Canada Goose - too hot for London?

londonmummy1234 · 04/02/2021 22:01

I brought myself a Canada Goose Mystique Parka... it was pricey at £1100 but apparently lasts forever blah blah.
It arrived today and it feels really hot and heavy to wear but all the other mums in London seem to be wearing CG?!
What's people's experiences with it and if too hot can they offer an alternative?
Looking for a long coat and padded! Thanks

Where are these areas of SW London where people wouldn’t be seen dead in CG by the way? I think I need to move there!

SweatyBetty20 · 05/02/2021 10:36

Drug dealer/gang coat up here in Manchester. If you want a warm, cruelty free down jacket go for Mountain Equipment - their down is taken from animals already slaughtered for eating.

Brieminewine · 05/02/2021 10:44

Mines the Ellison down jacket, it’s lightweight so you’re not roasting but does keep you lovely and warm. It doesn’t have the fur trim either. I’d recommend it, it’s perfect for running errands, dog walking etc

SweatyBetty20 · 05/02/2021 10:45

If anyone's interested here's the ethical down policy that ME and others adhere to - www.thedowncodex.co.uk/

I'd also go for Patagonia (or Patagucci, as my other half calls it!).

BilboBercow · 05/02/2021 10:46

Cruelty aspect aside I fine Canada Goose jackets ugly and a bit vulgar.

stealthbanana · 05/02/2021 10:58

Curious that people think them vulgar. They are plain coats with (sometimes) a small badge on one arm. Don’t get it.

They’re certainly ugly but unfortunately warm coats just are.

PattyPan · 05/02/2021 11:07

They’re vulgar in the same way that Chelsea tractors are vulgar

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 05/02/2021 11:13

If you know enough about them to know that they are filled with down and often have real fur trim, of course you will see them as vulgar.

chestnutshell · 05/02/2021 11:23

@stealthbanana because in MN everything has a class association apparently.

FWIW I wouldn’t be seen dead in half the stuff people post on here but I’d never be as rude as some people are about what’s essentially a very personal choice.

BottegaBish · 05/02/2021 11:31

I really like this..

Here's an article about why CG is boycotted. It's a peta article.

www.peta.org/blog/fall-winter-peta-ups-the-ante-against-canada-goose/

Mn doesn't dislike CG because they are expensive.

PBJelly · 05/02/2021 11:34

@chestnutshell but isn’t there a difference between fashion and ethics?

IMO criticism of someone’s style is not the same as criticism of someone’s ethics. Wearing something that other people just don’t find to their taste isn’t actually doing any harm, so people should probably not pass judgement (fashion). Wearing something that other people know causes harm to animals (or to people or to the environment) is different (ethics).

If we didn’t call each other out for making choices which have a negative impact on others, I’m not sure how much we’d really progress as a society. We need to challenge each other on these things.

Same as if someone says they’re buying Boohoo, I’d say they should do some research about modern slavery. And the environmental impact of fast fashion.

Iamthewombat · 05/02/2021 11:36

I was going to suggest Woolrich OP, until I saw that you had already considered it and discounted it because of supply problems (useful tip from a PP about their shop though).

Woolrich are cooler to wear than CG in my experience.

I liked the Prada coat linked upthread too.

nevernotstruggling · 05/02/2021 11:40

Same as if someone says they’re buying Boohoo, I’d say they should do some research about modern slavery. And the environmental impact of fast fashion.

Absolutely. I told friends I was boycotting boohoo and a few other outlets. Didn't get a great reaction sadly.

bleachykeen · 05/02/2021 11:50

As someone who lives in Canada I would find them too hot unless it was at least minus 15. People wear them for fashion/trendiness, not for the cold. How many of us are outside in -20 for extended periods of time?

I don't know about the animal cruelty? It's surely cruel to rip feathers off live birds repeatedly. Is that where they get the feathers? As for the coyote fur I guess it's from hunting? Are there such things as coyote farms? I don't think so?

