Side partings are ageing?

Thirtyrock39 · 17/02/2021 22:06

According to an article I've just read apparently side partings are totally ageing and out of fashion and flicking through Instagram there is a definite age divide in partings. Most under 30s all have a poker straight middle parting.
I had a middle parting myself till I was about 30 and then changed to side which I think suits my face -oval, big nose-better than a middle parting but I've just tried a middle parting and honestly think it knocks a good five years off me...possibly as I look more like myself in my 20s though....also the lawyer woman in the undoing who is Nicole Kidman's friend looks younger than the other rich mums and I was thinking it was her middle parting- is this a general hair rule that I've missed ?!

@LostPencilSOS

What I want to know is this : if they're not wearing skinny jeans, what are they wearing ? I've not seen any other jeans in shops except skinny jeans. And mom jeans.
If it's mom jeans they're wearing then that's just funny 😂 (yes that is a crying laughing emoji, I'm 36)

I work with a lot of young women. Most of them don't seem to wear jeans - they're in leggings or dungarees (these are very popular) or harem pants. Those who do wear jeans either wear mom jeans or those sort of jogging bottom style ones that are cuffed at the ankle. Which are bare and exposed to the elements now matter how cold it is. 🥶

The only one I know who wore skinnies was very curvy and liked to show off her figure.

When I was a teenager (back in the 90s, so I'm probably ancient and irrelevant enough to be safely ignored) centre partings were known as "fanny partings" because they apparently looked like an unwaxed vulva (yes, most women had pubic hair back then too, it's like a whole new world). I don't think it was an accurate comparison but it always put me off wearing my hair like that, especially as it's naturally curly and it was already compared with pubes as it was. I've actually just started to wear it curly again after years of straightening and if I try to part it down the middle, I do look like Crystal Tipps, so I shall stick with my Gen X signifying side parting, thanks. I don't like skinny jeans, though - currently wearing a pair of lovely flares but I also have straight leg and mom styles.

hollyandkit · 22/02/2021 09:41

I miss the days when the only things that made you look older were a tartan shopping bag on wheels and a plastic rain hat. I'm 48 so hopefully can ignore all this parting business anyway. And mom jeans are just beyond the pale.

Thirtyrock39 · 22/02/2021 11:39

I'm going with the centre parting today but will not be giving up my skinny jeans !! Kids all given it the big thumbs up 👍🏻

@Greebive just I've just realised why all the tops are cropped 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

LostPencilSOS · 22/02/2021 12:01

Ignore above random @ to no one !! Definitely getting old 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@GreebolsMySpiritAnimal oh leggings you say! Wahoo, I'm back to being young and fashionable 😂😂😂😂 (laughing crying emojis not withstanding)

Only if you're wearing them with crop tops! Leggings with tops that cover your bum seem to be strictly reserved for those over 30. Wink

MacDuffsMuff · 22/02/2021 12:26

I look ridiculous with a centre parting so I'll stick with a side as it doesn't make me look demented.

I can't be arsed with all the 'Generation' this, that and the other. What a load of shite.

praecantator · 22/02/2021 14:49

It's so strange, this 'ageing' panic. Hmm
Surely, style is knowing what one suits and what doesn't, and wearing it the way that brings out ones' best features?
Who cares what/how tweens/teens/20-somethings etc. etc. ad nauseam, wear something?

LostPencilSOS · 22/02/2021 14:50

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal how about an oversized any jumper with leggings tries hard**

I'm too fat for crop tops 🥺

Fuck it.

I can't give up is this emoji 😂😂😂😂

ginandwineandbaileys · 22/02/2021 14:52

I don't understand the need to impress young things. Surely they'll all realise how wrong they got it in around a decade anyway

Chimeraforce · 22/02/2021 15:22

Used to have a side parting. Very nice. But my fine hair has become even finer so I've been forced to have a centre parting. It doesn't suit me but at least it hides the receding line at the sides 🙄

adrianmolesmole · 22/02/2021 15:59

Late 40s, always had a middle parting, nice to know I'm trendy now Grin Mine has always refused to part on the side no matter what, so I just leave it to do what it wants. IDGAF.

DailyCandy · 22/02/2021 16:14

I can do either - but I have very symmetrical face. I have super long lashes also - I don't know whether to curl and comb them up, or coax them to the side for a more elongated eye. Decisions decisions. Wink

Sorry to say, I'm not sure dressing like a teenager makes an older person trendy.

Lol. I was a teenager in the 90s too and most girls at school had centre partings.
iklboo · 22/02/2021 16:41

I look a tool with a middle parting.

bourbonne · 22/02/2021 16:42

Yeah I remember side partings being treated with ridicule in the 90s/00s. I used to part my hair just the minimum possible amount to the side (and only at the front, at that!) so it would be flattering but not count as a side parting. I don't know what I thought would happen if I turned up to school with a proper side parting - social ruination, probably.

Five67Eight · 22/02/2021 17:29
  • Sorry to say, I'm not sure dressing like a teenager makes an older person trendy.

I’m pretty sure the Grin was meant to signify exactly that.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 23/02/2021 17:58

Well I tried a centre parting. Looked shit but at least I could use my frown lines to get it dead on.

MoltenLasagne · 23/02/2021 18:11

I dunno about centre partings, I'd love to go full retro and get a proper 80s perm. I missed out on them first time round and my natural waves have never quite passed muster. Unfortunately it's not really a thing in hairdressers unless I also fancy a blue rinse (not to be confused with the apparently ever so cool grey / blue dye)

31RooCambon · 23/02/2021 18:12

My hair just does not go in to a side part

TheVampiresWife · 23/02/2021 21:13

I've had a centre parting since falling in love with the Pre Raphaelites when I was a pretentious teenager in the late 80s. Which tells you precisely which gen I am.

I've been fashionable on and off for decades, but equally I've been unfashionable on and off too. Looks like my time has come again!

ElizaLaLa · 24/02/2021 12:49

I washed and straightened my hair on sunday, and put a centre parting in, after having a side parting for the last 30 years, roughly.

DH hasn't stopped telling me how well I look, and tanned and healthy etc.

I have just hit a stone loss though so it could just be that.

In my opinion though, when I have my glasses on, I do look like olive from on the buses 🤣

Dailywalk · 25/02/2021 15:20

With this thread in mind, I have parted my hair in the centre this week rather than usual side parting. Twice this week someone has been surprised that I am old enough to have a dd at high school.

I think you’re onto something OP Grin
