in a dropped waist black dress, black boots, chunky but not ridiculous nice scarf( not frumpy), short funky grey hair. Cross body bag.

I have lost it, if indeed I ever had it and look like a sag of spuds. Yes a sag of spuds. Just that.

@IrmaFayLear

Not really. You can change weight but not shape. I think androgynous types fair better as they get older - lean arms and legs - and rounder, not fatter - people do worse, so those prone to bingo wings, soft hips and thighs etc. No amount of Pilates can alter your body type.
Do they fare better, though? I always think those older women who are thin and bony look older. By “androgynous”, I assume you mean short haired and kitted out in “angular” clothes? That style is unforgiving.

your woman sounds like she was channelling Moira Rose. In the very best way.

randomer · 19/11/2020 10:55

No, is as a previous poster mentioned, she stood out to me in a sea of beige and masked, huddled figures; her height, her demeanor , her posture , her look. So I quickly put together a covert operation from the safety of the discounted items fridge, and made notes.

This is funny...

GintyMarlow2 · 19/11/2020 11:03

Unfortunately I'm short and dumpy with a massive bum. Nothing - and I mean nothing, looks good on me. I look through catalogues and like the clothes, and then read that the model is 5'10" and the dress she's wearing is a size 8. Sorry, not going to cut it for me.
I'd love to see a model who's 5'0" and wearing a size 18. But it's not happening because no-one that size and shape looks anything other than a badly wrapped parcel.

IrmaFayLear · 19/11/2020 11:07

Regardless of what men think, some of those trends are darn ugly. I can’t speak for many men, but I know dh hates hairdos, scarves, and my “comfort” trousers...

randomer · 19/11/2020 12:57

OMG have I slipped into some sort of strange time warp here? I thought the recommended you tube was going to be something witty and fresh.

Your dh hates your comfort trousers? Boo bloody hoo.

@GintyMarlow2, Evans have some nice things maybe?

Well, that’s the look if you want men to approve. Lol Personally, I wouldn’t wasn’t to strut about in nondescript garments in a sort of anodyne style. Nor would I want to tottering in high heels thing. There is a happy medium.

In a recent WP drama set in France, Fear by the Lake, the prosecutor looked like the woman in the centre above. Is that what some imagine is an edgy look?

Corrected version.

That video is very dated. Who has a Blackberry these days? Anyway I couldn't care less what men think about my clothes. Stylish men are few and far between.

Terralee · 19/11/2020 15:49

@Janegrey333 To me the woman in the photo looks awful, she's wearing a man's suit & stood like a man with no colour or jewellery anywhere.

My mum is 71, she's very stylish & looks young, basically her rule is that she wears black, or bright colours, but no beiges, pastels or pale greys.

She wears light make up daily, goes to a fashionable salon to have her shoulder length hair cut, & colours it a nice blonde.

She is quite disabled by a spinal fracture at present & is waiting for complex spinal surgery but that doesn't stop her showering daily, and getting out the ghds!
So she gets cold easily as can't move very fast so wears skinny jeans / leggings with boots & warm bright coloured tunic jumpers, scarves & pretty jewellery.

She doesn't have much money & doesn't shop online so shops locally on the high street in Dorothy Perkins, Primark, M&S, Tu at Sainsbury, F&F at Tesco, M&Co etc.

randomer · 19/11/2020 16:05

@Terralee, brava your Mum, she sounds great.

Uggs are mentioned and they are still in evidence. I just picked the first thing I came across. Didn’t think to check whether it was an iPhone...
Janegrey333 · 19/11/2020 16:14

Stylish men are few and far between.

Interesting. HmmWhat if a man DARED to say that?
Not true, incidentally.

randomer · 19/11/2020 17:19

If a man said that everybody would pile on about a 32 " waist trousers.

( dream on)

The most stylish person I know is short, overweight and VERY pear-shaped. She just finds a way to make trends work for her. I've known her for more than 20 years and she always looks amazing.

Temporarything · 22/11/2020 08:31

I am well on my way to being old and I love seeing fashionable older women. Gives me inspiration.

IrmaFayLear · 22/11/2020 09:16

I don’t see what’s wrong with saying dh doesn’t like my comfort trousers. There are plenty of his clothes I don’t like! Sometimes you need a friend to tell you something looks awful. You don’t have to take any notice, but it’s good to know.
