That anecdote is priceless 🤣 but very fitting with these times to uplift the assistant in statue form, so very visionary.

Ah Changing Rooms. Remember when every pregnant person got out some bandages and plaster and made a cast off their body and hung it up in the dining room to show off at dinner parties. Eat your heart out Demi Moore and your tasteful nudes 😘 (whatever happened to dinner parties, btw, they were always more of a thing over on your side of the pond, but they were a thing THING and I don't hear that much about them anymore).

What's wrong with Rieker sandals? I love mine so much that I bought an identical replacement pair for those bought two years ago and worn out over the many miles XingDog and I have walked together. Nothing better in summer!

banivani · 18/06/2020 16:42

I have a friend who looks great in Rieker sandals and owns the look, but I find them very unstylish - frumpy for lack of a better word, in general. A lot of visibile stitching, unevenly coloured leather (to look "organic"), soles that are fake printed to look "natural". It completely throws me off - for example I quite like these www.riekershop.se/rs_D3653-68_Gul but then I notice the stitching around the sole and go nah unsure. :( Ha, but now I noticed these and I actually quite like them www.riekershop.se/rs_63694-68_Gul

Apparently I have a thing for yellow? I also quite like these www.riekershop.se/rs_63663-24_Brun - have been looking at them before but the velcro made me iffy but if we're pro velcro now I feel much calmer (remember, I am not an independent thinker).

But most Rieker I see is like this www.riekershop.se/rs_65596-80_Vit or like this www.riekershop.se/rs_64573-33_Rod or like this www.riekershop.se/rs_67958-26_Gra and I am not pro. It'd take more ironic wearing than I can muster. A bit too German.

XingMing · 18/06/2020 16:50

bani, I like the second and last of your links, but I was thinking of mine which are more like Tevas open hiking sandals. They manage to make my (fairly wide) feet look quite dainty somehow.

banivani · 18/06/2020 16:51

Ah yeah that's a look in itself. I can't master it. ;)

btw what is Chinese blue stone. off to google that.

Floisme · 20/06/2020 11:20

See this is why I haven't bought new sandals in years, despite badly needing some. I just find tracking them down exhausting and tedious and then I wear them for what - 3 weeks. So instead I order boots from the Toast sale - very nice and, as I had hoped, slightly higher than most ankle boots. They're now out of stock but I posted a pic on the Toast thread.

And now I've ordered these Toast trousers which is partly random comfort buying but they're also a possible replacement for my vintage Armani Annie Hall chinos which are starting to look a bit threadbare - I've a bad feeling that one day I'll get them out of the washing machine and they'll have worn through.

In sewing news, I've cut out the Merchant and Mills Camber top but as a T shirt (not dress) and I've extended the sleeves to below the elbow. I'm using some end-of-roll linen that I bought before lockdown, so not a toile but if it all goes pear shaped there's no great harm done. Mind you at this rate it'll be winter before it's finished.

Redandblue11 · 20/06/2020 13:09

Those trousers are very you Flo, great choice.

I feel left out with you all sharing your sewing.

Excited as now we can visit English heritage places so we are off to a garden, they give you a slot so is not like before where you could freely roam the whole day but I hope is still nice. The weather is nice so I have a bit of Japanesse vibe I think , denim chloe top and emin and Paul cream trousers (not dissimilar to the toast ones Flo shared, but a bit longer)

Floisme · 20/06/2020 13:26

They might be too bulky round the tum - a lot depends on the fabric and how the pleats fall. And I'm not sure about the sateen finish either but can't see it properly onscreen. But, if they work, it'll be great cos I love the old Armanis but I'm starting to get nervous in case I put a knee through them.

quirkychick · 20/06/2020 16:36

Oh, nice trousers, flo. Toast have some lovely boots and shoes. I think with sandals, I try to buy a decent pair every summer to add to my small collection. At one point I had hardly any decent ones at all. I could probably do with some covered summer shoes, too though.

botemp · 20/06/2020 18:15

Trousers look good Flo, if you ever decide to make a dress version of the camber the merchant and mills Californian denim is really nice for it. It's quite lightweight and stiff at first but after two washes it's like a lovely chambray, soft but still some structure.

I've also found a new supplier of designer deadstock at really reasonable prices. I've ordered a bunch of samples, so will report back. But if it's really good I'm not sure I'll tell anyone

I'm still looking at summer shoes too. Third year of looking and not buying, I think. I had a try on with the Saint Laurent nu pieds again the other day as I really like them but my feet are just not wide enough for them. Sigh.

OP posts:
banivani · 21/06/2020 20:57

Flo I hope the trousers work out - but will confess to being a bit wary. They do look a little bit worrisome around the tummy (ie like the sort of cut that makes me look like a little round fat man from 1947). Fingers crossed!
Had to google Emin and Paul - I like the cuts but they do seem like clothes for thin people. Hard to tell with dearth of photos harumph. Do you have a photo of yourself Red?

I really like the Nu Pieds but haha not in my budget. Also frankly rather flat, I need to be careful with my fecking useless feet. 😒 I’ve been looking at the attached copycat Vagabonds since last year (copycat + ankle strap). But wary of those too because flat. They look so poorly made in a close up pic though! They also do a non-strap version I noticed, attaching them too. Facebook keeps recommending me sandals from laidbacklondon.com/ - I like the artisanal aspect, if genuine. They also recommend me a lot of Finnish designers atm, florals galore. Hyvää and all that.

I’ve realised that I would really really like to get something that fits me on the shoulders. And that this will never happen unless I make it. It just won’t. It’s all dropped shoulders and if not then it doesn’t fit over the bosom.

