Love - silk shirts with a blazer and fitted trousers/jeans. Brogues or block heels. Really dainty jewellery.

Loathe - 50s look (unless it actually is from the 50s), Irregular Choice shoes etc.

I love something smart teamed with something almost but not quite scruffy - worn jeans and a silk blouse or an evening dress with an aged biker jacket. I hate wrap dresses and skater skirts.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 03/02/2021 19:59

I also love the 1940s close-fitting top and wide-leg tailored trousers look that Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall used to wear Me too, and have a serious Andrea Martel crush.

Maxi dresses are also awful, as is Kardashian type bodycon.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 03/02/2021 20:00

50s look, like wrap dresses, is often punted as suiting the curvy. It really doesn't.

Sootybear · 03/02/2021 20:03

I wear glasses, and I always notice when people are wearing really interesting glasses that suit their face shape. I love a good pair of glasses. Shoes, I always notice what shoes people are wearing. I'm not a massive fan of trainers, the ones that look like running shoes, when you aren't actually running, they are so ugly. I much prefer trainers that aren't meant actually for sport, like the big clumpy ones. There are a lot of shoes I really dislike.

MindBodyChocolate · 03/02/2021 20:12

I love loads of different looks: classic verging on Parisienne chic, a little bit of rock-chick and elegant, natural fabrics.

The only styles I’m not so keen on is anything super boho or new agey. I just don’t get all the layering, draping and tying bits together Smile. Probably as I’d look like a sack of spuds 🤣

2typesofjungle · 03/02/2021 20:13

I love smart well tailored tshirts tucked in to jeans with converse.

I hate those dreadful Lucy and Yak dungarees, usually teamed with a messy bun on top of the wearers head.

I live in leggings, waterproof trousers and anoraks Confused

TashieWoo · 03/02/2021 20:28

I love the slightly messy 60s look - less Audrey Hepburn (dull) but more Bridgette Bardot (sexy) - big blonde hair and lived in black eyeliner. Also like Frances Kray’s look in Legend, her outfits are amazing.

Also like Debbie Harry’s 70s look - blonde again and she has a fantastic face.

Currently I like a classic look - good quality basics in neutral colours, but paired with more interesting jewellery, good nails, hair and makeup. Special accessories.

I can’t bear the quirky vintage look e.g. angel strawbridge, so try hard and pretentious. I also don’t like cold shoulder tops and naff thong sandals.

Elsabet · 03/02/2021 20:40

Loathe - thick black tights and white trainers, it’s a popular look in my office?!
Love - people comfortable in their own body and wear clothes to suit.

lighteincastlewindow · 03/02/2021 22:21

brogues and turtlenecks and camel coats.

Oh and those teddy coats.

OrangutanLibrarianGivesAnOok · 03/02/2021 22:36

I hate trainers, they will never look good on anyone.

HerselfIndoors · 03/02/2021 22:56

Love - summery print dress or jumpsuit, with chunky sandals, painted toenails and funky shades. Trainers also works, but I like to show off bright toenails.

Hate - "classic" style like a white shirt (always referred to as a "crisp" white shirt in magazines!), camel trench and pencil skirt or tailored trousers. I feel stuffy just looking at it. Also skirt suits with tight fitted blazers.

StillMedusa · 03/02/2021 23:14

Love.. hareem pants..proper 'saggy nappy' cotton hippy ones with a loose t shirt or linen shirt, or loose linen trousers and a long natural coloured hair plait... in summer. And the Slim jeans, breton top (hated by another poster ) in winter.. with ariat leather wellies and a dog!

Hate.. white trainers ..with anything, but especially black tights and floaty dresses. Also anything leopard print! Oh and Maxi dresses...I'm sure there are a few women who look fabulous, but most look like they are wearing tents and they make the best bust look saggy!

Obviously I am highy fashionable...not.. eyes jeans and dog walking coat.. Grin

VanillaAndOrange · 04/02/2021 10:35

Love: longish full skirts with a short, fitted or batwing top half.

Hate: mismatches of warmness, eg a summery dress with thick opaque tights and heavy boots, or a big padded coat with bare legs and ballet flats.

Triffid1 · 04/02/2021 10:48

Love (on other people, sadly not me): tucked in shirt or top with slim fitting trousers.
Love on me (in summer): ankle skimming trousers with some kind of top/shirt that flatters the waist. Always makes me full more pulled together.

