Canada Goose - too hot for London?

londonmummy1234 · 04/02/2021 22:01

I brought myself a Canada Goose Mystique Parka... it was pricey at £1100 but apparently lasts forever blah blah.
It arrived today and it feels really hot and heavy to wear but all the other mums in London seem to be wearing CG?!
What's people's experiences with it and if too hot can they offer an alternative?
Looking for a long coat and padded! Thanks

There is a reason people wear them inside out to hide the logo.

Cruelty.

chestnutshell · 05/02/2021 12:29

@PBJelly see this is the kind of interaction I come to MN for. Adult women talking with respect to each other. I was conflating the two issues a bit but I was trying to make the point that people are just really rude on this forum sometimes.

Vegan clothes thread sounds great!

pilotsprincess · 05/02/2021 12:32

I have a CG victoria parka. Ive had it 4 years and havent had to buy another coat in that time, i love it and wear it lots! One of my best buys

bellsbuss · 05/02/2021 12:38

I've had mine 5 years and I love it , OH bought us one each as standing outside watching our son play sport outside in all weathers wasn't much fun. They were bought to keep us warm and not as a fashion statement. Lots of other parents wear them too now I've noticed.

Ldnmum7 · 05/02/2021 12:41

Also OP, you don't have long left now until it starts to warm up again. 6 or 7 weeks maximum unless we get an unusually cold Easter. I'd probably wait for sale now or new season stuff in September. I always like the look of Max Mara too (not sure about how ethical it is). Understated and classic. I've seen a lot of the towie cast wear CG which says it all really....

midnightstar66 · 05/02/2021 12:47

Maybe for London but it's been minus temperatures here in Scotland for weeks now and I suffer from Raynauds which means I'm eternally cold anyway - you can send it to me OP Grin

DavidsSchitt · 05/02/2021 12:50

"I did do research and it seemed the fur was from humane sources. I actually did quite a bit of reading and it all seemed good"

😂 you need to brush up on your "research"

Also, crack dealer is not a good look

Snookie00 · 05/02/2021 13:04

Many people (Scottish countryside) round here wear Rab jackets or Barbours. Only people who wear Canada Goose are the massively over privileged teenagers who are going for the wanna be drug dealer vibe. For city dwellers who go no further than the park, it’s as unnecessary and “more money than taste” as a RangeRover

londonmummy1234 · 05/02/2021 13:07

Thanks for the tip about the Woolrich shop! Will look into it.

Oh the sneering about ‘looking like a drug dealer’! It’s hilarious. How dare you want to buy an expensive coat, OP. Can’t you just settle for Uniqlo?

JaneNorman · 05/02/2021 14:52

OP I wouldn’t spend that amount of money on a coat based on all the time you’re spending outdoors this year. I do sympathise because I too have felt the cold in SW London this winter because of all the time spent outside. I went for a decent North Face parka in the sale. I think it was about £200. Plenty warm enough and super waterproof. I also think you need a coat without a fur hood for the rain.

People saying get a nice wool coat, wtf? Terrible in the rain and if you’ve got small kids I find you need something that’s machine washable.

DavidsSchitt · 05/02/2021 15:14

"Oh the sneering about ‘looking like a drug dealer’! It’s hilarious. How dare you want to buy an expensive coat, OP"

It's not the price tag 🤦🏽‍♀️ it's the actual coat of choice for the little scally drug dealers

Dobedohdahdee · 05/02/2021 15:19

I’m just outside London, but in a place where lots of people commute to London for work and CG definitely seen as quite “chavvy” (sorry I know that word is not popular on mumsnet)

I know some very posh people & none of them would wear it.

Also I note the concerns about animal welfare, although I can’t comment myself as I’ve not researched it as I have no interest in wearing CG

BikeRunSki · 05/02/2021 15:25

OP, if you want serious warmth and waterproofing, construction quality that will last a lifetime and excellent ethical credentials, look at Patagonia. They use a lot of recycled down.

Honestly, if you want a CG coat buy it second hand! Vestiaire and eBay both always have loads. Mine is in great condition and it means when I trash it by picking up muddy kids etc I don’t feel at all previous about it.

Also not seeing why having a 4x4 is “crass”. Who cares?! It must be exhausting to live in MN Little Britain sometimes.

startingtosmileagain · 05/02/2021 16:33

I've just bought a Didriksons parka from Brandalley - great reviews.

You can also get £20 off using my code Brandalley Grin

My husband bought a CG years ago, when in Canada and it's not that warm (well not as warm as his old North Face, or my Tog24)

Angrymum22 · 05/02/2021 17:59

Never heard of CG but then I’m deep into Barber country so all the mums in the know wear Barber or similar here. I find layering with silk and cashmere base layers is more suitable for our climate. So you look the part whatever layer you’re wearing.
If it gets really cold we just turn up the heating in the Range Rover after a bracing 5k walk with the dogs.

Redruby2020 · 05/02/2021 23:28

@Clymene That's what I was thinking, I haven't seen any, maybe I need to look mire closely!

Divebar2021 · 06/02/2021 00:17

I don’t actually think it’s been that cold this winter... one snowy day and a lot of days above 8 degrees. There’s only one mum at our school gate who wears CG and she’s very attached to it. Wears it when I’ve been in just a jumper... I wonder if it’s moody and therefore not as warm?. I certainly don’t see that many about on my commute into Central London and don’t think they’re a big London trend. I have a long puffa from DKNY for park duty but would never wear it up town unless it was bitterly cold as I’d swelter on the underground and in shops etc. Not that practical for rainy days either.

It really is down here. Though they also love a Moncler coat too.
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 06/02/2021 00:40

It's a brand by which to identify dealers and Countryfile presenters.

Your kids' school isn't at the top of Ben Nevis, so its total overkill.

theyosherman · 06/02/2021 00:45

CG is a complete overkill for London, and most of the UK. I used to live in Canada and when it's -20 (or lower 😱) it's when you start appreciating the coat. Otherwise complete waist on money.
I was really surprised when they opened a flagship store in London few years ago, as I couldn't understand how so many would actually need one.
So you see, the difference is - in some countries you NEED one, and some you WANT one.
Was too expensive anyway and plenty of amazing, more stylish alternatives out there.
They definitely have good marketing.

AnnaFiveTowns · 06/02/2021 00:48

Cruelty aside, the weight of it makes it feel like you're wearing a suit of armour (I tried my neighbour's on once - she said she never wore it as it's too hot and heavy) Plus the naffness factor.

Sparrowfeeder · 06/02/2021 00:55

I hate them! Those poor coyotes (dogs!) lie in horrific agony in big jaw traps for days. Some gnaw their own legs off to try to escape and then die from blood loss. This brand means the person wearing it is a selfish cruel shallow vapid c-word. No exceptions. I judge and judge hard.
