Side partings are ageing?

Thirtyrock39 · 17/02/2021 22:06

According to an article I've just read apparently side partings are totally ageing and out of fashion and flicking through Instagram there is a definite age divide in partings. Most under 30s all have a poker straight middle parting.
I had a middle parting myself till I was about 30 and then changed to side which I think suits my face -oval, big nose-better than a middle parting but I've just tried a middle parting and honestly think it knocks a good five years off me...possibly as I look more like myself in my 20s though....also the lawyer woman in the undoing who is Nicole Kidman's friend looks younger than the other rich mums and I was thinking it was her middle parting- is this a general hair rule that I've missed ?!

Any time I put a centre parting in my hair I just look like Neil from The Young Ones so I'll be keeping my side part thank you very much.
Also I love my skinny jeans and dainty shoes. Im petite and my legs are my best feature so no way I'm changing to baggy shapeless jeans and clumpy boots/shoes which seems to be what all the yoof are wearing.

HiGunny · 18/02/2021 14:08

Snap @lazylinguist !

BrideofBideford · 18/02/2021 14:28

Haha, but Neil from the Young Ones means nothing to Gen Z Grin

MargosKaftan · 18/02/2021 14:36

If i have my hair straight, then middle parting looks good. And does look younger/more fashionable. But if I let my hair dry naturally in curls, middle parting always makes me look like I live alone with multiple cats.

I'm not blow drying my hair in half term, so its side parting frizz.

rooarsome · 18/02/2021 14:41

Middle partings make my enormous conk look even bigger

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/02/2021 14:54

I’ve been a teacher for 25 years. All the girls have long centre parted hair. It started in the 1990’s and never changed.

So l don’t think it’s ‘new’

Tehmina23 · 18/02/2021 17:09

My parting is usually left a bit casual...
As my hair is fine & curly & I have a fairly round babyish face with growing out highlights that need to see the hairdresser plus some white frizzy hairs in the parting area (attractive) so I'm unsure about a proper centre parting on me.

Tehmina23 · 18/02/2021 17:11

@MindatWork doesnt bother me, I'm gen X

Five67Eight · 18/02/2021 17:19

But you see, that is Gen X all over! The irrelevant generation. It's a smaller generation and is considered a sandwich generation between the larger and more dominant traits of Boomers and Millennials. I love being Gen X!

Shock

‘Irrelevant’ or ‘irreverent’?!

I rather think we Xers are the latter.

HeronLanyon · 18/02/2021 17:21

Racheycat yours of this am really made me laugh just now. Thing is I understood exactly what you meant !

Gen Jones are the ones after Boomers. So Gen X is between Gen Jones and Millennials. Although they do cross over.

I think this must be the article I read about 1977 (up to 1983) born peeps not being Gen X.

Xennials.

Wedlock · 18/02/2021 18:07

I must admit I did try a centre parting today. I looked like a mennonite. It's a no from me.

Yeah, that is if you go down the route of 'micro' generations where the standardly accepted generational groups are further broken down. It's not the normally discussed way of looking at the generational groups

Gen Jones are another 'micro' generation which is not standard. People are always trying to further categorise the generations but they aren't what are used in standard discussions about generational groups. The standard Generations groups are people born during:
The Lost Generation 1883-1900
The Greatest Generation 1901-1927
The Silent Generation 1928 - 1945
Baby Boomers 1946-1964
Gen X 1965 - 1980
Millennials 1981 - 1996
Gen Z 1997 - 2012
Gen Alpha 2010/2012 -

Different metrics will have slight variations on start and finish years but this is the standard grouping. All the other random micro-generations are just add-ins that people have more recently created to try to further characterise behaviour and attitude differences between people of different ages but they aren't used much.

I'd like to challenge this.... May I introduce you to the 'turnip' leg, a flattering leg shape I am pioneering in middle age Grin

Wedlock · 18/02/2021 18:30

I hadn't heard of Generation Alpha before. They sound like they're going to be assertive.

PerfidiousAlbion · 18/02/2021 18:40

Am I the only one who moves my parting around from day to day?

It stops me getting bored.

I've stopped short at a comb over so far though! Grin

All the women/girls I know under 25 have long wavy centre parted 'swishy' hair that they constantly flick about.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/02/2021 19:23

Withmycoffee, I really disagree!!!

It depends on who is your reference! Different marketeers use different generalisations

FWIW I was born right at the end of 63. I never fitted with the Boomers. I hated all the hippy peace love thing. It left me cold. I had nothing in common with the free love generation.

I distrusted the government as a young adult (Conservative) and was really cynical about the free love generation, MTV defined my generation, not the Beatles. Boomers had cheap properties that rose hugely in price and the ‘gold plated pensions’ . We missed all that.

So lt does exist. Barack Obama was one, and so is Kamal Harris.

BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 19:24

No, @PerfidiousAlbion, not just you! I do like to play with mine. Mine has changed side recently. I am growing out a pixie cut and the in between stage involved much playing around. Now it's mid neck length and fairly even, it does look nice in a middle parting. Not sure why I hadn't really tried it for a while, but it does seem to suit me, so I'm pleased I saw this thread!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/02/2021 19:32

I had a side parting for many years. Well, forever really. Swapped to middle about 4 years ago. I prefer it, more trendy. I'm iny 40s.

The reason you don't 'feel' like a Boomer is because you are a 'cusper'. There are cuspers between ALL the generational groups, not just between Boomers and Gen X. Some people try to give them names but they aren't 'official' generations. Cuspers have traits of both generations and don't feel particular affinity with people born in the middle of a generation range.
thewinehasgonetomyhead · 18/02/2021 20:16

Does anyone feel like they look naff with both a side parting AND a centre parting? I only feel I look mildly okay-ish with my hair up and away from my face, ponytail or half-up-half-down. Even then if I see photos of myself I think that looks shite so feel like I should retry another way, and it just goes around in circles!

Shinesun14 · 18/02/2021 20:19

I look like a 60s flower child but not in a good way with a centre parting. My hairs way too long and think for that!

BigWindow · 18/02/2021 20:23

I’m sure I saw a thread on MN recently where it was a common opinion that fringes are ‘ageing/old fashioned’.

Wtf are we supposed to DO with our hair? So many rules I don’t understand Grin.
