Now that the Commonwealth event is nearly over, we have another treat ahead of us. Maxima in Indonesia!

In light of what happened on the previous thread, I'm going to take a leaf out of Elizabeth SMT Holmes' book and say critique the clothes and the styling but not the physical appearances of various royal women.

Oh no queen fingers crossed 🤞

It’s the weddings/funerals cancellations that are hitting me hardest at the moment. I know it ‘should’ be the job losses and deaths but I think perhaps I’m just refusing to process those.

Sorry off topic, back to fashion (sort of).

It’s the hairstyles on Diana that make her look older than her years. Perhaps it’s my age but they make her look ‘adult’ when she was barely out of her teens.

MotherofPearl · 18/03/2020 21:40

Oh @QueenOfTheAndals I really hope this is over by August. not only because I have a holiday booked to Northern Italy in August

paradyning · 18/03/2020 21:43

This won't be over by August. The second peak is thought to be hitting around summer

StartupRepair · 18/03/2020 21:48

In Australia we are just moving into autumn and winter so it's not going to be over any time soon.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/03/2020 21:55

I have a southern Italy trip planned for the end of July @motherofpearl, plus family booked to come from overseas too. But it is what is is and can't be helped 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m sorry to hear that Queen we’ve a family wedding in Cyprus coming up which I can’t see us going to.

It’s such scary times.

StCharlotte · 18/03/2020 22:47

Oh you poor thing Queen!

Fingers crossed for a miracle ❤

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/03/2020 23:26

Max and Wax wedding retrospective. The outfits on most of the female guests are extremely noughties!

Looking at the Diana pictures I was struck by how amazing she looked in white/ ivory. It’s a very difficult colour to wear for most people and washed them out but she looks radiant.

whitershadeofpale · 18/03/2020 23:36

Take this as an example. That much white near my face would make me look ill.

I think there were few colours she couldn't wear - Diana really was radiant.

In her earlier photos though, her hats were nearly always too small (and her clothes too big). I think it may have been the fashion.

Frugalkitty, I think that is my all time favourite dress too - so lovely and light and princess like. Her later stuff was fab but that look was magical. I think she was just pregnant when she wore it and she fell asleep at the dinner.

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/03/2020 00:38

What amazes me is that Diana’s clothes varied to such a huge degree. Many times she looked fabulous but would then drop such an almighty clanger with the most revoltingly ugly outfit. Often just within weeks/months of each other so not caused by her fashion evolution.

I saw the exhibition at Kensington Palace a couple of years ago and the Catherine Walker daytime suits in pastel colours that she took to wearing were just breathtaking. The tailoring was exquisite. The other amazing dress was the white beaded ‘Elvis’ dress and bolero. Standing close to it made you realise just how tall she was.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 19/03/2020 00:47

My favourite evening dress that Diana wore was this one, I think she loved it too as she wore it in several occasions, she had star quality is spades.

I am another lover of Diana’s wedding dress though I know it’s not fashionable to admit that! but to me nothing says ‘Fairytale Princess’ more than this photo.

Love the Max & Wax slideshow. Her veil is incredible

frugalkitty · 19/03/2020 07:55

I forgot to add yesterday but AppleKatie's comment has reminded me.......we often criticise Kate for dressing older than her years and relying on rather 'mother of the bride' outfits, but it struck me looking through the Diana pics that she did exactly the same and was a decade younger than Kate when she married in. I know it was the eighties, but I don't remember the same kind of criticism, maybe it's a sign of the times?

Queen I hope you don't have to postpone your wedding. My DS (he's 17 soon) is a bit disappointed that his first festival season won't be happening (phew) but is rather pleased that our annual camping trip with friends might not go ahead in July Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/03/2020 08:29

With Diana though, isn't that what everyone wore in the 80s? I don't remember very much of it as I was a child but I'm sure my mum and her friends wore similar dresses etc and they weren't that much older than her.

Queen, I'm so sorry to hear about your wedding. The whole situation is completely surreal. It's hard to know what to say because I can't quite process that it's real.

I loved Diana's dress too, I remember her stepping out of the carriage with that voluminous skirt and thinking 'now that's a fairytale princess!'.

Seeing the photo reminds me that the bridesmaid you can see beside Sarah Chatto is India Hicks. She has a great podcast with her mother Pamela, Mountbatten's daughter who tells the most entertaining stories. Might be a bit of distraction for these crazy times.

I'm rewatching The Crown with teenage dd who hasn't seen it before. It's great escapism.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/03/2020 11:00

Oh I love Lady Pamela, listening to her is like going back in time as not even HM talks like that anymore!

Sorry to hear that your wedding may have to be postponed. Thanks

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/03/2020 11:57

Queen Sorry to hear that your wedding may have to be postponed.

Speaking of Lady Pamela, I recommend her memoir Daughter of Empire.

derxa · 19/03/2020 11:59

Loving the Diana pics. I'm another fan of her wedding dress. So much so that mine was similar in style albeit thousands of pounds cheaper and not designed by the Emmanuels Grin That was my wedding era and so many friends had dresses like that. < sniffs tearfully >

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/03/2020 12:05

I think Diana's dress is just so iconic that in a way it just transcends style and taste. It may well be the most famous wedding dress of all time! What happened to it btw? Is it on display at Althorp?

Sorry to hear about your wedding worries and woes Queen, such horrible uncertain times for us all.

AdaColeman · 19/03/2020 12:13

Harry owns the wedding dress now, as her personal belongings eventually reverted to Harry & Will.
