhouette. With mum jeans etc, the crop tops, or even French tuck, and a belly end up with just a mess!

Anybody had success finding non-skinnies for short-torsoed, size16, Apple-shape (with big boobs, big belly and absolutely no hint of a waist)?!

LipstickLou · 20/04/2021 07:10

I have very slim legs and a round body 5'10''. The best for me were Gerorge. I tried Marks boyfriend slim as they looked great on a curvy friend. I looked like an apple with legs. We call my new jeans the FOBB. Fat old bit*h baggy! Makes me laugh.

UnaOfStormhold · 20/04/2021 07:15

This thread has finally revealed to me why I don't suit skinny jeans - I'm hourglass shaped with thin ankles and had always felt skinny jeans gave me parsnip legs (I do have a pear for wearing with knee boots). I now realise that they might have looked better if I had worn loose or baggy tops. Except that they make me look huge - it definitely suits me better to wear something fitted or tucked in at the waist. So I will happily stick to my straight jeans and enjoy being vaguely in fashion for once...

UnaOfStormhold · 20/04/2021 07:15

Pair, not pear of course, dratted autocarrot...