I've tried the Tia with ankle strap before, yes they're pretty basic looking up close, leather isn't the nicest and marks easily. I needed a half size and they made my feet look proportionally small, something was off about it, and heel support not that great. The nu pieds do a better job, they do have a little heel and it's supportive but not super hard either where the Tia may as well be completely flat.

I've been eyeing these from Definery (if you have very small feet or larger, Yoox has quite a few for a good bit less, the only ones in my size are a questionable aqua colour) in the smooth leather brownish colour. They look to be a double layer of thick-ish leather (with hopefully some padding in between) and then a small heel and separate leather sole. Promising for a thin flat with a bit of relative comfort in theory, but I can't make out if the buckle is adjustable or just decoration. Never heard of the brand but the stockists carrying it give some confidence.

There's some interesting things I've learned about shoulders and padding in my tailoring reading. You basically have the normal shoulder pad and then depending on if you have rounded or stooped shoulders you add a little triangular panel at the back of front (or both if you want to look like a body builder on steroids, which was very popular with men in the 1930s apparently 💪). I've yet to try it (I'm slightly rounded, really depends on how well I'm keeping up Pilates) as I've no idea what ice wool is called in Dutch (I just get knitting yarn from Iceland 🤣) but it does seem like a very simple and easy fix.

You may be right bani - some of the reviews say they're too bulky. But I find pleats are quite unpredictable so worth a punt. And the fact that it seems to be a single deep pleat makes me cautiously hopeful as this seems to work better on me for some reason.

banivani · 22/06/2020 10:12

Yes it's so interesting the things you can do with good tailoring, and the more you read about it the more you start to realise what a shambles the current clothing industry is. They don't even state what sort of sleeve is on a garment any more because no-one will know or care. I've just realised that probably a seam fitting neatly on my shoulder helps make me look less broad-backed? But combined with needing bust space it's like hen's teeth. So it's a hard theory to test.

I looked closely at the Nu Pieds and you're right, that's a significant pad that is probably more comfortable. I still can't afford them though so ;)

Today I'm wearing ocre yellow linen trousers and a deep brick t-shirt because I was in a hurry this morning and at least ketchup and mustard go. But I'm disliking it immensely.

XingMing · 23/06/2020 13:00

I am happy. I am a sunbeam. The weather is warm again and I can wear my lemon shorts with an acid yellow Breton. Very Stella Jean.

Redandblue11 · 23/06/2020 15:49

I will try to post a photo of my emin and Paul trousers at some point In the next few days Bani .
Loving the weather too ☀️

botemp · 23/06/2020 16:27

Well I'm doing the usual of living in perpetual fear of the sun and I've been working on a winter coat (toile thankfully) it's not that hot yet 23°, it'll be 30° the next few days onwards. I've booked lots of museum visits (for the air conditioning) as we were supposed to be on holiday this week. I'm also refusing to cook, not sure how long that will last though.

Scandalising the pope as usual with the original pope scandalising dress.

I remember that dress Bo!
I am sporting a jumpsuit, one I found before lockdown in a charity shop.
Yes, I still remember the first time I got a jumpsuit as an adult thanks to this thread. So many things I do now thanks to this thread Smile

botemp · 24/06/2020 04:46

Was that first one the Michael Kors jumpsuit you found in a shop that was closing down?

banivani · 24/06/2020 16:19

Xing, that sounds amazing, you sound so pleased. Grin

It's hotter than hell here today. I tried the deodorant on my inside thighs trick to stop rubbing but it didn't work that well. My linen shirt dress from Uniqlo came and it's ...ok. Oddly too big. Since returns aren't free I'll keep it, it's nonetheless handy for work, but it's depressing that clothes with a good fit are impossible to find. A little better with the belt but it's shorter than the blue one I own (rayon), so I don't get the djellaba effect I like about the first one. Instead it's more classic office wear shirt dress but too oversize.

banivani · 24/06/2020 16:22

Oh, meant to post that these sandals popped up in a blog I read today

www.botkier.com/products/zuri-twist-slide-cognac

They look nice but ship to Europe for loadsamoney so no go!

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's project of fixing up my sister's shady balcony so she can sit there. It's a decor project involving fake plants due to green thumb incompetence on her part, so if anyone has ideas let me know...

XingMing · 24/06/2020 16:52

The do look good, but shipping from the US is stupid$$, and then the import duties and VAT...

Such a pity Uniqlo sizing is so erratic.

I've just been to the posh frock shop because DSIL says that DMIL needs a sunhat so I took pictures of all the options and WhatsApped them to show her. It would be her 91st birthday present, and I think it will be the first time she's had a nice shady hat, ever.

banivani · 25/06/2020 08:37

Xing, that sounds great, I hope you find something she loves.

Shipping from the US is indeed stupid and I won't be doing it, but the quality of those sandals looked miles better than the Vagabonds. Je remarque, hein. (To quote a tv series about Swiss learner drivers Isaw years ago that inexplicably never made it into the pop cultural vocabulary.)

botemp · 25/06/2020 12:57

I think ancient Greek sandals has a similar pair To those and they'd be a similar price in the sales.

I feel I should be doing my devil's advocate duty and grumble about keeping something you don't really love to save on shipping costs 👆 just call me Mrs kondo, have you seen my new overpriced online shop yet?

OP posts:
banivani · 25/06/2020 13:02

This is absolutely true Bo, however the eternal problem with online shopping is that you don't know you love that item until it arrives, when you find out that it isn't at all quite right and you can't return it. Personally I haven't bought the Vagabonds I don't think I will be either because the closeups really put me off.

I've booked an anti-body test for Covid for next week and if it turns out I have anti-bodies I might brave the over-full shoe shops. If not, I'm isolating myself harumph.
