Would you ditch the dye?

Im 37 and my hair is so white, not even grey, it's pure white. i take after my mum who was the same, so much so I can't remember her with anything other than white hair. I need to dye it every 3-4 weeks and it's just such a chore.

The other issue is my hair is so dark and cool toned going lighter isn't really an option that won't be just as much hard work.

What would you do? Part of me wants to embrace the grey but I don't want to look old and haggard.

Would you ditch the dye?

I've done it and love the fact I don't have to dye it any longer. I don't think it makes me look haggard and I can finally wear red Grin

"Who cares what others think though?"

Anyone who posts in style & beauty obviously.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 24/11/2020 12:07

I'm in the same situation and I just spray the roots in between home hair dye. When I forget the spray it's incredibly ageing. I would say there's not enough grey in your hair, it would be 'in between'.

I wouldn't ever say this in real life to anyone but I'm not a fan of anything but a pure sleek silver bob if you're going grey. That does look amazing on the over 50s, but there's a tricky 'middle age' where personally I think hair dye and spraying the roots looks best. I have friends that are half grey and it is ageing. But @Remythecat I think your hair is absolutely gorgeous!

But the most important thing is that you're happy and comfortable with your hair. If you start growing the dye out and change your mind, easy to dye it again.

ChoporNot · 24/11/2020 18:23

Do it. I did it (with the MN collective behind me) 5/6 years ago aged 42. I wish I had done it earlier. I did the big chop.

I LOVE it. Lots of compliments over the last 5 years. No more dye (and yes it was such a chore). I do not plan dye-jobs around my social life, no more worrying about roots, no expense. My hair and skin tone are in harmony.

I have not regretted it once.

Do I look older? I do not care. I am now 48. Do I look it? Yes, probably. But more because of the wrinkles than the hair. Would dying my hair make me look younger? No. Dyed hair imvho more often than not makes people look older - the dye does not suit their natural skin tone.

ChoporNot · 24/11/2020 18:25

Oh, and my curls came back with a vengeance. The dye had been fucking up my curl pattern completely.

SunshineCake · 24/11/2020 18:29

I am having a similar dilemma. Mine is steel grey. I went grey after a few shock which was more of a surprise as I have been dyeing my hair for years so used to natural roots, not new natural grey. I've had enough of dyeing it and had thought about going lighter to soften the contrast but I just can't be bothered.

SunshineCake · 24/11/2020 18:39

You all sound so knowledgable. I have no idea about colours, tones, what suits my skin tone. I am thinking of doing that app that suggests a colour for you and depending on it I might dye once more to let the grey blend in.

SunshineCake · 24/11/2020 18:43

Utter nonsense from grey whatever their name is. Also bitchy comment. You look much younger than 48 @ShrikeAttack

I don't think you look 48 never mind older.

I've gone grey, I'm 52, I look neither old or haggard Hmm.
I had stopped wearing black but I'm back wearing it now, my natural colour is so more flattering to my skintone now.

Absolutely she does. But let’s not let the facts get in the way of a good prejudice.
CoffeeBeansGalore · 24/11/2020 19:18

Have you thought about a grey undertoned "mermaid" colour? Very different from your current look, but maybe an easier transition from dark to white/grey.

Chop and Coco I agree with you both about grey matching your skin tone. When I look back at old photos the colour is so harsh and much too dark for me. I'm pretty silver on top and more salt and pepper at the back and sides and I think it suits me more.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 25/11/2020 01:01

You look older. It’s the grey hair.

Saucer of milk over here, please!

SunnyUpNorth · 25/11/2020 07:14

I just popped on S&B to see how the people who had stopped dyeing their hair over lockdown were getting on....can’t come on here too often as it always costs me money!

I am similar to you. I am 40 and have quite pale skin and did have very dark brown almost black hair (think Irish colouring). My hair and akin are very very cool in tone, so when I was dyeing my hair dark brown it was never great as they often have orangey/red tones to them. I got my first grey hairs when I was about 14 and have been dyeing it since.

