Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

I do have a pear for wearing with knee boots.

I know that it was a typo but thanks for the laugh! I was visualising a giant hollowed out pear with holes for arms, legs and face, combined with boots. Quite a look.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/04/2021 08:29

Skinny jeans and knee boots are so wrong unless you are really slim.

Gestapo officer springs to mind.

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 08:36

I was about time argue with you @ArseInTheCoOpWindow and then I googled plus size knee boots and skinny jeans outfits... um... I can't say Gestapo would have been my first thought, but now you've said it 😬.

I actually think people with slimmer legs can get away with it too, even if they aren't slim on their top half. Especially if they're on the tall side.

I have a pair of knee boots in storage which I'm trying to decide about thinking of having them as my winter boots next winter instead of my combat style black lace ups. They are great for wet, cold weather, but perhaps this chubby hourglass should leave them for with tights and skirts instead of over jeans! I don't have any skinnies anyway. Don't want to remind anyone of the Gestapo thanks Blush

They wore jodhpurs. A different look altogether.

coogee · 20/04/2021 08:42

Although I suppose it depends on how big your thighs are.

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 08:48

Oh yes. Didn't they wear big puffy plus four type things? So more like mom jeans squeezed into knee boots?

My thighs aren't that fat tbf. It's my hips which are MASSIVE.

I can't believe we are discussing this, but, if it's a genuine thought people have when they see me in my knee boots, obviously, I'd seek to avoid that!

Coffeepot72 · 20/04/2021 08:52

I'm seriously interested in boot cut jeans for the coming months - these are flattering with heels and would also be fine with Converse etc

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 08:57

Like those @Coffeepot72.

As pps have said though, I just remember bootcut jeans trailing through puddles when I wore them in the 90s, and I'm fairly tall... but I do like the look of those.

coogee · 20/04/2021 09:02

I'd like them better if the waistband was 4 inches lower.

Coffeepot72 · 20/04/2021 09:05

How about these @coogee

Coffeepot72 · 20/04/2021 09:06

@PollyThePony I'm suspecting this year's boot cut jeans are slightly shorter than the ones I wore in 2002 ..... so no issues with puddles!

They were breeches not jodhpurs. I have some breeks somewhere.

I bought some gorgeous mom jeans yesterday but when I got home I realised I had bought a size or two too small and they won't do up.

Seriously?! They thought THIS was a good picture to advertise the jeans? Grin Grin

Coffeepot72 · 20/04/2021 09:17

@BRB2021 terrifying if that's the best picture of the product they could find .....

ILoveShula · 20/04/2021 09:22

@BRB2021, they look ok because they are on a slip of a girl.

The elasticated waist, the poor fit, the silly pose, and no they are not for me, but I doubt that I am P&B's target audience.

coogee · 20/04/2021 09:24

How about these @coogee**

Thanks. I might give those a try.

coogee · 20/04/2021 09:32

They were breeches not jodhpurs.

According to Mr Google they were most definitely jodhpurs, or what jodhpurs looked like then. Tight from ankle to knee and loose around the thigh, not tight all over.

The whole “mom jeans” thing came about because young people were wearing trendy skinny jeans and the moms were still wearing their old trusty loose jeans which looked dated and marked them out as one of the older generation. If you refuse to give up your skinny jeans now - you are the moms! Personally I think sticking to fashions from when you were younger is what makes you look old and dated, everyone looks fresher in trendy clothes.

ILoveShula · 20/04/2021 09:46

@coogee, the difference between jodhs and britches is the length, so you could be right. In the 1940s both would have been loose around the rear and thighs.

coogee · 20/04/2021 09:53

Perhaps the 1930s stylecould make a comeback.

They looked ok on Amelia Earhart.

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 10:02

God Amelia Earhart looks so COOL! Not sure I could pull those off.

Bythemillpond · 20/04/2021 10:03

I think people should have their own style. I have worn the same things for decades.
Fashion comes and goes but it seems to pass me buy. I just don’t get why people would stop wearing what they like because some businesses say that is no longer in fashion
I have a couple of friends who dress in a certain way. It doesn’t matter whether something is in or out of fashion as their look never really dates.
I think there should be more people like them and then maybe we can get passed the throw away fashion

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 10:14

I think if you buy fashionable clothes, just because they're fashionable, they will always date and the cycle continues. I have a foot in each camp if I think about it.

I try to keep a small wardrobe of classics, which are bland enough not to be in or out of fashion. I can then change how I wear them or maybe add small items to follow trends, which can then go back into storage. For example, I wear straight leg jeans, which don't look out of place among skinny or bootcut. I have longline tops, but they can be tucked in to look less dated, but when everyone else is in skinnies and longline tops, my straight cut and longline tops look similar. Or shirts can be tied at the front to look more cropped. I like this look over skirts. A line skirts suit me, and I don't think they are trendy enough to date really. I don't buy prints any more and I only buy in a few colours, (navy, white, teal, blue), so everything goes together. Shoes come and go with fashion ime, so I keep them in storage until they're worn to death.

So, I do think it's possible to stay not too dated while also not buying new things all the time.

KirstenBlest · 20/04/2021 10:37

I used to have a pair like that and I would wear them with knee legth boots. A bit fancy dress perhaps, but I quite like the Plumo painter trousers look.

Iamthewombat · 20/04/2021 11:00

I’ve got my new M&S boyfriend jeans on today, with a white vest top. Love them. They aren’t baggy, just a bit looser,, and they suit a fitted top.
