in a dropped waist black dress, black boots, chunky but not ridiculous nice scarf( not frumpy), short funky grey hair. Cross body bag.

I have lost it, if indeed I ever had it and look like a sag of spuds. Yes a sag of spuds. Just that.

My mother is 81 and looks great. She is slim and does Pilates and swimming and goes to the gym. She recently had a breast reduction and now has the boobs of an 18 year old which I find quite funny.

Imissmoominmama · 14/11/2020 19:00

@thedevilinablackdress- I agree completely!

Imissmoominmama · 14/11/2020 19:01

@Snog- your mum sounds awesome!

Emmapeeler2 · 14/11/2020 19:04

My DM is 72 and always looks fabulous. It puts me to shame. She does no classes, but loves clothes, walks miles and has an expensive face cream addiction.

Chickoletta · 14/11/2020 19:41

@randomer

I think it is harder to look stlish when you are short, unless you are doing that elfin thing.
I’m too fat to be an elf.
randomer · 14/11/2020 20:02

Contemplating the 7 k for breast reduction.

Yes id agree. Im 5'1 and i just look so frumpy the moment i go over 9 stone. I know other people manage it but my look is fairly casual and it just doesnt suit extra weight. I tend now to dress simply and that looks good and quite stylish when you are fairly slim (9 stone at 5'1" is hardly slim but it is the slimest i can manage/) and the moment i put on weight, i go from looking stylish to looking frumpy. Just half a stone can do that when you're short. 😭

Snog · 16/11/2020 09:40

@randomer my mum had wanted a breast reduction all her adult life and finally did it 2 years ago at age 79.
She is absolutely delighted with the results and only wishes she had done it earlier. The bonus of doing it later in life though is that you end up with the breasts of an 18 year old!

Combined with Pilates it has made my mums posture amazing which I am sure is good for her general health.

IrmaFayLear · 16/11/2020 10:02

I agree OwlOne. The best I ever looked was when I was 7 stone. It's true that it's difficult to carry extra weight when you're short - every pound looks like it's an extra stone. I still look reasonable from the back but, boy, does being thin wreak havoc with your face Sad . When I put make up on Iggy Pop springs to mind...

randomer · 16/11/2020 14:02

Everypound looks like an extra stone

Bloody hell I am 30 stone overweight. No wonder I look like shit.

My DM is almost 90 years young...
She always looks amazing...even in her night clothes. I think her big secret is her love of life and that she is beautiful on the inside..always has a smile for people she meets and she "smizes" to take a page from Tyra Banks book of beauty. That, and of course she always has on bright lipstick...it's amazing how a nice lipstick can brighten up your look...
There's an old adage, "you aren't completely dressed until you put on your smile"🙂
When I was a child and my DM made me wear an outfit that I said looked bad, her famous line was..." Put a smile on your face and no one will notice!" So, so true...except in this time of having to wear protective masks!
Although I read a great story lately about that...a little girl told a stranger that she could tell that the lady was smiling under her mask...stranger said, Yes, you are right...How can you tell?" Little girl told her it was because her eyes were smiling...
A smile always makes ANY outfit look better.Smile😃

To be fair..
I'm 54.. 5'4 11st 7
16 on top, 12-14 below, and wear what I want. Mainly skinny jeans, trainers or boots and jumper or sweatshirt 🤷‍♀️
I don't think about what others think of me, I'm me, I'm comfortable Grin

OwlOne · 16/11/2020 18:55

I love life. That's a separate issue!

Part of loving life is enjoying looking stylish. For me.

5'4" is just that bit taller, a few extra pounds wont be all out on show.

I dont want to be thin thin but i think 8 and a half would be good at 5'1"

No sign of it yet 😭😀

30 or 3?
pinkhousesarebest · 16/11/2020 19:05

What sort of ageist crap is this? I see plenty of older women looking fab. Why wouldn’t they - no baby flab, time to exercise, a lifetime’s experience of honing their own style under their belt.

IrmaFayLear · 16/11/2020 19:06

Bore off with your “ageist” stuff. Some of us aged want to talk regaining style without being hectored.

PickAChew · 16/11/2020 19:09

I think plenty of older women do look fab but I think thar what stood out for the OP is that she was dressed quite differently from the majority of women of that age.

There's a couple I often see passing my house who must be around 60. Their clothes aren't particularly out there, but they do have a bit of a punk vibe, which I love.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/11/2020 17:12

"It is harder to look stylish when you're short."

Ah. Is this my problem then? I also think it's almost impossible to look stylish when you feel the cold a lot. I just can't wear a lot of the things that other people wear and when you layer a lot it makes you look fat.

randomer · 17/11/2020 20:12

I'd rather be ageist than sizeist. Its so sad.

OP posts:
XingMing · 18/11/2020 20:51

Being old, I'd rather sizeist than ageist. A person can change their size, but not their age or height.

OwlOne · 19/11/2020 07:41

True

IrmaFayLear · 19/11/2020 08:39

Not really. You can change weight but not shape. I think androgynous types fair better as they get older - lean arms and legs - and rounder, not fatter - people do worse, so those prone to bingo wings, soft hips and thighs etc. No amount of Pilates can alter your body type.

randomer · 19/11/2020 09:16

What a world we live in, yet again anybody with excess weight is to be despised and put down by other women. Over and over again.

The moral superiority of the size 10 knows no bounds.

Audreyseyebrows · 19/11/2020 09:19

I’m short and never had a problem looking stylish Wink (she says while sat in striped pyjamas!).

Most of the people that I admire style wise are older. I can’t be doing with the whole Instagram sheep look. I want to be me.

Audreyseyebrows · 19/11/2020 09:20

Btw, @randomer good thread. Really interesting reading! Ignore the nit pickers.
