Love - silk shirts with a blazer and fitted trousers/jeans. Brogues or block heels. Really dainty jewellery.

Loathe - 50s look (unless it actually is from the 50s), Irregular Choice shoes etc.

I hate the revived 90s look that is so fashionable with young women at the moment. Also those weird unflattering jeans they wear that are too wide, too short and don't have any particular shape or style to them. Also in the interests of equality, the skater/gangster look on young men where their trouser hang down so their underpants show. And I hate all tattoos.

Love athleisure and anything that looks feminine without looking/being uncomfortable. Also have a thing about tall men in suits and long wool/cashmere coats.

friendlyflicka · 14/02/2021 19:19

I have a very expensive thing about cashmere coats in general...

DrinkSnackRepeat · 14/02/2021 19:47

I hate what I call the Phase 8/ Queen Mum look. I have a couple of relatives who think they are dressed really well and all their clothes are from Phase 8. They actually look like they are always going to a cheapo wedding. They also always wear full makeup, earrings, necklace, rings, and a bracelet. They have loads of matching handbags. They wear square heels.

I fucking hate this look. They look down their noses at me because I don't dress the same.

The look I love the most - a bit of boho. When I was a teen, my friend's cousin just oozed chic. The other day I saw my friend had her on her FB and I stalked her page. At 50+ she was still oozed cool with her jeans, shirts, waistcoats, and hats. I feel vastly inferior.

GinIsNotOriginal · 14/02/2021 21:46

I love thick tights with trainers and a nice skirt! I saw a girl The other day wearing black converse, what must have been 200 denier tights and a leopard print mini with a lovely coat. She looked fab!

I hate the ‘retro’ 1950s look with painfully tight corsets too

BarbaraofKent · 14/02/2021 21:58

I love the 'Louisa from Me Before You' look (that's who best sums it up for me!) as in polka dots, prints, skater skirts, pinafore dresses, fur coats, colour etc. I love a heart print dress or polka dot anything!

I don't like 'Parisian/preppy chic' as I think it's very dull and also, I am short and a little bit chubby and it just looks ridiculous on me. I'm also not a fan of the 50s look unless it goes all the way and is done authentically iyswim? Just a circle dress and red lipstick doesn't cut the mustard and looks very contrived.

BarbaraofKent · 14/02/2021 22:00

I also hate the 'Ted Baker occasion' look - go to any wedding in Ireland (and I have been to a lot!) and you will know what I mean!

I would add that I know that a lot of people think my dress sense is shit and that they wouldn't be caught dead in some of the stuff I wear, so each to their own!

TroyTown · 15/02/2021 20:54

Loathe: anything body con or anything that looks cheap, ‘try hard’ sexy or synthetic

Love: tailored blazer and good jeans, military style overcoats, leather, cashmere, tonal dressing

Ponoka7 · 16/02/2021 11:06

I'm in my 50's. The only thing I'm desperate for is comfortable feet. I'm hands on with my young grandchildren and walk a lot, so one colour jersey maxi dresses, floaty kaftans and coloured trainers/sketchers are my go to for summer.i also wear dressy dresses with DMs/Timberland. It's only as I've got older I've realised how girls and women are often hampered by their clothing.

I don't like constant monochrome and parisian chic. I've been on holiday in North Africa a few times and when younger french women ditch it and put colour on (they bought tunics and shift dresses from local markets) they looked so much happier. Young people should have fun with fashion. Princess Beatrice and Eugenie wear fun stuff that they like.

I like seasonal colours. Jewel colours over winter, especially coats and bright shades, tropical prints in summer.

Ponoka7 · 16/02/2021 11:13

I also like make up, some is a but heavy for day wear, but each to their own. I wear seasonal nail colours and jewellery.

Cornetttttto · 16/02/2021 15:21

I hate instagram makeup, you know - full coverage and brows and lips done up like a Bratz doll. I hate Boohoo and the shite they enable people to buy off the backs of underpaid people in faraway places. I hate that the 90s are back, they were shit the first time round. I do love a nice pair of jeans, sturdy boots and a plain but goof quality jumper paired with a big coat. Androgynous for the win.

Faith50 · 16/02/2021 15:37

Barbaraofkent I agree Ted Baker occasion wear has a very try hard and stiff look. There are too many 2 in 1 dresses - a top with a skirt illusion but it is actually a dress.

Troytown I like fitted dresses but only in midi length. As a mid 40's, I do not feel right wearing a fitted above knee dress. I believe only young or very thin women can get away with bodycon dresses that show off every lump.

MiniTheMinx · 16/02/2021 17:14

I really dislike what I would describe as classic clothing style, or aspirational styles. I dislike white shirts, blazers, Tods shoes, expensive bags with logos on show, it looks like a uniform. It screams "I want to fit in with people who have more money than me" or "I want you to think I have more money than you" It comes over as lacking in confidence, and a deep need to be accepted, or a lack of creativity.

