Are there any perfumes you absolutely hate?

Just that really.
Reason for asking, I ordered blind ( stupid I know) a Liz Earle perfume. Even wanting to try them, no chance of testing at the moment, so picked one that loads of reviews said was gorgeous, favourite perfume, ever, signature scent, always getting stopped & asked what it was etc. The description sounded ok. It came & I hate it, it actually makes me feel sick when I smell it, couldn’t wait to scrub it off. It’s so persistent though!

Clinique Aromatics, an ex used to wear it ages ago, I never had the guts then to say I hated it .
I wear Angel and Tom Ford Velvet Orchid, maybe people hate the smell of me Smile

VinylDetective · 16/12/2020 09:30

Poison. And I was nearly sick on my shoes when I smelt Bandit.

DollyBantry · 16/12/2020 09:32

Calvin Klein Eternity. Was wildly popular when I was a teen and it gave me instant headache and nausea. Vile.

Rainbowandscarlett · 16/12/2020 09:35

Eden-it was so strong and it lingered-I stank like a rotting hippy

4711-my mother swore it was the nicest perfume she’d ever smelt so I bought some blind-I stank like the dentists

The beckhams did one (can’t remember which one) and it smelt like a really odd toilet cleaner

Sunflowers-didn’t smell of anything on me

Sarah Jessica Parker’s ‘lovely’ smelt just like cat pee then faded to nothing

My mate used to wear alien but it’s so wrong-so heavy-it gave me a headache

bruffin · 16/12/2020 09:39

Chanel No5

CrochetToTheMoon · 16/12/2020 09:40

Angel. Smells like a hamster cage

Justcashnosweets · 16/12/2020 09:42

Alien, Angel and Chanel No 5. The first two because they are so sickly sweet, and Chanel because I find it really overpowering.

unicornpower · 16/12/2020 10:03

Ha oh i love Alien! i wear it loads! maybe people hate how i smell haha. I don't like Chanel no 5 or The original Ghost in the weird shaped bottle.

Jean Paul Gaultier is wayyy too strong for me to.

I do like some Jo Malone but i do think its way too overpriced for what it is, seems to fade really quickly.

Hellofayearsofar · 16/12/2020 10:06

Angel, Clinique Wrappings from the 1990s and Lancôme Tresor. I love most perfumes but these three are something else Sad

CherylStreep · 16/12/2020 10:11

Daisy and CK One smell like sickly, cheap airspray. Chloe turns my stomach.
JM Lime Basil smells lovely on others but like gone off basil on me. Pomegranate Noir too strong.

ProudAuntie76 · 16/12/2020 10:29

I love lots of perfumes but Alien and Angel make me feel so sick. I had a friend in my 20s who was obsessed with both of them and used to spray them every time we’d go to the loo when we were out and offer us all a spray and she reeked of it all the time. We drifted apart and it sounds ridiculous but it’s a relief that I don’t have to endure Angel or Alien as much as I used to - they both stink and give me a headache and nausea. I remember trying the tester for Alien in a perfume shop when it first came out and going really woozy. There must be something in it which makes some of us feel really ill around it.

I’m not great in Yankee Candle shops either and anything too coconutty or vanilla scented makes me feel nauseous and I get an overpowering headache. That being said, I’m not one of these people who believes no one should wear nice perfume and I do enjoy smelling it on others generally. Even though I can have quite strong reactions, I think the world would be an infinitely duller place without perfumes and lovely fragrances!

sheslittlebutfierce · 16/12/2020 10:34

Sunflowers just always smells like dead flowers to me and I cant abide anything too flowery.

woodhill · 16/12/2020 10:52

@Buzzthedragon

Youth dew is a really strange one. I loved the story behind youth dew, and the tester in the shop was incredible... something like oriental spices and hints of Christmas pudding. Kind of festive and luxurious. But good gracious when I got it home! Disgusting. Powdery florally hideousness. Felt totally duped Confused . It’s long lasting though. You can not get rid of that smell once it’s on you 🤢
Grandmother bought it for me when I was 18, just yuck. She liked Elizabeth Arden blue grass as well.

Didn't like Le Jardin Noir either

HerselfIndoors · 16/12/2020 12:12

I've remembered another bad experience, testing a Diesel perfume in a shop - can't remember its name but it was ages ago. I sprayed it on myself and I smelt like an unwashed man who'd spent the night getting totally ratarsed, then slept in the gutter and weed himself. (And I'm not even a man)

I was out for the day shopping and I had to smell like that all day Angry

caperplips · 16/12/2020 12:30

I dislike most of the perfumes named on here too. I'm really not a fan of big, in your face, loud perfumes and I know someone who appears to bathe in Portrait of a Lady and it stinks! It really reminds me of the likes of Poison in the 80's. It's so brash. The last time I saw her she was reeking of it and someone else commented on it, so she whipped it out and started spraying more!! I practically had a migraine after spending an hour in her company. I suspected the price tag was the main allure for her though..

Once I was in a very small exclusive boutique and they had a small array of perfumes, the shop smelt incredible so I tried a little spray on my wrist of one of them. Started off ok but it settled down to the most awful penetrating 'high pitched' smell. That's the only way I can describe it - like the perfume was shrieking. It felt like it was burning the back of my nose and I could not rid of the smell. I washed my hands and wrist but it was indelible!

In the end i had to actually get my coat dry cleaned as I could not bear the smell from the sleeve and it was not fading! It was the worst perfume I ever had the misfortune to encounter

Was it fuel for life? I loved it but my ex used to complain that it made me smell dirty.
Are there any perfumes you absolutely hate?
ichundich · 16/12/2020 12:41

Nearly all of them. I end up feeling nauseated walking through the perfume shops in department stores and at the airport. Much prefer people just smelling clean!

VinylDetective · 16/12/2020 12:48

Portrait of a Lady is beautiful @caperplips.

TheSilentStars · 16/12/2020 12:52

The only ones I've ever felt "why would anyone, ever want to smell like that" are Tresor by Lancome, Narcisse by Chloe and Peoneve by, iirc, Penhaligons. It smelled like dirty nappies.
Others I don't like, but only these have made me euwwwww.

madcatladyforever · 16/12/2020 12:53

Poison......vile.

TheSilentStars · 16/12/2020 12:54

Although anything with an oud note is a bit armpitty. And my colleague wears a terrible expensive niche one with hefty cumin notes and smells like my famed curry but I could never tell her.

Are you sure it was POAL? It's a fairly delicate rose? To be honest, I find it a bit Emperor's New Clothes because it's nothing special, but I wouldn't term it brash at all.
IndieRo · 16/12/2020 12:56

Miracle by Lancome
Eden
Victoria's Secret
Million for men
Jean Paul Gaultier
Cool Water

emilybrontescorsett · 16/12/2020 12:57

I also don’t like any of the old Dior ones, the ones that start Dior something . I dislike Eden too. Cannot believe they have tried to revive Brut for men, that and old spice smell revolting.
I do like Dior Savauge though.

2LittleSpeckledFrogs · 16/12/2020 12:59

Brut. I hate it.
