Plus size in a Cos dress

LadyPrigsbottom · 10/07/2020 15:52

I have an event (covid allowing) with lovely friends, some of whom are inctedibly stylish.

I am not stylish, but I do love clothes if that makes sense.

I bought this dress and I think I'm going to keep it, but wanted to get some opinions on here, if anyone would oblige!

I've put it with a navy, biker jacket in a very soft faux suede and espadrilles. But other options if weather is worse are these boots.

What do people think please? Be honest, I can take it... I think WinkGrin.

I am a size 16/18, apple shape.

Im afraid I’m not loving it op, I feel the frills are Adding some extra bulk which you don’t have. Nice legs by the way

titheadz · 10/07/2020 16:00

i'm not sure it's the best shape but you have fab legs.

LadyPrigsbottom · 10/07/2020 16:00

Oh thank you Grin!

Hmmmm I definitely have the bulk, I'm afraid... but thank you for saying that.

I'm a similar shape & like Cos but go for ones with less volume if that makes sense

GreyishDays · 10/07/2020 16:03

I think the jacket is the problem, the dress is lovely. Can you wear a long sleeved top under it?

titheadz · 10/07/2020 16:04

Agree that the jacket hits the wrong part of the dress.

can we see it on with the boots?

corlan · 10/07/2020 16:04

I don't think it does you any favours- it swamps you a bit.

whatswithtodaytoday · 10/07/2020 16:05

I think it looks nice without the jacket - mainly because you have great legs! It is a bit flouncy though.

The boots might look a bit heavy, but I'd need to see them on.

LadyPrigsbottom · 10/07/2020 16:05

Hmmmm cardi maybe? Instead of jacket? Or just no jacket and bring a coat in case of terrible weather?

I do think it looks better without the jacket and the dress does look nice on. Bear in mind that I am plus size, so if it looks as if it's making me look a bit large, well it's because I am indeed, a bit large Smile!

can we see it on with the boots?

I'm not in the house at the moment, but I can do when I get in.

I'd say no jacket & fingers x!

Ulrikaka · 10/07/2020 16:14

Doesn't work with the jacket at all.
I feel that the frill is the wrong length for you. You do have great legs, so the length of the dress is not the problem in itself, but the frill is just a bit odd. I think the espadrilles look nice.

Grumpbum123 · 10/07/2020 16:15

Plus size? WTF you look normal and have a great figure

ApocalypseNowt · 10/07/2020 16:16

Do you have a jacket that would be a bit longer than the dress?

I love the dress just not with that jacket! I think the boots will look good though.

MikeUniformMike · 10/07/2020 16:20

It doesn't look plus size but the jacket doesn't look right with it.

I think Cos suits a more flat chested woman.

Try something that shows off your nice figure, not hide it.

wowfudge · 10/07/2020 16:23

What does the dress look like worn with a belt? You have great legs and the dress is just swamping you - it's adding unflattering fullness where you don't want it. I think something waisted or belted would be better. Agree with others that the jacket doesn't work with the dress.

LadyPrigsbottom · 10/07/2020 16:23

Ah bless you @Grumpbum123, but the scales and dress labels don't lie! I've gained a lot of weight in lockdown...and before lockdown tbh.

I don't have a long jacket. I have a very nice, but too small to fasten, Hobbs, wool type coat which might work, just for outdoors. I could just wear it open if the weather is ok. It's also navy.

I think you look lovely in that dress. It's got that lovely detailing around the hem and you have amazing legs to carry it off.

I like those neutral shoes, makes your legs look super long.

The jacket, especially being dark, is not a great length with the dress. Have you got another jacket that is longer, to finish around the length of the dress? Or a lighter colour to compliment the dress, if the jacket is shorter?

I think dark boots might be ok, but I'm not a fan of pointy toes at the moment. It would all depend on whether you wear tights (what colour?!) as to where those boots would cut your legs off visually.

Sorry for babbling. Summary: great looking dress on you, only tweaks needed IMHO.

DoraemonDingDong · 10/07/2020 16:26

Hobbs coat sounds great, sacrifice warmth for style for sure Grin

LadyPrigsbottom · 10/07/2020 16:26

A belt is another idea...I'll have a rummage around later and see if there's anything that works with it. I just fear if I put a belt round it, the frilly skirt would poke out?

fascinated · 10/07/2020 16:28

No. You look like you have a lovely figure but that is not working for you at all.

fascinated · 10/07/2020 16:30

Another one who struggles to see you as plus size

MrsGrindah · 10/07/2020 16:34

Sorry but I think it’s looks very uneven . I find a lot of Cos dresses can be like that. It’s not flattering I’m afraid. But you should definitely show off those pins. Actually something more figure hugging might be better!

LadyPrigsbottom · 10/07/2020 16:36

What does everyone think of this as an alternative please?

No tights and maybe courts or ballet flats? Is it a bit casual? The event isn't formal and is a daytime thing, so don't imagine it would be totally out of place in this.

Thank you for the lovely compliments Flowers. Not sure if you can see my shape a bit more in this dress, but it is a size 18 and I definitely couldn't go smaller. A recent size 18, not vintage or anything, so I do think I'm plus.

I'm a similar size and shape to you although I sadly don't have your legs. I think that the problem with that dress and COS in general is that it designs for flat chested women and then just scales up. SO the dress just hangs down from the widest part of your boobs and makes you look full all the way down whereas you'll go back in under the bust so something a bit more fitted would work better. I sometimes put darts in a dress like this to give it a bit more shape.
