Is this look too young for me?

A friend commented that stitching down the side of trousers is a youth trend and she sneered at these trousers on a shopping trip. I work from home and always dress casually (am 48) - I loved the way they look but obviously they are expensive and what she said has me worried about buying them and then not wearing them because of what she said. Are they a bit try hard?

Do you like it? Do you feel good in it? Go for it. My mums about 5 years older than you and wears similar, she’s got a sharp bob cat eye specs and leather jacket! All the best

JoanieCash · 22/01/2020 07:35

I remember I saw Kirsty Wark wearing similar on Newsnight. Go for it

MadamNoo · 22/01/2020 07:36

Rubbish! She sounds a bit mean and insecure. Me and em isn’t a particularly ‘young’ brand. I’m your age and would wear trousers or joggers with a side stripe.

MaxAmount · 22/01/2020 07:42

My friend means well but she can be a bit "over-honest" and is definitely a more conservative dresser but even when I mentioned this to dd who is 16 she paused and said "maybe" when I probed further she back-tracked into her usual "wear whatever makes you feel good". It had me doubting myself - am I out of touch? Hmm

I don't buy into the dated notion of women being too old to wear certain kinds of clothes. Wear what you want and sod what anyone else thinks. If you like them and feel good in them, buy them and enjoy them. For what it's worth, I like them a lot and think they're perfect for a more luxe casual look.

crosspelican · 22/01/2020 07:46

Not at all! And - well, in the best way possible, Me + Em is hardly going to do you wrong in this regard, is it? It’s like m&s Autograph (in a good way!) or Mint Velvet.

I think your friend is the one who is out of touch, and to be fair, a 16yo isn’t going to know what is in style fir anybody older than Kylie Jenner.

They are great trousers and your friend is a (dowdy) cow for making you second guess yourself.

Livebythecoast · 22/01/2020 07:49

They are fab!. I'm your age and I would definitely wear them.
I too have a 16 yr old DD. If I asked her and she thought they were inappropriate for my age she would eye roll and say 'just no Mum ' so seeing as your DD wasn't horrified then that's a good indication!.
Buy them, wear them and enjoy them Smile

crosspelican · 22/01/2020 07:51

I also love your friend saying that stitching down the side is a “youth trend”! 😁 It’s like in Georgette Heyer novels when the heroine is considered a bit “fast” for having military style edging on her pelisse. You’re not exactly wearing a BooHoo mini dress & heels to Costa!

baileysandamincepie · 22/01/2020 07:54

Side stripe joggers have been around for a good few years, and as such have moved through the "on trend" phase when the 20 somethings would have wanted them and are now firmly established in the mainstream market. My rule of thumb is if M&S stock anything, then the trend has peaked and it's on it's way down the other side.

I'd go for the M&S version if you're not sure. Me and Em are better quality, but def not £90 quality, the sizing is very hit and miss, and exchanges and returns take forever as they are a very small operation behind the scenes.

Floisme · 22/01/2020 08:08

I doubt whether many young people can afford Me and Em. They are fine.

Rumnraisin · 22/01/2020 08:10

Oh my - side switching on trousers, worn by an older woman - how inappropriate!! I think your “friend” is the out of touch one with that attitude.
Love them btw

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/01/2020 08:10

I am about your age. I would wear them. Buy and Enjoy! And tell your friend to Hold the fashion ‘advice’, lol

justilou1 · 22/01/2020 08:13

I’m 47 and would wear it. Do you have the figure? Does she?

MandalaYogaTapestry · 22/01/2020 08:19

They look nice, wear them!

CountFosco · 22/01/2020 08:19

I'm your age and I'd wear them. My eldest is 12 and we currently both have black parkas and DMs. I had the DMs first, she had the parka first (but will grow out of it soon). Wear what you want, TNMA had a pair of M&S chinos with a glitter stripe down the side a few years ago and she is both older than us and definitely not chasing her youth in the way she dresses (she describes her style as gentlewoman

Buggedandconfused · 22/01/2020 08:21

Wtaf? Wear what the he’ll you like! I’m 52 and add trendy clothes to my wardrobe to keep youthful! Fuck her, age knows absolutely nothing!

Buggedandconfused · 22/01/2020 08:22

Sorry not age *she

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2020 08:23

Wear whatever you like and feel nice in,am I missing something though, they are very ordinary joggers aren't they?

MaxAmount · 22/01/2020 08:26

Oh no the M&S ones are not me at all! - it's the military/combat/jogger combo that appeals, the back pockets that break up the arse area, the thick chevron fabric that doesn't go baggy at the knees.

I don't know what figure you need? I am about a size 12 and 5ft 9in.

TheFaerieQueene · 22/01/2020 08:28

I’m a couple of years older and wore almost the identical outfit on Saturday night.

MaxAmount · 22/01/2020 08:29

Does she have the figure? - she's a size 6 hourglass on a good day, size 8 if she gains a couple of lbs. She's just a bit blunt - always has been, but I just wondered whether she was right, the moment of doubt when I'm buying something so expensive - but I loved them before they went into the sale.

Theroigne · 22/01/2020 08:31

Bollocks to that. I’m 44 and live a side stripe!

Theroigne · 22/01/2020 08:31

*Love

FlorenceLyons · 22/01/2020 08:33

They're fab, and I love Me&Em. I have some similar trousers and am 46.

Theroigne · 22/01/2020 08:34

Have you ordered them op? Because they’re only available in a 16 now.
