Ha ha some of my aunts gave out similar advice - I'll try and remember some of it!

A Christmas carol service can make me cry (and I believe Richard Dawkins has said much the same thing). It goes straight to the part of my brain that would dearly love to believe there is something more to life. The problem is, I just don't, hence the tears.

And my next post will be about clothes I promise.

flo, me too, I love a Carol service! Beautiful music, communal spirit and nostalgia definitely all work together for me. I've seen Richard Dawkins speak, he was actually very quiet and measured, as well as very intelligent.

Welcome CisCity, I'm trying to remember if there were any other (dodgy) gems from my grandmother or great aunt. My mum told me that the shorter the skirt the bigger the knickers Grin, and also taught me how to get out of a car in a mini skirt without flashing them (a woman of the 60s).

banivani · 11/03/2020 08:30

Thank you all for kind words about my blouse! I'm struggling to get dressed at the moment I hate all my clothes, all my trousers have something wrong with them and the only two pairs that fit perfectly are the same shape and I'm booooored. So the fecking blouse is the only highlight and I'm not adventurous enough to vary it.

Red I love your shirt dress, you'll get lots of wear out of that.

My first pregnancies I wore a sort of tube fit long jersey dress (an offer from a "posh" range H&M had at the time that I still miss, don't know if anyone remembers it, they had a section of the shop done up in dark wood?). It was great.

I'd like to add this to the thread

XingMing · 11/03/2020 09:41

Genius, bani! Absolutely priceless...... I love them, and can't wait for the uni fly. Maybe in another colour...

banivani · 11/03/2020 11:35

Hey, what's wrong with #greb?

Most of the time I think SNL is a bit shit, but then they come up with stuff like this :D

Redandblue11 · 11/03/2020 17:10

Grin priceless LOL

quirkychick · 11/03/2020 17:48

Grin bani that's very funny. I quite like the #greb though.

Your shirt is really lovely too, I forgot to say.

We went to Tesco's today and I think everyone is sitting out the coronavirus on pasta, toilet roll and soap. There wasn't a lot of any and lots of empty shelves. Lots of signs saying that you could only have 5 of certain items. One man was stopped trying to buy half a trolley of fairy liquid! Dp shops like it's the armegeddon at the best of times, so we're usually pretty well stocked up (we're going to get a free standing pantry soon to accommodate some of it, I'm all about the storage atm).

botemp · 11/03/2020 18:04

Sorry, I'm that person, I've never gotten what people like so much about SNL and I'm failing with this too Confused I mean I'm all for pointing out the hypocrisy of performative wokeness by exploitive global enterprises but this just seems to be mostly about making fun of 'funny' trousers (which I quite like) 🤷 also have never understood the fuss about Ryan Gosling 🤷🤷

Attempting some fashion talk distraction whilst trying to ignore pandemic developments. I'd like some sandals that are a little bit more supportive/able to withstand long periods of walking (as the cabin fever is getting to me and I'm looking forward to a virus free summer with lots of outdoor activities- I accept it may not turn out that way but I need something to look forward to with all travel plans cancelled/still unbooked for the next six months and even beyond now) that are not room 101 worthy. But is it really just a choice of Tevas, Fit Flops (sp?), or Birkenstocks?

Ancient Greek Sandals has a comfort line which aren't completely hideous, bit of a 90s vibe which look ok in black but not in other colours and would prefer something neutral (as in fade away in the whole rather than contrast on my body). Any other ideas?

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 11/03/2020 19:17

If I remember well from last year you were never a Birkenstock’s fan , right Bo?
I quite like them personally, I always found them very supportive and nice looking (I have an old air with just one band across).
From fitlops (sp) I only tried trainers type thing and my mum has a flipflop type model. I am not convinced how they look tbh.
The trainers I had used to be comfy, nothing amazing though but I think nowadays they have a lot of improved models .
I saw the last Karen Brit chick video and she recommended these sandals similar looking to the Tevas but chunkier, not my cuppa at first sight but who knows.. might be good?
I am dreaming of long summers in sundresses and sandals spending my days free of viruses.

botemp · 11/03/2020 19:40

I'm not a fan of most sensible summer footwear as they're quite light, so I end up awakening my Asian DNA and shuffle forward in them instead of walking properly as they don't roll all that nicely IME which is not all that great for posture or feet.

I think the Karen Britchick ones were from Dr Martens, chunky and gladiator style, can't really do chunky (makes my legs look heavy and shorter). I might get away with a gladiator style in a colour that doesn't contrast too highly, but it's not like I can walk far in those without constantly having to refasten them...

OP posts:
XingMing · 12/03/2020 10:26

This will be the third summer for my sensible walking sandals. They are so comfortable that I think I'd replace them regardless, but it doesn't hurt that the general style is quite of the moment and the putty colour goes with most of what I regularly wear (as planned). Conventionally pretty they are not.

