I'm so heavy

I am 5'3" and a small UK 12. So I'm a little chunky for my height but not anything excessive. I wear mediums In most brands. Being shorter ideally I would be a uk 8 and wear xs but I'm in my 50s and look ok. I work out and have significant muscle but.... I am 80kg. EIGHTY. How am I so heavy?

Actually I do have dense bones. I've had bone density tests for my thyroid and was told I had VERY dense bones Grin

That is very weird @withmycoffee I am the same height as you . I normally weigh around 70 Kg and wear a 14-16. Even with putting weight in over the last year I don't weigh that much.

I would have said there was something wrong with the scales . Even with a lot of muscle mass I can't see how weighing 80 kg is possible . Have you tried weighing on another scale ?

MsAnnFrope · 13/04/2021 20:49

are you sure that your scales are right? I'm an inch shorter than you, size 10/12 and 67kg (and trying to lose weight for a healthy BMI!)

saffysue · 13/04/2021 20:51

I think they say that your waist measurement is quite important in terms of health/diabetes etc.

No need to share on here if you don't want to but it might be worth looking that up as reassurance.

My waist is 30". I used to have a teeny waist but.... menopause. It's still not in the danger zone though.

That is strange. I’m 5’11, size 14 and 72kg.

LizziesTwin · 13/04/2021 20:53

DH is 5’11, late 50s and weighs less than you. His feet are size 9 ½ and his jeans size 34.

Measure your waist and is it more than half your height?

LizziesTwin · 13/04/2021 20:54

What is your ethnicity?

@LizziesTwin

What is your ethnicity?
Mixed Asian Caucasian. So I should be lighter if anything

shinynewapple21 · 13/04/2021 20:55

I'm not quite sure what relevance that has to the OP @LizziesTwin

LizziesTwin · 13/04/2021 20:57

Thank you - I was a bit worried about asking. I think you must just be the exception that proves the rule.

LizziesTwin · 13/04/2021 20:59

Because some ethnicity have denser bones than others, Scandinavian women are more likely to have osteoporosis than women from Sub-Saharan Africa, for example. Also different ethnic groups have different percentages of fast & slow twitch muscles.

DianaT1969 · 13/04/2021 21:00

@Shinynewapple21 - Google 'bone density and ethnicity'.
It's hardly new information.

I'm 5'2 enjoy weightlifting and a good size 12 similar size bra and waist and the heaviest I've ever got to was 68kg.. knowing that without the muscle mass I was around 60kg but a bit wobbly.. you're the same weight as some of the guys I train with, so those bones must be so heavy!

It's fascinating the link to the different ethic structures. I'd never of thought to ask.

Eh? I was commenting on the relevance of the weight and height of Lizzie's husband to the OP!!

LizziesTwin · 13/04/2021 21:14

Because I am amazed that a muscly woman who is not very tall can weigh more than a substantially taller man, who will have more muscle than her due to biology & a heavier & larger bone structure.

BJHair · 13/04/2021 21:19

At 5ft 3 and 80k means your 12 stone 7
I think your scales have eaten to much crap 😂 are you weighing them on a flat surface like a wood floor and not on carpet as I know that if I put my scales on anything like carpet it can be half a stone different
I’m 5ft 6 and have recently lost some weight I was 80k back in Feb and I’m now 73k and aiming for 70k by May
I can’t see how your not overweight unless your built like one of those Russian Olympic Shotputters but even they look overweight to me

maddiemookins16mum · 13/04/2021 21:19

@notagainmummy

your scales are wrong.
This.
QueenPaw · 13/04/2021 21:21

I'm fatter now but even my GP is Confused at my weight
5ft 10 and 15 stone makes me a size 14, 12 stone and I go down to a size 12
I am built like I should be lugging sacks of stuff around/powerlifting though. Broad shoulders and big thighs
(White British but with black Caribbean ancestry)

BJHair · 13/04/2021 21:21

Also where are you buying your clothes from
So many shops do bloody vanity sizing it’s difficult to judge what’s the correct size any more
If you work out a lot so do you wear a lot of sports / Lycra stuff which is much more forgiving in terms of sizes

turnthebiglightoff · 13/04/2021 21:23

I'm 5'3", a size 10-12, and 68kg. I'm lumpy and bumpy and have 36gg boobs, I could afford to lose a stone but when I do my face looks gaunt and I have a large thigh gap. My BMI tells me I'm overweight but honestly, I don't look it - just look like an hourglass shape. When I was working out 2-3 x a week I was 71-73kg and fairly muscly.

BJHair · 13/04/2021 21:26

Heavy bones make a huge difference. I suspect I have these also because I sink in water, even the sea. I'm average height, 29" waist, tiny wrists but chunky ribcage/shoulders (debunks the wrist theory!) I'm not as heavy as you OP, but probably would be if I was weighed with clothes on, as I presume you were in hospital.
Everyone's different ☺️
