Canada Goose - too hot for London?

londonmummy1234 · 04/02/2021 22:01

I brought myself a Canada Goose Mystique Parka... it was pricey at £1100 but apparently lasts forever blah blah.
It arrived today and it feels really hot and heavy to wear but all the other mums in London seem to be wearing CG?!
What's people's experiences with it and if too hot can they offer an alternative?
Looking for a long coat and padded! Thanks

@Highfalutinlootin

Virtue signal received, over.

Meanwhile, nearly everyone will go on owning down coats from other brands, down comforters etc. Most down comes from the same suppliers and most have the same issues. People just latched on to Canada Goose because for a while they were one of the most expensive and visible favorites of the middle class, so an easy target for class hatred. I'm sure everyone who could never bring themselves to wear CG is a lifestyle began with totally coherent ethical brand choices. Hmm

No. Down and fur coats are cruel. I would avoid buying them.
stealthbanana · 04/02/2021 23:27

I have one (bought it second hand on eBay, suggest you return yours and do that if you want one, mine was £250 and I’m not contributing to buying new fur) and it’s not too hot at all. But I don’t wear it on the tube, I wear it when hanging around outside with the kids so not moving much. It’s changed my life (I run cold normally) - uniqlo doesn’t compare.

Parka... it was pricey at £1100

Ha, ha, ha bong.

That was me laughing my head off.

atimetobe · 04/02/2021 23:29

Uniqlo!

MissMarks · 04/02/2021 23:30

If you don’t mind fur Popski London are nice

Anoisagusaris · 04/02/2021 23:31

In Dublin CG is now worn by drug dealers and wannabe drug dealers.

AfterSchoolWorry · 04/02/2021 23:32

@OverByYer

It’s only drug dealers who wear CG coats where I live
Same here (Ireland) drug dealers and gangs.
Branleuse · 04/02/2021 23:34

Id send it back. Theres probably about 2 or 3 weeks in february where youd be able to wear it.

Turnedouttoes · 04/02/2021 23:34

Personally I think they’re too hot for London. But I’m also someone who has to strip off my coat and jumper the minute I get on the train in the mornings after a 15 minute walk to the station as I’m overheating in winter.
I think it depends on the person. I have a friend who also had one and he’d be wearing it no problem in a hot sweaty bar while I’d be wearing a blouse and be feeling hot!

Mumblechum0 · 04/02/2021 23:37

Naff and cruel. Wouldn’t be seen dead in cG

hobbyiscodefordogging · 04/02/2021 23:38

@fairynick thank god you told us you're a vegan 😆

I'm not. I like leather, and wool, and silk. But not fur and down. You do know there's a whole middle ground and it doesn't have to be all or nothing, right?

Squarepigeon · 04/02/2021 23:44

When did become acceptable to wear fur?

NanuNanuM · 04/02/2021 23:48

I live rural. CG were popular 4yrs ago. Then the animal cruelty came up.
Didriksons are still popular and very warm. Might not be London high street though.

MythSpentYouth · 04/02/2021 23:49

I have spent time in a Canadian winter.
Snow 4’ deep for 4 months, ice 2’ thick on the lake, Months of sub zero temperatures, you can’t even nip to the shop in the corner of the block without putting on serious warm clothing. There are laws about what clothing you must send your kids to school in, if they have no snowsuit you can be prosecuted.

Even then I didn’t see anyone in CG.

The clothing designed for an outdoor arctic environment is definitely not needed London.

Ridiculous status symbol. Hence drug dealers.

However you do need something warm and practical. It’s a park not a party.

augustusglupe · 04/02/2021 23:56

DD has one and she's in London. Only wears it occasionally though and she tends to detach the fur.
I've just googled your coat OP looks gorgeous!

PattyPan · 04/02/2021 23:56

I object to down too. I’ve just ordered a waterproof jacket from Rapanui. I prefer to layer to minimise the chance of roasting on the tube due to a too-heavy coat. London barely gets below zero so you’re never going to benefit from a really heavy coat for everyday use.

itwillbehormones · 04/02/2021 23:57

Mango have a long parka, the other poster mentioned on Instagram cholelovestoshop I saw her wearing it and grabbed one if fab like a long duvet.

But quality 300+ sweaty Betty coats and Barbour?

minipie · 04/02/2021 23:58

I live in SW London (different area from you OP, further south) and am surrounded by Canada Goose wearing mums too. I’m depressed by how acceptable fur seems to have become here.

Superdry do some coats which look very similar but with faux fur and without such a huge price tag. Their down is “responsible” apparently (although I know there’s some controversy around that label).

CremeEgg2019 · 04/02/2021 23:59

In my neck of the woods (also SW London) it’s all about the Dryrobe. Toasty, light, long and waterproof!

NeverRTFT · 04/02/2021 23:59

I'm told woolrich is the way to go

MoltonSilver · 05/02/2021 00:01

I see a lot around here too. I don't understand it. They're more suited to Arctic conditions. I'd pass out with the heat.

CorianderBee · 05/02/2021 00:02

There are protests outside the store every few weeks before Covid. There's a lot of hate for the brand around here. I've seen people wearing the jackets be shouted at on the tube.

Katie1784 · 05/02/2021 00:04

@N4ish

I would be more concerned about receiving abuse from people who find Canada Goose clothing cruel. Have seen stickers on the tube highlighting animal cruelty issues around this brand so not everyone in London is a fan!

Have to say no London mum I know would ever wear one.

I'm a London mum and it's not a brand i'd want to be associated with. Pre-Covid,there was an anti fur protest outside CG in Regent St every day.
Thedarknightsarelifting · 05/02/2021 00:30

Canada goose not in where I am for all the same reasons posted previously.

Dryrobes are only for mums who have taken up sea swimming and seek insta fame Hmm in my area too.

Uniqlo down coat £160ish is very popular.

I indulged in a Theory down coat and hated it on arrival as too warm.

Carrive · 05/02/2021 08:09

Uniqlo - relatively inexpensive and there are a few options for thickness in all jacket/coat lengths. I find these very effective in UK climate, outside of the London area and if you need to, you can add one of their gilets underneath (which are really thin but effective and from my experience in London, are worn by many under smart jackets when the weather starts to warm up but not yet warm enough - saw this a lot on the tube). I typically get 2 years wear out of my coat and that is with very regular use, before they start to look a bit worn (although still fine). They are so light, they can be rolled up into a very small ball, do not crease, and can go anywhere with you - even on hols to warm countries for the evening. Massive Uniqlo fan here lol