Here's the bag I bought at the weekend. It's a bit battered, and completely unbranded but great leather and a good size.

quirkychick · 12/03/2020 13:52

Haha, I'm watching KarenBritChick and the Dr Martens now Grin I do really like them. But I do like a chunky shoe/boot/sandal, probably because I have quite long legs and I think they balance out my inverted triangle shape. I have worn fitflops in the past due to foot issues. They were the original quite sporty ones, they do take some getting used to as you use your muscles a bit differently (I'm not convinced they tone your legs more, if you're walking enough to make any difference you're probably toning them anyway, but I did pull my back a few times with them). The fitflops did last years, though, I think they have better styles now though.

quirkychick · 12/03/2020 13:53

Oh, Xing, nice bag. I had a red version like that in the nineties, from NineWest, I think.

banivani · 12/03/2020 21:22

Bo, I don’t really understand SNL either. I’ve watched so much of it and I just don’t laugh, but now and again it’s very funny. I think part of the funny is that the woke people wouldn’t wear something like that even though it genuinely is norm-defying. Making fun of current pet phrases is quite daring of them I thought!

Today I wore the nature colours - pic attached. I feel so wrong in this (but I wore it because late for train). I think cropped trousers just are not for me and I was really keen on the idea first. They make me feel proportionally off. That’s why they’re badly pressed, I was thinking of letting the hem down. They’d be short still but not cropped iyswim. Also yes yes they’re not fitting great. Bad buy really 🙄 I need to accept that Cos trousers don’t fit me well.

Obv I covered it all up with a black cardigan haha.

H&M have some new collection out with dresses and there’s a broderie anglaise patterned one that I just love the fabric of. Love it! It’s very ay caramba though which isn’t me. So sad.

Xing I love your bag, it looks great! Hope you get good wear out of it.

First of, the colour combo looks fab Bani
I see what you mean with regards to the shape but I am thinking if a non figure hugging top and depends on the shoes/boots worn it might be a different story.
Will a shirt look good? crisp white?

Floisme · 13/03/2020 09:45

Oh I enjoyed that SNL clip - I have zero tolerance for wokery even if I do like funny trousers.

bani I may be a huge fan of cropped trousers but I also think they need a bit of skin on show. This must be the third or fourth winter that I've tried to make them work with boots but they just don't do it for me. But a flash of ankle can transform them in my opinion. I can't see what's badly fitting unless they're pulling at the crotch but I put that down to having your hand in your pocket?

H&M dress not my thing but very lovely.

Nice looking bag Xing.

I temporarily laid off from the austerity after spotting some Whistles barrel leg jeans: £25 plus a pack of Dylon. They were a kind of bilious lime green, which I assume was a seasonal colour last summer or the summer before? It'll be fine, I thought, they're not next to my face. Well it wasn't fine, hence the Dylon. I went for a deep brown as I thought there was too much yellow in them for a denim blue to work. They're in the washing machine as I write. Maybe they'll come out greb Grin

Redandblue11 · 13/03/2020 09:46

Is that HM cotton? I would have been all over something like that in the past (I still quite like it in a way) but it does fit right with my current state of mind of buying things that I will actually wear loads.

Redandblue11 · 13/03/2020 09:48

It does Not fit right with...
I think you understand what I am trying to say?

banivani · 13/03/2020 10:02

floisme Maybe they'll come out greb hahahaha

Red I don't do crisp white. Wink Agree that the figure hugging doesn't feel good (that top doesn't feel good really but I haven't quite downgraded it to pyjama satus yet(. Am wearing the trousers today with poofier blousier top in paisley orange colour which feels a little better. Am inclined to agree with Flo that cropped looks better with skin but then WHY are these trousers made in wool flannel because if it's warm enough for skin I'm not fecking wearing wool flannel.

Of course I'm not wearing good shoes sigh my ankle boots show a bit of sock and thus my leg is being cut into bits. I do have one pair of tall boots but they have a heel and I can't face it.

Red No, the H&M dress is polyester, so we're safe from desire Grin

Floisme · 13/03/2020 10:24

Agree bani - I found some Cos cropped wool trousers last year and thought I'd got myself a bargain but I've worn them once. They cost less than a tenner but still annoying. They're a nonsense, unless you travel by limo. How long would they be if you turned the hem down?

What a shame about that dress. It would have looked - and felt - lovely in a cotton broderie, not on me but on someone else.

banivani · 13/03/2020 10:51

I think my picture shows the stitching of the hem. So half of that could maybe be turned down? I'd like all of it but I want them hemmed. Option would be attaching funky ribbon to make them longer à la my youth when we did that to jeans. Go all in as art teacher. (actually attaching a satin edge could work!)

Floisme · 13/03/2020 10:59

If it was me I'd probably go for un-hemmed. But then I'm a slob.
I'm sure I've seen some on the high street with a deep turnup in a contasting colour and fabric - I'll try and remember.

quirkychick · 13/03/2020 11:17

I like that length, but agree with flo, that it usually works better in warmer weather with trainers/bare ankles. Would a shirt or wrapover ballet top work better on top? I love the colour combo too Grin.

botemp · 13/03/2020 11:21

It's very chatty on here today what happened to ambitions of world peace and all that jazz?, is everyone condemned to WFH now? We're heading into stricter measures, announced yesterday afternoon, supermarket was absolutely ransacked today even though there's no need so much for our level headed reputation. I've had to buy my second choice Leksands thanks to the panic buyers as that's all that was being restocked Envy