Probably around 5 years ago now I started to go lighter as I had so much white/grey that it was visible around 2-3 weeks after a dye and also the dye was fading on the naturally lighter areas and starting to look really orangey. I decided to get highlights to break up the growth line a bit. That wasn’t really very successful and so in the end I got more and more highlights/lowlights (still not really sure about all this blonde terminology) and went blonde.

I had my colours done years ago and they warned me never to go blonde or have any warmth in my hair due to having such a cool skintone. So I had to go quite a pale, ashy blonde.

I now haven’t dyed my hair since January. I had an appointment in March for highlights just after lockdown began so missed that and didn’t have much choice other than to see how things went.

I have a pure white streak off centre at the top on the other side to my parting, the rest is more grey and then underneath at the back of my head it is still fairly dark. My hair on top now seems quite naturally streaky so it blends in really well with the highlighted bits even though I probably have about 3-4 inches of undyed roots. I like it when it is down but when it is tied back the different in colour around my head and from roots to tips is more obvious.

I had decided I would go with it and grow it out completely, however I have caved and booked an appointment for after lockdown 😬

My hairdresser does a half head of highlights but spilt over my whole head so they are more spaced out. I was having it dyed too often (I think that was habit from dyeing it dark so often) and the bottom half is a fairly block blonde now. I think if I only get a few highlights once or twice a year going forward it will be enough to break up the colour but with lots of the natural showing through.

When I see pictures of younger people who look great having gone grey/white they are usually very groomed, wear lipstick, style their hair etc. I’m not really like that so I think it could age me quite a lot if I went totally natural.

I miss my natural hair so much but apart from in photos I’ve pretty much accepted my new hair.

My hair is also loads softer and stronger now and finally seems to be growing longer.

grey12 · 25/11/2020 10:02

@SunshineCake about the badger stripe? I didn't name it! Hmm sorry if the name offends you. But the longer you keep dyeing your hair dark the more contrasting to the whites it will become! You start dyeing every few months and end up having to do it every couple of weeks otherwise it does not look good. Count me out... I personally hate going to the hairdressers!

MadDoggoLady · 25/11/2020 12:01

@ShrikeAttack you just look steaming to be honest Grin

MorrisBonsson · 25/11/2020 12:04

I think its pretty when you have a proper streak so it looks deliberately lightened or l8ke Anna's of Frozen otherwise when it's just root it looks sooo aging. I'd dye at 37 and maybe late 40s to 50s i would add streaks of grey.

MorrisBonsson · 25/11/2020 12:08

I think its a question of:

Do i want to look my age or younger? If the answer is yes then dye the greys.

Babykoala1 · 25/11/2020 12:41

I think a lot of being able to carry off grey does depend on your skin tone, overall appearance, dress sense etc. I’m dreading finding my first grey because ash tones don’t suit me at all. Even an ever so slightly ashy blonde washes me out, I’m just one of those people that needs warm against my skin otherwise I’ll look like a corpse. It will be hard to tell if you will like it without just doing it, then if you don’t like it you can always dye over it. All the pictures on this thread look great though, if you can pull it off it can be a striking look

Janegrey333 · 25/11/2020 12:50

The best thing to cope with grey is blonde dye.

Gatekeeper · 25/11/2020 12:57

bloody hell @ShrikeAttack you are GORGEOUS!!!!

NotMeNoNo · 25/11/2020 13:47

There's only one way to find out. I grew mine out last year but it was very patchy and not in a good artfully streaked way. Going to try again in a few years when I have more clean white.

fantasmasgoria1 · 25/11/2020 13:53

No. I hate the greys. I don't have loads but enough to bother me.

Hayeahnobut · 25/11/2020 13:57

So many beautiful greys!

For those saying they look older, I guess you mean they look their age. There's absolutely nothing wrong with looking your age.
