Side partings are ageing?

According to an article I've just read apparently side partings are totally ageing and out of fashion and flicking through Instagram there is a definite age divide in partings. Most under 30s all have a poker straight middle parting.
I had a middle parting myself till I was about 30 and then changed to side which I think suits my face -oval, big nose-better than a middle parting but I've just tried a middle parting and honestly think it knocks a good five years off me...possibly as I look more like myself in my 20s though....also the lawyer woman in the undoing who is Nicole Kidman's friend looks younger than the other rich mums and I was thinking it was her middle parting- is this a general hair rule that I've missed ?!

Generally centre partings aren’t as flattering though are they? So you might look younger but not ‘better’?

OooArre · 17/02/2021 22:33

Unfortunately my side parting is totally natural. I remember spending months training my hair into the middle and it was still a nightmare!

AnnieSnap · 17/02/2021 22:34

Interesting! I hadn’t given this any thought previously, but as a mature side parting holder, I’m going to try a middle parting Shock

ursuslemonade · 17/02/2021 22:51

I look even more crappier with middle parting. But I've noticed the popularity of it.

GoryGilmore · 17/02/2021 22:54

I have a natural middle parting but spent years trying to train it to fall into a side parting - I always wanted that big dramatic swoosh of hair to one side. My hair had different ideas however and it never really looked that good, looking back. I started middle parting it again recently and definitely look better for it, glad to be up to date with something fashionable for once!

Rainallnight · 17/02/2021 22:56

Oh my gosh. I’m going to have to experiment. I trained my natural middle parting hair to go to the side but now in my forties maybe it needs to go back!

Rivergreen · 17/02/2021 22:57

It's not that the parting makes you look younger, it's just that it looks more "current" and fashionable which in turn probably makes you look younger iyswim.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/02/2021 22:57

Centre partings look very ageing if you don’t have volume in the back or have curly / frizzy hair. Like a lot of fashionable hair styles it only really works if you are white or east asian with poker straight or committed to getting poker straight hair. Not for me.

Rainallnight · 17/02/2021 23:22

And another drawback is that I think a centre parting accentuates thinning hair if you have any slight problems in that department (thank you fucking peri menopause)

Timpeall · 17/02/2021 23:25

Unless you have a very symmetrical face a side parting is generally much more flattering. The centre parting seems to act like an arrow that divides your face and emphasizes any asymmetry. Side parting doesn't need to mean straight as a ruler and way off to the side.

But sometimes you just need to switch things up a bit!

DishedUp · 17/02/2021 23:29

Its not that it makes you looker younger, its that younger people are more likely to have a middle parting. A middle parting isn't going to magically make you look 16

If you want to try it, feel free but there's absolutely no need to wear one because 16-21 year olds say its in fashion

I've always had a middle parting because I'm blessed with a large forehead and round face and this way it hides the majority of the excess face. But definitely would have been told I had curtains at school! Wear what suits you

TeaAddict235 · 18/02/2021 06:43

Side partings are far more flattering on most faces. Centre partings are very unflattering as they are so blunt and rigid, they do not allow for facial features to be ascenuated, e.g. cheeks, eyes, lips; but rather emphasise how unsymmetrical a face really is. Side partings can also reduce the forehead size and prominence.

Rubbish. I've seen many black and Indian Asian women Rick centre partings. I think your observation is just weird!

This 100%

Yep - side partings and skinny jeans are the new middle-aged signifiers. Well, probably not that new, especially re skinny jeans.

Do we actually care?

I haven’t worn skinny jeans in a while to be fair, but I’m not about to start parting my hair in the middle, because a. that’s not where my parting naturally is, and b. it doesn’t suit me.

tootyfruitypickle · 18/02/2021 07:49

Missing the point obviously but it's come to my attention in recent days (while shopping online for new clothes with teenage dd) that skinny jeans are out and much more baggy are in. I've never worn skinny jeans , but does this mean I'm back in fashion Grin

RacheyCat · 18/02/2021 08:56

I have always had a middle parting, even when it was apparently uncool. I had actually a hairdresser kind of sneer once when I told him to part my hair in the middle, like it was just tragic.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 18/02/2021 10:17

Not all hairstyles suit all faces. I think people would do better to focus on what looks good rather than what looks young.
I'm white with straight hair and a centre parting looks awful on me. OTOH, my friend, who is also white with straight hair looks great with hers - it's about the face

QueenOfPain · 18/02/2021 10:28

Maybe we should just bring those 90s zig zag partings back?

I tried for years to do that Grin
BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 10:52

Oh will give it a try! Thanks op.

SmileyClare · 18/02/2021 10:58

Well this is like saying if you wear a bib you'll look younger. I don't really subscribe to blanket rules like this.

I personally think I look younger with a long side swept fringe because it covers my wrinkled forehead. Smile

CountessFrog · 18/02/2021 11:00

Bib 😂👍

Beachlovingirl · 18/02/2021 11:01

I have a middle parting (well technically it’s about 1 cm to the side of the middle) because I have a square face and the middle parting means some of my squareness is hidden behind hair. And it’s a little bit off centre because of my asymmetrical face, so makes it less obvious. So if middle doesn’t work maybe try that.
I used to have side parting but now it doesn’t look good on me at all! (Especially because I curl my hair a lot so middle looks better balanced and - more flattering for square faces...) Grin

Tallybeebloom · 18/02/2021 11:04

My hair's really curly, if I try a centre parting it just sits like a Christmas tree!
