What little things elevate your look??

Looking to steal some ideas!

Little things I notice that I think kick my outfit up a notch:

-rolling up cuffs or pulling sleeves up slightly
-the 'French tuck' thing where you partially tuck in your top
-leaving a little bit of ankle showing when wearing skinny/ slim jeans and boots

the 'French tuck' thing where you partially tuck in your top
I haven't seen anyone IRL do this and not look like they've accidently tucked in some of their jumper after a pee.

leaving a little bit of ankle showing when wearing skinny/ slim jeans and boots
Only with boyfriend jeans. My legs aren't long and don't need to be made to look shorter.

MiddleOfThePack · 15/01/2021 13:43

French tuck confuses me. I'm tall and slim but it just looks silly on me.

Always 'do' my fringe. Even if I have my hair tied back, it instantly looks like I made an effort. Same reason for sleeping with hoop earrings in.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 15/01/2021 14:02

If the top is short enough (like a normal t-shirt) it looks better to tuck it in all the way (but not too tightly, pull it back out a bit). Not for everyone, but for those who suit a French tuck with a longer top like a shirt or blouse or jumper.

I look very un-"done" without enough jewellery. (Others will look better with none!)

Agree with rolling up sleeves (IF it suits you). Same with trouser length - depends on leg length and proportions. You have to figure out what looks best on you.

Ultimately it's about making what you're wearing look more intentional rather than like you just chucked on your clothes and didn't look in the mirror.

I'm with you lol
I'm only on this thread as I saw it trending and agree Grin
Wash, clean clothes and brushed my hair I'm seriously winning.
Now trying to get my head round blusher dupes, wearing a blazer (!) (for work? Or just fancy casual everyday?) and strong lips[/quote]
Lol! I'm wondering whether a "french tuck" will do anything to zhuzh up my day pyjamas (you know the ones you change into when transitioning from night pyjamas) 😁

Might brush my hair today. Treat myself!

RavingAnnie · 15/01/2021 15:59

@ShaunaTheSheep

Idea stolen from elsewhere - sellotaping over your camera for a flattering filter.

Good lighting

Warm slippers.

I have been working from home too long!

I find that works really well with gaffa tape. Can't see you at all then. Very flattering! 😬
MadameButterface · 15/01/2021 16:04

tinting your own eyebrows (and eyelashes if you're brave enough) is a piece of piss and makes you look 'done'

snip trailing threads off, poke pulls in knitted garments through to the wrong side, alter trousers and sleeves so they hit just right, debobble bobbly things, keep shoes looked after, lint roller yourself.

Hollybutnoivy · 15/01/2021 16:05

Red lipstick. I've various shades /tones and wear a lip balm under so it is still pretty sheer but does seem to make a big difference.

Agreed but no-one really sees it behind the mask anyway! My top tip is to actually look in the mirror before leaving the house - obvious but I never used to do it and a quick tweak in front of the mirror really helps. I'm interested in they eyelash thing - I have one eye bigger than the other and when I manage to curl the smaller eye's eyelashes, it really looks better.

BrassicaBabe · 15/01/2021 16:27

These days? Dry shampoo and dangly earrings 🤦🏻‍♀️

SoDiorDarling · 15/01/2021 16:51

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping love your name too! And great advise - give a shit and it shows.

For me it's having my eyebrows and nails done once a fortnight (obviously not during the 3 lockdowns).
I get my eyebrows waxed which makes them look so much better. In the lockdowns I've been plucking stray hairs and pretending I know what I'm actually doing with them (I don't at all). End up ruining the perfect shape my amazing lady finally helped me achieve.
And I get my acrylic nails done. I know most people on here especially hate them, and they hate long ones even more. But I love them. For me they have to be long, about an inch from the free edge, or the end of my finger. When I get a new set applied I don't get the tips cut at all, and every infill I never get the length shortened, so they get longer as they grow. And always nice colours with designs and glitter. During the lockdowns I just leave them on. They obviously grow out but they last without breaking and have minimal lifting. (They lasted 15-16 weeks in the 1st one. 6 weeks in the 2nd one. And hopefully as long as possible this time). For me the longer the better so I love them. I'm not me without them.
Straightening my hair also helps.

Every time I try the French tuck I feel daft. It’s a shame as I have a few shirts that would work with it.

slipperyeel · 15/01/2021 21:10

I always misread French tuck as French fuck. Sounds much more fun.

FourTurnings · 15/01/2021 21:11

I dunno, I could feel daft with that too 😀

nuitdesetoiles · 15/01/2021 21:11

I love the idea of white shirts casually tucked in, but unfortunately they don't suit me, nothing with a collar does. I look like summer kind of Jane Austen/ librarian cross...

nuitdesetoiles · 15/01/2021 21:12

*some

dudsville · 15/01/2021 21:21

My shape favors a fully tucked in top so that will be my contribution. Having been young in the grundge era I struggle, but I had just enough 80s influence to be able to work with it. I feel so damn fancy doing it though.

LunaTheCat · 16/01/2021 04:23

Red lipstick, a scarf - wool winter, cotton or linen in summer.
Fine jewellery.
Classic shoes - birkies in summer, Allbirds in winter
A red velvet coat which is from the 50’s and cost me pennies 20 years ago - it cost more to re-line it!

Everyone who does a French tuck looks like they have been Styled By Susie Grin
Coffeepot72 · 16/01/2021 08:16

I know you can’t see it, but perfume makes me feel polished/done

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 16/01/2021 08:28

I can't quite get my head around the 'French tuck ' I inwardly laugh if I see it now as it seems so contrived.
I don't know if that's just because it doesn't work on me and I look unkempt.

FreeFallingFree · 16/01/2021 08:56

The French tuck doesn't work for me either, but I guess the thread is about what people think lifts their personal look rather than what works for everyone. It's interesting because the answers have tended to fall into one of two camps, things which add polish, and things which add casualness.

So the person who backcombed to tousle their hair made me smile because I have curly hair and never need extra tousling. To elevate my look I have to make sure I have curl definition rather than frizz, which requires a fair amount of time and product or 5 minutes in drizzle.

Shaped dyed eyebrows give my face more definition, and while I hate the phrase 'a pop of colour' I receive positive comments when I add a bright accessory.

IsolaPribby · 16/01/2021 08:56

I roll my sleeves up to do the washing up. Does that count?

doadeer · 16/01/2021 09:09

I always French tuck it just looks normal for me... I always wear high waisted jeans so I want to draw attention to my waist.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/01/2021 09:17

There's a French lady called Justine Leconte on YouTube who does videos on different tucking techniques according to body type and fabrics. Lots of other good ones too. Think she's a designer. May be worth a look.

I still look like I've forgotten to tuck in properly after the loo mind Grin

natalienewname · 16/01/2021 11:07

Bah, I love a French tuck. It suits my shape and style, and most of the time a proper tuck turns into a French within 5 mins anyway.

Other suggestions that work for me:

  • leather jacket
  • slither of ankle between boot and trousers
  • red lipstick
  • decent coat
  • hat
