What little things elevate your look??

Looking to steal some ideas!

Little things I notice that I think kick my outfit up a notch:

-rolling up cuffs or pulling sleeves up slightly
-the 'French tuck' thing where you partially tuck in your top
-leaving a little bit of ankle showing when wearing skinny/ slim jeans and boots

Stud earrings and a silk scarf

VanillaAndOrange · 20/01/2021 10:23

Red lipstick (or a brightish pink or coral if red really wouldn't go with an outfit)

Hair up and interesting drop earrings

Clothes that follow the "golden ratio" (ie quite high-waisted, or belted at the high waist)

Medium heeled, not too round toed shoes and boots (can't do this when I have to walk to work!)

A good quality bag

Uptonogoodtoo · 20/01/2021 10:55

What is the ‘golden ratio’?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 20/01/2021 11:41

@Uptonogoodtoo

What is the ‘golden ratio’?
It's a way of working out your proportions so that you are visually divided according to the golden ratio (1:1.618), which is supposed to be the most pleasing as it's found a lot in nature. In practice it means dividing measurements on your body by this number and accentuating that point. So to find the best skirt/dress length, measure from your shoulders to your shoe heel and divide by 1.618 and the skirt should be that length from your shoulders. To find where to emphasise your middle, use the same number but measuring upwards from your shoe heel and that's where your skirt/trousers waistband should sit, or a belt.

It might sound a bit OTT or silly, but picture doing the same measurement (shoulder to heel) and dividing by 2 (ratio 1:1, so you're wearing a belt at 50% of the way up your body or your jeans hit there). It would look weird wouldn't it?

Lots of the things on here but also I've started using Opalescence toothpaste and it's a game changer.

I've always had sensitive teeth so struggle to find something that will remove all the stains (tea/coffee/red wine) and this has been amazing.

No sensitivity and fabulously clean white teeth.

Brushing eyebrows up and doing soap brows - totally frames your face and makes such a difference :)

Yep, I do exactly these too. I find those 'How to style jeans with sweaters/boots/jackets/whatever' pages on Pinterest really useful.

I also like a Shellac manicure in a vivid colour, like a deep teal green, or midnight blue. Pastel shades are so bland.

NomadNoMore · 20/01/2021 21:53

@missabc15 what are soap brows?

missabc15 · 20/01/2021 22:01

@NomadNoMore it’s when you take a spoolie brush, wet it then rub it on clear soap (Pear’s is best) and brush your eyebrows up the way. It basically gives you eyebrows that are lovely and full and fluffy looking, like being laminated, at next to no cost! Hope that helps xx

peaceanddove · 20/01/2021 22:05

I yearn to wear red lipstick, but invariably look like a man in drag. Bizarre because my features are quite dainty and symmetrical, yet the second I attempt red lipstick I look like a builder.

Where am I going wrong? Hair is mousey/ashy blonde, eyes are blue/grey and skin tone is neutral. How hard can it be?

NomadNoMore · 20/01/2021 22:06

Thanks, I'll give it a try!

VanillaAndOrange · 21/01/2021 10:27

That's technically right, but in practice 2/3 to 1/3 is about right too. For me it means higher waisted skirts and trousers and/or shorter tops and cardigans. My legs look a lot longer when I do this, and that's not a bad thing in my case!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/01/2021 10:43

I think in terms of elevating our look, how stunning did Michelle Obama look at the inauguration yesterday?

One colour, different textures and cut to perfection. Actually very simple in theory when you've got designers queuing up to dress you Grin.--

What an incredibly stylish woman she is. I've totally got a crush on her.

limesoda · 21/01/2021 12:11

The proportions thing is amazing, for me, high-waisted jeans with a top tucked in looks infinitely more put together than the same top with midrise jeans. Obviously I'm not in a position to rush out and buy new everything, but it is helping me think about what works at the minute.

Anyone looking for red lipstick, lisa elridge velvet ribbon seems to suit most tones the best. I adore it.

Yes! Indeed. Stunning 😍

A fun nail colour to match the season / your outfit. I've got a silvery grey going on right now.
Are you rocking a silver grey nail?

Red lipstick.

Nonamesavail · 21/01/2021 12:44

No French tuck for me I have a big tummy! Despite being quite petite. My stomach isnnot!

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 12:58

Light make up, earrings in a tone which suits me, dry shampoo on not squeaky clean hair.

carlaCox · 21/01/2021 13:05

Yeah just the one though. I think painting all 10 can look a bit try hard. Grin

Heels. My every days are 4 inches and I can do everything in them. If I want a more casual look I switch stilettos for thicker heels or heeled boots. But they instantly make me look slimmer, taller and more put together.

Tomasinabombadil · 23/01/2021 18:08

@RavingAnnie

Oh my god. My look is elevated by me actually being bothered to wash, put clothes on and wash my hair at the moment. Hopefully these tips are helpful to you. 😂
Me too😂
