in a dropped waist black dress, black boots, chunky but not ridiculous nice scarf( not frumpy), short funky grey hair. Cross body bag.

I have lost it, if indeed I ever had it and look like a sag of spuds. Yes a sag of spuds. Just that.

Fgs — again — what is with all of these posters jumping on all wide-eyed to act like there is no valid reason to mention the age of an older woman with amazing style? It seems massively disingenuous.

Are you all just pretending you don’t realise there is a massive cultural bias against the idea of older women being stylish? You’re somehow above it? You don’t see age as relevant? Lucky you, is all I can say, if it’s not important to you.

Mentioning her age in a positive context is part of pushing back against ageism. Obviously.

Imissmoominmama · 12/11/2020 10:11

Exactly @ShortSilence- it’s almost as though some people think women who are older should be ashamed of that fact. Would those same people be picking up on the mention of age in a post about a 30 yr old’s outfit?

I’m proud to be an older woman.

Of course it is. Unfortunately it’s not obvious as some of the responses here attest.

OwlOne · 12/11/2020 11:48

The woman described in the OP's post sounded very far from stylish to me but i appreciate somebody of any age having their own style and making it work for them. I look well put together but indistinguishable from a million other well put together women my age.

I notice women who manage to walk that line between having their own look thay flatters them and not looking too ostentatious or silly

XingMing · 12/11/2020 12:03

I love to see people looking wonderful, at any age, and whatever their style.

Being 64 and proud of it, I'd like to point out in a non-confrontational way, that older women are often written off as interested only in slippers and comfortable thermals from the back pages of the colour supplements. Happily, things are improving. Not so long ago, hitting menopause was a signal to cut hair short and get a perm.

Is your hair long?
VinylDetective · 12/11/2020 12:44

Who cares?

Sundaypolodog · 12/11/2020 13:04

Sorry to hijack this thread somewhat. Can I ask where does a stylish 60 plus woman get her hair cut and what styles are both classic and funky and good for thick curly wavy. Ps I'm 5'7" and slimmest(!) with long legs

My hairdresser has recently retired and did a good job on my hair and before this 2nd lockdown, I made the mistake of going to a local one recommended on Facebook as being good with curly hair - it's got no shape and seems uneven in length and thickness.

SugarAndSpice33 · 12/11/2020 13:12

@KatharinaRosalie I agree but healthy diet plays a vital role as well - In terms of food, seeds and nuts could give our skin a real boost.

SugarAndSpice33 · 12/11/2020 13:22

Go for long layered haircut this time and requests your hairdresser to keep the first layer right under your chin so it would be clipped easily and will give you a perfect layered look without styling and would be easier to manage. I've got a frizzy hairs by the way and doing the same.@Sundaypolodog

toomanyplants · 12/11/2020 13:25

Interesting thread!
A while back I was in Tesco and a random lady came to me and said I just need to say you look great, gok wan said if you ever see a person with style..tell them!
I had such a spring in my step for days afterwards!
I love to compliment people too, I tend to do it nowadays with coats, love to see a fine coat or a jaunty hat
@16purplecolour16 you sound positively wonderful, with or without the bra, you rock!

Thanks @SugarAndSpice33 I hadn't thought of that, most elderly are advised to go short like a helmet! I can see that we may need a bit of a lift as our faces start to droop. When you say keep the first layer chin length do you mean the longest layer or the shortest layer? 😀

Oh dear, "elderly."....you will be torn limb from limb now.

My hair is very curly, and grows out rather than down!

Yes mine does this. - it looks like I've a pair of horns
Bluesheep8 · 12/11/2020 15:13

What is wrong with everyone today?! There seems to be such nastiness on every thread Confused

IrmaFayLear · 12/11/2020 15:23

It’s helpful to see a person’s age mentioned in terms of style. As a mid 50s person I would like a few pointers and ideas.

I know I know I know that age shouldn’t dictate one’s style, but there are clothes that if worn by an older woman or man come to that make you look like an idiot. I always did the granny chic thing, which was ok, but now a layered mass of cardigans does indeed make me look like a bona fide granny, so no more florals or layers for me. My teenage dd is doing the US mom look: white polo-neck jumper and high-waisted jeans. If I wore that get up I’d be hauled off back in time to an 80s sit com.

TopCatlivedinadustbin · 12/11/2020 15:33

Just seen this thread in Active Convos. Shit title, giving the impression that a woman of 60+ looking great is such a -gasp!- rarity that someone just had to start a thread about it.

But that’s true of any age. It really is.

You haven’t RTFT, have you?
TopCatlivedinadustbin · 12/11/2020 15:37

@Floisme

Yes we walk among you. What can we help you with?
Brilliant response, Flo!
TopCatlivedinadustbin · 12/11/2020 15:49

Sadly, I am rarely "wowed" in the UK by any women's dress men even less so. Perhaps its the English 'character' not to bother after a certain age (say, 22?)*

Oh not this nonsense again!

TopCatlivedinadustbin · 12/11/2020 15:51

You haven’t RTFT, have you?

Yes, I have. And it’s a shit title and nothing on the thread changes my opionion.

ShortSilence · 12/11/2020 16:08

It’s not a shit title and nothing on the thread changes my opinion, so there you go. Subjective. 🤷‍♀️

IMO a few people seem to be projecting their own hang-ups about the mention of age being inherently negative onto the OP, who as far as I can see has expressed no surprise whatsoever about an older woman looking good. She just highlighted it.

I would not have clicked if the title hadn’t mentioned age, because I am not that fussed about S&B threads broadly, but I am particularly interested in hearing people say positive things about older women’s style.

Because there isn’t enough of that, whereas there’s a fucking constant stream out there in the world of ageist remarks and people celebrating youthfulness.