Hate: leggings worn as trousers. As far as I'm concerned leggings are worn under very long tops/dresses only. They do not work as standalone trousers. They are not flattering on most people, even people with gorgeous figures and there is no need to go out wearing what is basically underwear. [and yes, I'm fully aware that for some people wearing leggings is a choice because they're comfortable and their attitude is that they don't have to "hide" OR "show off" their body.I'm also aware that for others, they see leggings as an opportunity to highlight their body and that is their right. I just don't think either of this things should be done via the choice of leggings.]

MacDuffsMuff · 04/02/2021 11:06

This a hundred times over! Grin

I've always loved the slightly hippie/boho look - like Linda Cardellini in Dead to me. Never been able to pull that off myself though.

Hate hate hate the over-madeup pink/tight/bunny ears/playboy/glitter/fluffy look that's prevalent on SM. It's just shite.

Spodge · 04/02/2021 17:30

I love bright colours and figure skimming (rather than hugging) clothing (on the right figure for the clothing).

I hate cold shoulder styles.

Craftycorvid · 04/02/2021 22:31

Disclaimer: reasons for loving/loathing here based on how these look on me. On other women, my ‘loathed’ has been a look I’ve admired.

Love: hippy art teacher look aspiring to be Helena Bonham Carter, with lots of vintagey bits, trainers (old school ones), Doc Martens, a bit of fake fur and dungas.

Loathe: anything ‘smart’ or businessy or very ladylike ages me instantly. I look like someone’s disapproving great aunt the moment I don anything resembling a formal outfit.

funtimefrank · 04/02/2021 22:44

Love: the Katherine Hepburn look up thread; the cool architect structured Cos type look with a curated earring, the curvy Vivienne Westwood/nigella like glam adult look (where appropriate- not in Tesco or anything).

Only one of these would ever possibly every suit me and as the most glamorous thing I do is go to tesco, and I'd need an industrial amount of help to rock it even if I did go anywhere glam, these all remain fantasy

Loathe: the stuff I wear ie badly fitting Hush rip off type stuff that never quite looks right. Skinny jeans as that make me worry people will get thrush and be all itchy (don't ask). Cold shoulder tops and ripped jeans. The thick artificial eyebrow and big lip thing. My fondness for novelty items like Harry Potter t shirts and dog print socks which I think will make me look funky/quirky but actually make me look like a dick. 'Crisp white shirts' - these suit very few people I think because a fair number don't actually suit white and they look too stiff.

Toilenstripes · 04/02/2021 23:54

Love 90s fashion the way Carolyn Bessette (Kennedy) wore it.

Loathe 1950s, Rockabilly, Angela Strawbridge style

Nat6999 · 05/02/2021 00:23

I've been looking at old photos with my mum & ds today, the pictures of my Nan during the war & afterwards. She looked so elegant in the clothes of the time & then a photo of my mum at my brother's christening in 1972 wearing a mini dress she had made herself & pictures of her in the 1950's when she first met my dad. She used to go to the dressmaker for most of her clothes, she had things that look just like they had come off the catwalk, yet she wasn't that well off, we have in some ways lost our way in how we dress, how often do we really make an effort & get dressed up or wear anything other than the first thing we find in the wardrobe?

Jollygoodtime · 05/02/2021 04:22

My likes and dislikes are exactly the same as TashieWoo’s Smile

blisstwins · 05/02/2021 05:09

@BreakfastOfWaffles

I love a plain polo neck with a statement necklace. I don't "loathe" any outfits really. Most things can look good on the right person - there are definitely looks that I can't carry off/don't really know how to style. Dungerees would be one!
This is exactly the look I love. The look I loathe are cold should tops, but I don't judge people wearing them. I just wish the style would disappear.
RacheyCat · 05/02/2021 08:35

I don't love the skinny jeans/Breton top/converse (or similar) look, or the 1950's cartoonish look, or stiletto heels with short skirts look.

I love tonal dressing. The all beige/cream/brown look, and also the health goth look, with all-black athleisure.

CrotchBurn · 05/02/2021 09:36

Love: female take on kurt Cobain. The main actress in Call My Agent. 70s rocky look.

Loathe: sportswear. Agreed with so many on here: the 50s look often has a faint whiff of hysteria about it. I hate lipstick on everyone. I hate the posh mum look: expensive highlights and a parka that looks too clean. Anything that looks grungy worn by a person who clearly isnt grungy at heart (you can tell by the immaculate brows and makeup)
