Are there any perfumes you absolutely hate?

Just that really.
Reason for asking, I ordered blind ( stupid I know) a Liz Earle perfume. Even wanting to try them, no chance of testing at the moment, so picked one that loads of reviews said was gorgeous, favourite perfume, ever, signature scent, always getting stopped & asked what it was etc. The description sounded ok. It came & I hate it, it actually makes me feel sick when I smell it, couldn’t wait to scrub it off. It’s so persistent though!

@Bryna

Anais anais, very over powering ( however I may be biased as it's the one MIL wears and it suits her personality WinkGrin)
My grandmother wore it so it has both positive and negative connotations for me. I get car sick and remember being in a small car with it. Although having read lower down about Charlie, maybe it was that one...

I don't like any of the very strong ones or the very 'grown up' ones so Poison, Chanel, etc.
Anything used to cover up the smell of smoking or so strong that it lingers in a room the person has already left.

I find that you can usually have a good idea from the packaging. If it's a light colour, I'll probably find it OK.

"it did occur to me that if we'd been in a restaurant and sat next to her it would have affected my entire experience."

If someone eats a banana near me when I'm eating, all my food smells of banana :(

Chanel No.5. Think it's the aldehydes. Smells like dirty nappies and/or dirty cash/coins. Chanel Coco Mademoiselle on the other hand is gorgeous.

Anais Anais. I never liked it anyway and the name just seems dated and naff now.

Shitonthebloodything · 17/12/2020 18:57

Clinique Happy and Charlotte Tilbury. I had to walk out of the CT shop empty handed because I couldn't stand to be in there with that God awful granny smell being pumped in.

I like JM Pomegranate noir but it gives me a headache

tobee · 17/12/2020 21:02

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir. Everyone seems like it but me.

tobee · 17/12/2020 21:04

Yes about Youth Dew. It's got a nice overtone but ruined by undertone of horse poo.

tobee · 17/12/2020 21:05

And a Sun Moon Stars dupe. Smelt like rancid pumpkin.

XingMing · 17/12/2020 21:44

Anything involving tuberose.

This thread is bursting with ageist & spiteful comments. Surprised they haven’t been reported.
Shame on some of you!
“ Care homes “
“ Old ladies “
Shows such massive ignorance actually. Angry

Agreed.

I think they have been reported but ime
MNHQ are very selective about what they let fly.

Daisy is nice, as are the summer versions. It’s in whitish packaging and in a very cute bottle. As is L’eau d’Issey. It’s also lovely and smells of carnations. The bottles are stylish.

🤷🏻‍♀️

louisethedisease · 17/12/2020 21:54

I detest DKNY the original, Gucci red and D&G light blue. Love Alien though.

Janegrey333 · 17/12/2020 21:54

Youth Dew is poison.

Janegrey333 · 17/12/2020 21:54

Light Blue is beautiful!

Janegrey333 · 17/12/2020 21:56

Escape - the way de toilette was fresh and full of ozone vibes. Love light perfumes.

Janegrey333 · 17/12/2020 21:57

...the eau de toilette...

yawnsvillex · 17/12/2020 21:58

@MrsSchadenfreude

Oscar de la Renta. Reminds me of a drink and drugs fuelled lost weekend I had in my youth when I ended up having a threesome with two work colleagues. Monday morning was a bit awkward.

This has made me howl!!!! Love it hahahahhah

Good on you.

Amazing how a smell can take you to such a vivid memory.

Hats off to you.

DrMaryMalone · 17/12/2020 22:12

Amor Amor gives me an instant migraine. I also can’t stand Chanel No. 5, CK Obsession or SJP Lovely. Oh and Van Cleef and Arpels....shudder! I spent a year as a student working part time on the perfume counter at Debenhams and got to know pretty quickly which ones to avoid recommending to men looking for something for their wife! For men there was a Paco one called Black XS which was vile.

Staffy1 · 17/12/2020 22:13

I love this thread. I haven't laughed so much in ages, some of the descriptions of smells are so funny.

NorbertMeubles · 17/12/2020 22:17

Angel

wewillmeetagain · 17/12/2020 22:18

Chanel number 5 makes me heave!

Absolutely love angel and John Paul gaultier though

feliciabirthgiver · 17/12/2020 22:38

Swinging by to confirm Joop is indeed vile!

Bloodhoundgang · 17/12/2020 22:43

Dune. I had to feign morning sickness to escape from a patient slathered in it once. I was not pregnant but I was about to vom and it was the only acceptable excuse I could rapidly think of.
Eden also. They smell like what I imagine a dementors kiss would smell like.
