One look that you love and one that you loathe

Love - silk shirts with a blazer and fitted trousers/jeans. Brogues or block heels. Really dainty jewellery.

Loathe - 50s look (unless it actually is from the 50s), Irregular Choice shoes etc.

I love the scruffy grungy look. Oversized checked shirts, messy hair, scuffed boots and smudged make up. I also love the bohemian look but its not practical for my lifestyle and I can't pull it off as I have a toddler and not confident I would look rock chic/carefree hippy rather then panicked mother whose child is caught up in the many layers of her clothes!

I don't quite understand mom jeans. I like them but cannot get a pair that makes me look the way they look on everyone else! And excessive make up makes me jealous of the skills used to apply it!

But the things I suppose I hate are cycling shorts with a matching oversized jumper as a fashionable look. And when girls have really really long hair extensions as it just looks like a lot of effort to maintain!

Love: Japanese style fashion (not sure if that is the right term) - pinafores, baggy trousers, structured tops, chunky jewellery. Brogues or chunky sandals/birkies with socks.

Loathe: leopard skin and leather trousers.

ExConstance · 10/02/2021 15:20

Loathe - Blazers or an;y sort of formal jacket with smart trousers and mum boots

Love - faded T shirt and full skirt, cropped denim jacket (vegan so don't do leather) lace up boots with small heel. Cashmere and handkinits.

Picassosdove · 11/02/2021 11:09

I disagree strongly that trainers and skirts or dresses on older women look 'desperate'

Desperate to get a man or desperate to be seen as trendy?

It's a look which is relatively current, imo attractive and is extremely comfortable. So why ever not?

ShyAmy333 · 11/02/2021 12:08

Well I'm 61 and it's a look I like

thebabessavedme · 11/02/2021 12:23

I'm 58 and I will wear whatever the fuck I like, I'm not 'desperate' for anything!

thebabessavedme · 11/02/2021 12:25

well, actually thats not strictly true, I am becoming desperate for a pair of open toed snakeskin boots that I have spotted in the All Saints sale. Grin

LunaNorth · 11/02/2021 20:52

Isn’t ‘desperate’ the most horrible way to describe someone.

So sneery and nasty.

Rathmobhaile · 11/02/2021 21:21

Love - doc martens, skater skirts, greys and blacks (I struggle in summer), biker jackets, chiffony floral knee length dresses but with chunky boots.

Loathe - skinny jeans and stilletos, mom jeans, bodycon dresses.

This is stuff on me - on other people they can dress as they love. Most of all I love to see someone have their own take on how to dress - even if its not for me I admire them for having their own take on something rather than just following fashion.

I do love the look of floral dresses, denim jackets and trainers. But then I saw pictures of my neices last year (pre-covid) at a birthday party. 12 year olds dressed in that outfit have managed to place it firmly in my head as a tweenie outfit. Thats how I would feel wearing it but actually isn't what I think when I see women wearing that combo.

TheySeeHerRowling · 11/02/2021 21:40

I was swooning over Jenna Coleman's 70s white linen trouser suit with deep wine silk shirt on The Serpent the other day.

I will never swoon over athleisure.

TheVampiresWife · 11/02/2021 21:58

My username is a bit of a clue as to a look that I love! Angelica Houston as Morticia, Florence Welch, fitted prairie dresses in velvet and satin in jewel tones, Victorian jewellery, vintage leather doctor's bags, long centre parted hair. I tone it down a bit with chunky boots for daytime. Nicole Kidman in The Undoing, that's another one. That green coat was beautiful.

Not so keen on 50s rockabilly/pin up stuff, unless it's the genuine article. It can look a bit like a costume, particularly if everything is hyper coordinated - matching polka dot dress and bandana tied around the neck, for example. And one of those big petticoats. Always puts me in mind of a Eurovision Song Contest entrant. So many of those dresses have 'zany' patterns too - kittens in teacups or hedgehogs on pushbikes. Actually anything wacky gives me the ugh. Quacker Factory on QVC. And yy to the poster who has an aversion to chunky necklace/artfully arranged scarf combos.

JC looked fabulous in The Serpent! Her sunglasses collection was super swoon inducing.
Bloodylovecheese · 11/02/2021 22:19

Face wise..I love a fine flick of eyeliner and red lips with a dewy face (not shiny)
I really dislike caked on foundation and contouring so much, you could scratch a nail down and scoop it off with one swipe.

Kintsugi16 · 12/02/2021 04:21

Love: slouchy jumpers, messy hair, natural fabrics, hats, fur, muted shades and I always have to wear something that’s a bit ‘off’ iyswim

Hate: too much makeup, too much jewellery, spidery lashes, nail art or neon nails, bright colour with black and anything high fashion really

Kintsugi16 · 12/02/2021 04:21

Oh - and I hate striped Breton tops!

IsThePopeCatholic · 12/02/2021 22:04

Loathe: heels with trousers or jeans.
Love: clumpy shoes or boots with dresses or trousers.

TeaAddict235 · 14/02/2021 09:03

@Katiepoes I see the Scarlett o'hara look mainly with church mums, when I bump into them midweek they look very prim, clean and 1950s

TeaAddict235 · 14/02/2021 09:06

And 1940s oops

shivermetimbers77 · 14/02/2021 09:38

Love: French ‘Andrea from Call My Agent’ chic- but don’t know if I could ever look that pulled together.

Loathe : Kardashian fakeness: over filled, identikit faces, ridiculous eyebrows and overly tight clothes.

@Zenithbear

Racheycat The whole look not just the bits you picked out to be offended by. Paleness or no tits or thinness or scruffy hair does not on it's own. In fact I have 3 out of 4 lol. It's just the Whole look I personally IMHO don't like.
Baffled that you thought I was offended (Unless... do you actually know me?. Even included an emoji. Anyway, I totally deny all accusations of scruffiness. They're LIES.
friendlyflicka · 14/02/2021 17:53

Really don't like Vampire's Wife layered long dresses or Cabbages and Rose's Little House on the Prairie buttoned up look. Also those droopy Brora dresses and a lot of stuff from Toast. Also find Cos quite difficult.

I love slacks. No other word for them, slim and cropped with flat shoes and a wide jumper. And love 1950s shape coats with dropped shoulders.

As I am small and short, the styles I love suit me, and the styles I can't quite comprehend, swamp me.

friendlyflicka · 14/02/2021 18:04

I really do not understand the popularity of a lot of styles. I think that is the problem. I have seen them the first time round and groan when they come out again - that is mainly big layered dresses, and tie dye. Very much identifiable with an era.