I admit I couldn't care less about the coyote hunting. They are beautiful animals and I have seem them many times. We have a lot of them. The dens come and go. When they return they run down the streets yipping and barking at night. We used to have foxes where we lived for many years but the coyotes came (ate them) and ate the cottontail rabbits to near extinction and then we had a lot of missing cats and dogs. Two larger dogs were stalked and bitten. One week I saw four separate missing cat posters within 500 yards of my house. We're in a town of 100,000 near Toronto. Then the coyotes suffered a year of disease and the rabbits came back in droves. Now the coyotes have returned and the rabbits are hiding. The coyotes know they are safe to run the neighborhoods because you cannot hunt within a town obviously. I have two large dogs and the rabbits are constantly nesting here because the dogs keep the coyotes away (doesn't work with single or small dogs).

I guess I am trying to say in a very long winded way that sometimes I find people in the UK/mumsnet have a lot of opinions about things but no actual experience. If wonder how you feel if you had coyotes stalking your neighborhood to eat your smaller dogs or cats? I'd rather coyote fur than dog fur from China.

Donann · 05/02/2021 12:02

Brand lost all credibility. Drug dealers jackets

Crappyfridays7 · 05/02/2021 12:03

You spent £2200 ordering 2 padded parkas that you’re now sending back? Just get a jacket you like not sure why you’re buying a winter coat in Feb though as you’ll not get much wear out of it? Wait until new stuff comes out later in the year and buy something else to see you into late spring?

I don’t think wrapping yourself in a duvet is a great idea. And also wearing what all the other ‘London mums’ wear is a bit boring. Get something a bit different, as you clearly can afford it be unique. An add popped up on my fb for CG recently hats were £70 madness for a bit of wool. Hopefully you’ll manage to treat yourself to something nice

chestnutshell · 05/02/2021 12:05

@PBJelly I just think there’s better ways of raising this with the OP than some of the really rude and judgemental comments she’s had. It’s the cry laughing emojis and “if you’d done just a minute of research...” type comments. I just don’t understand why people can’t just say “personally I’m against CD because XYZ so I would go for X instead.” Everybody has their own hard line of where ethics stops too. People are happy enough to declare CD unethical but recommend other down costs. Or recommend brands made in sweatshops. And then god forbid anybody suggest that others go vegan. You see it on discussions about 4x4s too. I just think that a reasonable comment about what you choose for yourself personally can be much more persuasive than the combative approach I see on here so often.

I say this as somebody who is trying to have a completely plant based diet btw and doesn’t buy down, leather, silk or wool anymore so I don’t have skin in the game of keeping CD mainstream. But also, I came to this way of thinking gradually overtime and try and remember that there was a point I didn’t have a good understanding of the ethics surrounding clothing/diet etc. and I wouldn’t have liked being made to feel stupid on a public forum either.

Candyfloss99 · 05/02/2021 12:08

Have you not seen the people campaigning outside the shop in London about the outrageous animal cruelty that goes on to make these coats? I would be embarrassed to wear one to be honest.

choosername1234 · 05/02/2021 12:11

Am I the only person who doesn't notice what other people are wearing?

Snally82 · 05/02/2021 12:11

@londonmummy1234

I really want to splash out on a nice coat but just can't find one!
Holland And Cooper??
snowliving · 05/02/2021 12:13

CG is very popular in my bit of the Midwest.
It is a lot colder here than London though.

Patagonia and Landsend both do warm coats although neither are that stylish.

That said CG are pretty staid black coats over here hardly brash or super stylish.

I'm not understanding the issue some people have with wool? A sheep that isn't shorn will suffer and the sheep aren't bred for wool it is just a by product.

nevernotstruggling · 05/02/2021 12:26

@choosername1234

Am I the only person who doesn't notice what other people are wearing?
Perhaps. But this is a style and beauty thread.
PBJelly · 05/02/2021 12:26

@chestnutshell I do see what you mean - I agree that there are ways of raising issues that can be more positive/constructive. Maybe I misread/misunderstood your original comment but I think I was just objecting to the idea that we shouldn’t criticise others choices when there’s an ethical element to it.

I also completely agree there’s a lot of grey area and people have different lines they draw in the sand.

I’m vegan and don’t buy fur, down, leather etc. I have second hand wool items and I buy recycled wool items - as I’d rather that than buy new especially if new is plastic based - but other vegans wouldn’t wear wool either. So I do agree there’s a lot to consider.

I recommended a couple of non-down coats to the OP Save the Duck is one. I have a a parka from Noize which someone else recommended upthread. And Embassy of Bricks and Logs is another brand that does non down coats. Just in case anyone’s interested!

Maybe we should start a vegan clothes thread.
