Most money you've ever spent on one make-up item?

I bought a Lancome lipstick the other day, it's matte navy blue and I'm going to wear it to work tomorrow. It's £25.50, beating my Huda Beauty Electric Obsessions eyeshadow palette by 50p. I am not a make-up snob by any stretch of the imagination, my usual go tos are Revolution and NYX. I've bought Smashbox eyeshadow sets in the past for £42 but they work out as quite good value.

I'm also slightly over-excited because it's my first 'proper' high end make-up thing from a posh brand and I'm really happy about it. (Weirdly L'Oreal own Lancome, Urban Decay and NYX, I own many lipsticks from the other three brands, including various shades of blue. Grin)

The pallettes look lovely but I seriously wouldn't have a clue how to use them! How do you all know what to do with which bit?Shock

lolaflores · 07/01/2020 14:44

@BigButtons...the joy of YouTube. Lots of tutorials and try outs. I recommend Raw Beauty Christie or samantha ravandhal for an expert walk through of all hourglass products then u just practise

BigButtons · 07/01/2020 14:58

Ooh fab thanks. I was was literally just searching YouTube about the ambient range. I just got dim light for a bargain on eBay and really love it- just dust it all over.
I’m all for spending money on decent products that do all the work did you!

babytantrums · 07/01/2020 17:37

Total make up snob. I love it. It brings me joy. £62 on chantecaille mascara- have introduced sooo many people to it & they now buy it too. Also chantecaille eyeshadows - about £42 for a single shadow. I also love hourglass powders. I spent about £66 on Tom ford foundation, but hated it.

Robstersgirl · 07/01/2020 17:46

EL Re nutriv foundation - £78. My son knocked it over in the bathroom and it smashed 3/4 full still. Angry
Even the lady on the EL counter looked gutted for me when I went in to buy ELDW as a replacement.

Nonotmenori · 07/01/2020 17:52

£65 on Guerlain primer. I went through bottles in a year. It does brighten my face up, but it's too expensive for just a primer.

DrKnickerbocker · 07/01/2020 18:12

£183 on La Praire Skin Caviar foundation Blush it's my favourite ever product

Second those saying Chanel tan de soleil- a beautiful product, I recommend that to everyone.

DrKnickerbocker I bought the same - bloody expensive caviar cream by La Prairie- it was so sparkly! Why do they put glittery bits in it... made me feel 13 (not look it, sadly).

Still on the hunt for a great foundation as I age at speed... you wear it everyday so cost per wear is actually pretty good. I wear powder and it’s ageing and I need a liquid cover!

Dizzywizz · 07/01/2020 21:48

Do you mean navy blue lipstick @SapphireSeptember?? I am very confused about that.

I have spent about £40 I think on benefit eye shadow pallet...it was my fave which was discontinued though 😭 when I emailed head office they sent me one for free which they had in their office 😊

millymoo1202 · 07/01/2020 22:37

Laura Mercier glow powder is most expensive single item, it’s fantastic. I bought the Anastasia pomade in Florida in July 2018 and still have half a pot and use nearly everyday, wouldn’t use anything else now. X

Thisenglishlife · 07/01/2020 23:28

Ooooh jumping on. Anybody with brown skin use hourglass products?

@RogueV I hope not, the founder has made racist and islamphobic remarks to her counter staff and customer.

RogueV · 07/01/2020 23:38

In 1972 I was persuaded to buy a small cream blusher by a glamorous beauty consultant in the unfortunately named Brown Muff department store in Bradford. I was a student and it cost £5 when my rent was £3.50 a week. I had to beg and borrow money to live on for a month, but it was wonderful and lasted 2 years. I have no idea, 48 years down the line, what it was called, but I have never spent that sort of money on make-up since (in fact my eye cream and serum now come from Poundland.....and are as good as some 15 times the price).

BigButtons · 08/01/2020 14:07

Well I'm impressed with the hourglass dim light.

Went to work having had a bad night's sleep with huge dark bags, badly concealed. Just a touch of eyeliner and mascara and the dim light .

I was told I looked very glamorous!

Thisenglishlife · 08/01/2020 18:13

@Daisymaybe60
Wow, that's over £66 by today's money - I'm glad you liked it though!

in the unfortunately named Brown Muff department store
Oh dear! 🤣

MakeMineALarge1 · 08/01/2020 18:32

Most expensive is probably a CT quad eyeshadow pallette, the pale colour is now down to the pan, the glitter shade was very much surface heavy so now not glittery, and I can't seem to get to grips with the other 2 colours.
I do however have a lip gloss in Walk of Shame which I love.

I sooooooooo want her pillow talk lipstick as well.

I recently bought a Bobbi Brown eye shadow crayon that is no better or worse than my Kiko up all night one, but the BB lipstick in red glitter is the bloody bees knees!

I am thinking I need the hourglass powder, but I am trying to save money hence now trying the N07 stay perfect foundation as a change to my ELDW.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 10/01/2020 01:50

I use Mac studio fix foundation which is about £27 a bottle. I also have a few of their lipsticks which are about £17 each. My mascara costs £22 normally (rollercurl by benefit) but got it on special offer last time and paid around £17 if I remember correctly.

Everything else I use is cheap. My favourite eyeshadow pallets are by Barry m. In the nude and fall in love never fail me and only cost about £7 each. I have a trail size (magazine freebie) of hula bronzer which I love and may end up buying when my small one runs out (eventually). Don’t know where my blush is from as the writings worn off the outside but I’m sure I got it in the ‘brand name make up in clear bags’ section of Poundland. Eyeliner is a basic cheap stick version that probably cost £1. Eyebrow pencil was probably around £5 and is a rimmel one. Don’t use concealer as they are always darker than my foundation (I’m super extra pale) don’t use highlighter either.

I’ve tried so many cheap products over the years that haven’t been quite right (particularly foundation) so I don’t mind spending a bit more on something decent that actually matches my shade. It’s cheaper in the long run as I’ve wasted so much money on stuff that’s only about 80% ok and then after a while I get fed up and go out looking for something else that might be a bit better (and end up buying that and repeat the whole process again). Then stuff goes off as it sits too long and gets binned.

mcvet · 12/01/2020 08:27

Did you say Navy blue lipstick ?

ihatethecold · 14/01/2020 09:20

I’ve never used powder. Do I need it?
My dd loves her face powder but she has oily skin.
I have normal skin and my make up seems to stay on ok.

What is the point of it?
Not trying to be funny but I just don’t understand. Confused

BunnytheBlueWhale · 14/01/2020 10:57

@ihatethecold It’s supposed to help keep oil at bay and keep your make up on but if you don’t need it then don’t use it

ihatethecold · 14/01/2020 11:06

Thanks BunnytheBlueWhale
You’ve probably just saved me a ton of money Grin

pinkytheunicorn · 14/01/2020 11:11

Urban Decay Naked palette and I've just bought a Victoria Beckham Beauty Bitten Lip Tint (£30) and I love it. Stays on for hours and is a gorgeous colour.

BigButtons · 14/01/2020 12:41

@ihatethecold
I have just got the hourglass dim light powder. It does far more than mattify my skin; it sort of puts me in soft focus. I want more hourglass stuff. It’s amazing!

ihatethecold · 14/01/2020 12:52

This thread is dangerous.

@BigButtons. I do have light brown skin. I can be sallow, especially in winter. I would prefer to buy a travel size first to test it out if possible
