I'm so heavy

withmycoffee · 13/04/2021 19:57

I am 5'3" and a small UK 12. So I'm a little chunky for my height but not anything excessive. I wear mediums In most brands. Being shorter ideally I would be a uk 8 and wear xs but I'm in my 50s and look ok. I work out and have significant muscle but.... I am 80kg. EIGHTY. How am I so heavy?

Doesn't matter what the numbers say.
If you're a small 12, and fit and healthy, that's all good in your 50's.

withmycoffee · 13/04/2021 20:00

I'm not overly worried about the weight but I am bemused. HOW am I 80kg? Where is it?

Are you sure your scales are working? For your height and build that does sound a lot. I'm 6' and a size 12 and I weigh 71kg.

PerditaMacleod · 13/04/2021 20:03

How on earth do you weigh 80kg??? I'm 5'2 and 10/12 and currently 59kg. I went up to 69kg last summer and was more like a 14 so I don't know where you're hiding another 11kg Shock Sounds like you don't need to worry though if you work out and you're healthy.

SnowAllSpring · 13/04/2021 20:05

Why are people telling you it's fine? Your BMI is 32. Not just overweight but obese. That's not ok for your health.

GrumpyHoonMain · 13/04/2021 20:06

If you’re a proper size 12, and by that I mean through measurements rather than dress size from a brand, then at your height you would need to be a body builder to be 80KG. Are you sure the scales are working?

FindingMeno · 13/04/2021 20:08

I thought bmi is recognised as a poor indicator nowadays if you have significant muscle mass @SnowAllSpring

SnowAllSpring · 13/04/2021 20:10

@FindingMeno bmi gives a huge range of healthy weights for each height. OP's height and weight put her not just into overweight but into obese.

FindingMeno · 13/04/2021 20:15

@SnowAllSpring but the op has said she wears 12s/ mediums so how can that be obese? I know we have the whole vanity sizing thing, but it's a stretch of the imagination to think someone obese can fit in a 12.

notagainmummy · 13/04/2021 20:15

your scales are wrong.

nadire · 13/04/2021 20:22

Maybe you just have weight distributed around your body therefor not looking too heavy ? I'm 5 foot something and currently 89 to 90kg defo problem

MabelPines · 13/04/2021 20:28

I think your scales may be off OP !

I was weighed about 6 weeks ago at GP surgery - I am 5”6 and weigh 76kg and I am a size 20.

tropicalwaterdiver · 13/04/2021 20:29

Change the scale. I bet your correct weight is 60-65kg if you are small size 12.

iamthesandstorm · 13/04/2021 20:33

That can't be right.you weigh I'm 5 2..weigh 63 kg..I am more of a 14

withmycoffee · 13/04/2021 20:37

Hospital scales. I'd like to think they are accurate. I don't even own scales that's why I didn't know I was so heavy until now. I do lift weights so I have well developed and dense muscle mass but 80kg????? Definitely an average size Medium. Small in some knitwear tops. Some 12s are snug on the bottom due to having a bit of a thick menopausal waist but generally a medium/uk12

Bra size 32E, knickers medium, All Saints (which are known for cutting small) I fit a medium below and a small or medium up top. Hush I fit small tops and medium bottoms. H&M small to medium.

I think you are totally fine maybe you have muscle which weighs more than fat hence the 80kg
withmycoffee · 13/04/2021 20:44

Weird though yes?

You must be very muscular then. I am 5'7", weigh 62 kilos and wear a size 12.

waterlego · 13/04/2021 20:45

Does sound like it’s probably your muscle mass! Do you also have a large frame? You can find out by measuring your wrists (see pic). IMO, frame size should be taken into account when measuring BMI.

My BMI puts me just on the cusp of the overweight category, but my body fat is around 22% which is reasonably low for a woman of my age. I am short and ‘dense’ with a large frame. Big wrists, big feet, wide rib cage etc.

I don’t know why so much emphasis is placed on BMI when really it is excess fat which causes the most health issues. Someone can have low BMI but a high proportion of fat, and vice versa.

waterlego · 13/04/2021 20:46

Whoops, forgot to share pic...

I'm so heavy
TheWaif · 13/04/2021 20:46

I'm 5'8 and was a size 14 when I weighed 11stone (about 70kg).

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 13/04/2021 20:47

This anecdote gets wheeled out all the time, but Brad Pitt in "Fight Club' had an obese BMI and so did Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was a fitness champion.

Muscular and bone mass vary loads.

SisterAgatha · 13/04/2021 20:48

Some people just carry it on the inside somehow. I’m exactly the same height as you and weight 6lbs less and I’m a 14! I wonder if I have fatty organs (as well as a massive bum)

withmycoffee · 13/04/2021 20:48

Wrist is 6". Or a smidgen under depending on how taut the tape is. I do have thick ankles though Grin
