Side partings are ageing?

Thirtyrock39 · 17/02/2021 22:06

According to an article I've just read apparently side partings are totally ageing and out of fashion and flicking through Instagram there is a definite age divide in partings. Most under 30s all have a poker straight middle parting.
I had a middle parting myself till I was about 30 and then changed to side which I think suits my face -oval, big nose-better than a middle parting but I've just tried a middle parting and honestly think it knocks a good five years off me...possibly as I look more like myself in my 20s though....also the lawyer woman in the undoing who is Nicole Kidman's friend looks younger than the other rich mums and I was thinking it was her middle parting- is this a general hair rule that I've missed ?!

Tried a middle parting after my shower and it looked awful. I looked 10 years older!

What pisses me off the most is that it's so sexist. It's basically the Karen meme in a different form. They're not issuing rules about how to spot a Gen X man, are they? Because women in their 40s and older are there to be sneered at. Men in their 40s and older? Nope, they're still valuable Angry

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/02/2021 20:53

I'm sorry but too short bangs, mom jeans and middle parts with no make up, overly baggy clothes and a vacant expression only work if you're young and can wear anything and you'll still look shit.

Same as our 'don't give a shit' uniform of baggy combats, piercings and a fuck you expression. We were glowing babies and could get away with it.

ElizaLaLa · 18/02/2021 20:57

Let's bring back slight bootcuts and zig zag partings.

ElizaLaLa · 18/02/2021 20:58

Mom Jean's are hideous. Lets being back slight bootcuts. They were flattering. And I'm def going to start the zig zag parting back up.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/02/2021 21:19

Hmm no to zig zag parts. However, I'm reclaiming undercut/shaved sides from these whippersnappers. I had that in the 90s so it's mine!!!

@Ughmaybenot

Oh god who cares? I’m 26, my hair is in a side parting and I wear skinny jeans sometimes.. I couldn’t care less what some 20 year old said on tiktok and it makes me feel a bit sad that anyone cares. Surely the goal here isn’t to try to emulate every single identikit kid on Instagram? And I’m not even much older myself 😂 Wear what makes you happy and what you think looks nice. Wear your hair in a way that suits you.

@SmileyClare

Well this is like saying if you wear a bib you'll look younger. I don't really subscribe to blanket rules like this.

I personally think I look younger with a long side swept fringe because it covers my wrinkled forehead. Smile

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I’ve been a teacher for 25 years. All the girls have long centre parted hair. It started in the 1990’s and never changed.

So l don’t think it’s ‘new’

We definitely all had side partings when I was a teen in 2008ish, a lot of girls had the side fringes too often covering one eye! Layers and feathered hair was more popular too. To me it seems a lot of the 90s fashion teens considered hideously out of date and uncool back then (because it was the look of the previous decade) has now come back around again.
orchidsonabudget · 19/02/2021 08:29

I am 1977!!!
What are we meant to wear if not skinny jeans?

(I am too fat for jeans atm)

DurhamDurham · 19/02/2021 08:33

I've tried a middle parting and although it doesn't make me look younger it does make me look like a rather sinister witch....I'm usually so inoffensive looking Grin

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/02/2021 08:34

I remember the side partings and fringes, but they were quite often on boys doing the ‘Scene’ look.

Dd 14 has central parted long hair, and so do all her friends. It’s still the most popular hair style by miles with teens. I know because it’s something l often wonder about. Like why do they all have the same hairstyle?

SwanShaped · 19/02/2021 08:45

Just tried a centre parting. Looked awful. Like I did when I was 15. What I don’t get, is why jeans are all so short these days! In winter. Fine in summer but I can’t seem to find any jeans that are a normal length.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/02/2021 08:59

I tried it and it looked...alright. Certainly wouldn't have said I looked any younger. Slightly worried that as I have curly hair, it gave me a faint look of cocker spaniel.

HeronLanyon · 19/02/2021 09:22

About to have shower. Will be trying out a centre parting on exit. This will involve battling with a very strong cow lick which won’t be happy. Feel as though yet another wfh day now has purpose. May even add this to my ‘calendar’ for today then cross it off as ‘achieved’.

Standrewsschool · 19/02/2021 18:02

Had my haircut before Christmas and did some research beforehand. I concluded that ‘curtain fringes’ were ‘in’. Mentioned it to my hairdresser but he concluded side-parting would suit my face best (gen x).

Never heard of gen-alpha either.

5128gap · 19/02/2021 18:11

Am very smug now as I have a centre parting already! And no fringe!
And after learning that skinny jeans make you look like a millennial I'm positively preening, given I'm 52.

AIMD · 19/02/2021 18:16

Side partings are a bit unfashionable I think (I’m tens of young people Fashion).... at least that’s what tictok tells me. I switch between middle and side parting, more comfortable with a side paying but I think that’s because what I’ve worn longer.

M0rT · 19/02/2021 18:20

@SwanShaped I have thick curly hair, when I was a teenager my friend trimmed it for me...so it ended up at my shoulders as she couldn't get it even so just kept cutting trying to even it out.
When I went home my toddler brother sat on my lap and patted my head and said I looked lovely, like a poodle Grin

SmileyClare · 19/02/2021 18:30

It gave me a faint look of cocker spaniel sorry but Grin

TroyTown · 19/02/2021 19:01

The cocker spaniel is an attractive dog, though 😀

Five67Eight · 19/02/2021 19:04

Again - a centre parting isn’t going to make you look younger. It’s going to (arguably) make you look more current.

But just because something makes you look current / fashionable - doesn’t mean it makes you look better.

dontgobaconmyheart · 19/02/2021 19:07

I know this has been in the news the last week but it is a bit daft. Whilst it's presumably true it's no longer the height of cool to have a side parting and the rest of it it doesn't change the fact that no one thing fits all, we do not all have the same face shape, hair texture and features.
I look measurably worse with a middle part whether I look younger or not and I've seen plenty of young people who just don't suit the middle partimg they are wedded to. It can look very severe and plain on some, especially when the hair is thin, straight and on the oily side it has some serious shape vibes. I look like one of the founding fathers if I middle part my hair and then pull it into a low ponytail, as do many others! Whether I like it or not doesn't change it.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/02/2021 19:21

Centre partings are a young thing so yes, in a sense, side partings are ageing, but as one of the first posters pointed out, they're more flattering.

superram · 19/02/2021 19:24

I loved my zigzag parting-definitely brining that back! My side parting has been in so long it looks like I used an axe, not sure I could change it even if I wanted to.

LookingGlassMilk · 19/02/2021 19:53

I got rid of my side parting that I had since I was 18 almost a year ago during the first lockdown, when I decided to give myself a haircut. I've got a fringe now though, and it's about 20% grey, so I don't think I can pass as a zoomer.

I very glad to see the back of skinny jeans. I have never liked them, and have always had at least one pair of flares on the go the whole time. I am very top heavy and I need flares or wide legged trousers to balance me out.
