Are there any perfumes you absolutely hate?

Just that really.
Reason for asking, I ordered blind ( stupid I know) a Liz Earle perfume. Even wanting to try them, no chance of testing at the moment, so picked one that loads of reviews said was gorgeous, favourite perfume, ever, signature scent, always getting stopped & asked what it was etc. The description sounded ok. It came & I hate it, it actually makes me feel sick when I smell it, couldn’t wait to scrub it off. It’s so persistent though!

I dislike most perfumes lately. I never used to but now, anyone wearing enough perfume for me to smell it (which is thankfully rare these days with not getting close to anyone) irritates me.

Being stuck in a meeting with someone wearing a lot of perfume can make me feel positively unwell.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 16/12/2020 07:36

@SpeckledyHen no, not an Elizabeth. How funny would it have been if you'd known her

Deathraystare · 16/12/2020 07:37

All the Calvin Klein ones but in particular - Obsession. Coopers fly spray is the original and cheaper!!!!!

Revlon used to do a couple - Intimate and one called Moondrops. Both very shouty and cat pissy. Lentheric's Tweed as well.

Also all the celeb sugary sweet - "Diabetes here I come" scents for women that like to pretend they are four years old and do not lke decent perfume!

SpeckledyHen · 16/12/2020 07:38

Letsnot Stranger things have happened :)

Deathraystare · 16/12/2020 07:40

Funnily enough I love the Liz Earle scents though I gave number 20 away to a friend but I think the one you mentioned is no.15 which I love!!!!

Presumably you bought it in a store. If you had bought via QVC you could have sent it back!

Marmite27 · 16/12/2020 07:41

@Woahisme

Actually, I just googled (should have done this before really). It was Ghost Deep Night. Absolutely minging.
God I’d forgotten about that one! It was in a dark moon shaped bottle. Horrible stuff.

DH bought me the red moon shaped bottle and all I can smell is curry! Luckily it smells nice on the kids and they live a bit of ‘moon squirt’ it’s lasting bloody ages though, despite my best efforts!

Another one was an Ange au Demon special edition. The original is lovely, but the special was horrible. I sneakily ‘left’ that one behind in a hotel room Grin

PetitsGateaux · 16/12/2020 07:43

I really dislike very floral scents such as J’adore, especially if there’s tuberose or ylang ylang in the mix.

I don’t mind having one floral note (two at a push) in a perfume, but I draw the line there!

Bluntness100 · 16/12/2020 07:44

I tend not to really dislike the smell of perfume on others, nothing significant, except anything that smells of roses, I just don’t like it on anyone as a perfume.

On me though, also anything heavy and too powerful. Like Alien, angel, poison etc, I much prefer the softer, powdery, vanilla type scents.

Suzi888 · 16/12/2020 07:46

Angel, Alien, Joop and anything by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Atrixie · 16/12/2020 07:48

Clarinet eau dynissimante is the most horrible smelt. It makes me feel instantly sick

UseOfWeapons · 16/12/2020 07:56

Most perfumes and strong smells make me wheeze and eyes water, but the worst used to be Poison.
Found it utterly cloying, too sweet and overpowering. Have a very keen sense of smell, though, so it might just be me.🤔

icelollycraving · 16/12/2020 07:57

Fragrance is so personal. A few of my favourites have been mentioned here (Chance & Eau Dynamisante).
I don’t like anything with tuberose or patchouli.
I remember when Eden launched in the early 90s, Cacharel threw a lot of money at the launch. I work in beauty retail, never seen such an unanimous response from staff and customers, disgusting stuff. Saying that, a little sniff would transport me back to those fun days Smile

CherryValanc · 16/12/2020 07:57

Not really noticed perfume on others for years. I think the trend in my childhood days (80s) of wearing perfume so strong you were smelt before you were see have gone.

Anyway, last time I noticed perfume I didn't like would be when I lived with other women and I got it on application. I can't recall the name of it.

Might have been Dune.

LaceyBetty · 16/12/2020 08:06

Oh no, I love l'eu d'issey. I thought everyone did as I always get compliments when I wear it, but maybe people just feel sorry for me. Grin Someone mentioned Cool Water. I knew someone in my twenties who bathed in it.

Divebar · 16/12/2020 08:22

I like l’eu d’issy although I haven’t worn it for a long time. I stick with the same 2 now. Really if people can smell you without standing pretty close to you then you’re wearing too much.

parlourpalm · 16/12/2020 08:44

@SingleWontMingle

I think your perfume taste changes with age. I loved Charlie, Loulou, Exclamation, Tribe, Body Shop Dewberry...and for men Cool Water, Jazz etc when I was a teen. Now they give me an instant headache (the ones that are still with us).

An older woman walked past me in the street the other day, filling my nasal passage with a blast of Chloe Narcisse and behind my eye exploded!

I could have written this!
MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/12/2020 08:52

Samsara - it smells like vomit!
Also SJP Lovely. Smells like cat piss on me

OTOH, I like Alien, but it is very distinct. I can understand why people would love or hate it.

AriesTheRam · 16/12/2020 08:59

Chanel 19 and no 5

HerselfIndoors · 16/12/2020 09:01

Anything strong and cloying or that has that kind of dirty smell that’s supposed to be sexy. Tuberose, heavy patchouli, yang ylang (although I have smelled a real ylang ylang tree at night and it was amazing, I can’t stand it in perfume). Heavy vanilla, and tobacco - why does anyone want to smell like a cigarette? I like citrus, light rose and herbal spa-like smells, anything with that stinky vibe gives me a headache.

I used to have VW libertine which I liked, but boudoir ugh! I’ve been guffawing at the sweaty minge descriptions :) the clue’s in the name!

AriesTheRam · 16/12/2020 09:01

@Divebar I bought Poison for the first time last year.Only wear it sparingly at night in the winter

sqirrelfriends · 16/12/2020 09:04

Carolina Herrera 212 smells like cheap air freshener on other people and like solid alcohol on me.

Ditto DKNY woman.

I love Jo Malone lime basil and mandarin as a candle but it reeks as a perfume, makes me think of festival toilets.

fitbciz1 · 16/12/2020 09:12

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir - so strong 🤢

Juancornetto · 16/12/2020 09:14

I really dislike Armani Code, it smells like fly spray to me.
I really want to like the classic Guerlains but I don't like the Guerlainade accord that they use in most their smells.
Joop is horrid and also reminds me of an ex
Not a fan of the really sweet smells that have been so popular since the noughties but I do like a good creamy vanilla

Divebar · 16/12/2020 09:16

@AriesTheRam

Lol. I dare say it smells fabulous on you. You’re right - definitely a fragrance for winter time.

DidgeDoolittle · 16/12/2020 09:22

Blimey, I had my post deleted because I said that Clinique Aromatics didn't smell of young ladies ( iykwim?). However, it seems that it is ok to say it smells of piss and old folks homes. I'll go with that then.