I like modern edgy goth or nu goth, so no purple, no long black hair, no crosses or other 80s references, certainly no vampire looks. My real pet hate is lace, crushed velvets and shiny fabrics. I like slightly tom boyish looks like skinny black cargo pants or ripped jeans with DM boots. I like mixing vintage with new. Love hats. I will find any excuse to wear a hat. So I might wear really boyish cargo pants and para boots but with a long vintage 20s coat and a floppy 60s hat! I like other people who wear what they like, how they like and with confidence.

Ultimately though, people tend to look better when they are fit, healthy, happy and comfortable whatever style they adopt.

Pigtailsandall · 16/02/2021 19:22

I think I mentioned it before but I hate logos. All logos. On expensive brands its ostentatious; on cheap brands unimaginative.

I like anything quirky. When I met DH he wore a mint green t-shirt bought from a US thrift store which had lots of chickens on it and said "Young farmers - in it for the chicks". Confidence to pull of something unusual is always attractive

Hihellohi · 17/02/2021 01:46

Can I join:

Love:
a slim fitting shirt tucked into slim trousers
A very particular shade of navy rinse wash jeans
Blazer with plain top and jeans and heels (I’m so basic haha)
Any big statement earrings

The preppy jumper/shirt combo
Pencil skirt and blouse combo on other women
Some women look so cool in sports leggings and a sweater
Ruffles!
A good coat
A jumpsuit with good levels of “slouch”
I’ve never been able to carry it off but when women wear a plain white t shirt and casual trousers and look so chic. I look like I’ve just woken up Grin
The chanel tweed suit look - love it.

Loathe:
Floaty dress with clumpy boots and leather jacket
50s look
Converse trainers- too flat
Clumpy trainers
The Ted Baker look referred to above - where they produce clothes only in one print for one season. So unimaginative.

Yes to those wide mom style jeans. Worn with Minnie mouse trainers.

I've notice Alice in Finding Alice goes for this look and it suits her.
I suspect it's a look that only really slim attractive people with can pull off. Long thick hair helps as well. She's all of those things.
The rest of us would likely look like a sack of potatoes with this baggy look.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 17/02/2021 13:27

Love: anyone who dresses for the occasion and their body type.

Loathe: anyone who tries too hard.

LollyLou348 · 21/03/2021 20:22

Definitely love my wipe clean, waterproof skinny jeans from a website called ACAI. Also, an absolute godsend when the kids come at me with mucky hands and I can just wipe my jeans! www.acaioutdoorwear.com

Oversize · 21/03/2021 22:20

Love - anything that makes the woman wearing it feel boosted and confident.
(Except...)
Hate - cold shoulder jumpers. Wtf is the point? You wear a jumper to keep warm so having massive holes in it defeats the object, surely. And purposely ripped jeans - it just seems rotten to pay good money for raggedy clothes you wouldn't put in a charity bag. It seems almost morally wrong to me.

JaceLancs · 21/03/2021 22:50

Love natural fabrics and unfussy patterns and styles
Loathe logos - slogans - band t shirts - anything that has a plain back with contrast front - polyester

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/03/2021 23:20

Love a lazy, insouciant, doesn’t try too hard look - long dress with biker boot type thing. Or just jeans with an old fitted tee. Throw on a battered leather jacket and silver jewellery and I am good to go. Cannot bear the Sloaney pie crust collar look. Or jeans with a blazer.. Or anything with appliqué on the front.. Worst thing I have seen recently is Beyoncé’s new Ivy Park range of clothes for Adidas - a shade of brown that is dubious at best….

Redact · 22/03/2021 08:16

Love clothes in natural fabrics, stylish, well put together looks. Don't like formal looks much prefer a casuaI stylish look. I love jeans, dressed up or down. Good quality clothes and I like what I like iykwim.

I don't like rockabilly, vintage looks or the fake make up look, massive eyebrows, lashes, contouring, orange make up. And the skyscraper heels, micro skirts look. Oh and cold shoulder tops, what's the point. These looks wouldn't suit me at all.

Namechange2790 · 22/03/2021 11:46

Love: jumpers and knitwear! Love a big slouchy cardigan, silk cami, jeans and ballet pump look. Relaxed, casual, understated glam. I like fake tans, fake nails, eyelash extensions and all that. However i loath heavy make up. I’ve seen pictures of before and after make up and it doesn’t even look like the same person. I hate that.
I also hate: DMs. They are hideous and chunky and the sandals look like the type I’d put my toddler in. I dislike midi dresses, I think they are very ageing. I don’t like shirts either.

withlotsoflove · 22/03/2021 12:10

Don’t like anything where the clothes overtake the person...
I don’t like match/y match/y
A lady l know (in her 70’s) coordinates everything
Hair bow
Shoes / tights.
It’s exhausting to look at. She is a very pretty woman & l would love to see her casual.

I like skinnies or flares
Tee / classic & tops
Leather jackets/ bashed up or new.
Ballet flats or sneakers
Silver jewellery
Denim jackets.
Simple long dresses / skirts or mini with tights in the Spring : Autumn: Winter :)
