Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

TS try the gloss over a pink lipstick that you like. The fenty one I have isn't really my colour by itself but over a blotted pink lipstick it's gorgeous.

Pupsiecola · 28/02/2020 08:19

I use a moisturiser over the top of the Timeless Vit C, with a drop of the PC Peptides Booster.

Very cute Client 😍

SallieSallow · 03/03/2020 18:54

Mint I used my Purito for work today. It goes on nicely, no smell, quite moisturising but sinks in well and seemed fine under makeup. I did notice my skin seemed a bit oilier than usual this afternoon but I was in a warm, stuffy office today so will keep monitoring that and will also try the Purito on it’s own rather than over moisturiser.

mintmagnummm · 03/03/2020 19:02

sallie today was third day of using my purito and I'm LOVING it so far!! I use it on top of moisturiser and under complexion rescue. I have everything crossed i continue to love it.

SallieSallow · 03/03/2020 21:36

Oh that’s great Mint hopefully you’ll keep on loving it Smile I do like it but think moisturiser plus Purito might be a bit too heavy for me. I’m going to try it tomorrow with no moisturiser underneath #living dangerously Grin

Karcheer · 04/03/2020 16:47

Back from my hols in the sun and back on the tret tonight, I cannot wait, my skin has been a mess since I stopped using it.

botemp · 04/03/2020 17:24

I lost the thread again BlushDaffodil since when do we have Daffodil emojisConfused it looks like a golden palm tree to me...

Lovely to see familiar faces popping up again. Pupsie, Cerave has recently released a BHA line, the cleanser may be good for your son?

Sallie, I wear the Purito sunscreen on its own, it's too much with a moisturiser underneath. It feels very similar to the Bioderma Cicabio SPF to me, I have to wear that on its own too.

SallieSallow · 04/03/2020 19:18

I’d completely missed the Daffodil emoji it doesn’t look much like a daffodil to me Hmm I agree Bo it’s like a mini golden palm tree.

I’ve got Purito on without moisturiser today and it’s been great, it was definitely too much using both. I don’t use moisturiser with bioderma cicabio either but I have been using it under frezyderm & skinaqua so guess I’d just got in the habit of using both.

Smellslikebiscuits · 04/03/2020 19:42

I’ve just done a Timeless shop for some of your recommendations @botemp. I have two quick questions - do you use the DHC as a first or second cleanse in the evening, and do you have a recommendation for an spf that’s easy to use over make-up during the day to top up. I’m currently using LRP creme gel or the shaka fluide in the morning, but I’m not topping up in the day.
Starting to wonder if, as we move to the summer, I top up during the day, accepting that I’ll then have to do a quick make up touch up too!
Thanks for all your input and info!

botemp · 04/03/2020 19:56

biscuits, dhc always as a first (sometimes only) cleanse.

In summer it depends on what SPF you need, I like the Bioderma water spray which is SPF 30 and can go over makeup without issue. The LRP SPF50 one I find quite greasy and not so friendly to makeup. It's not the best solution but if you're mostly indoors and just want to top up with something before getting lunch and are not on prescription retinoids it's better than nothing.

I tend to wear tinted sunscreen if I know I'll be outdoors a lot that I just top up and don't wear any other face products. Most of the time I consider it a good day in summer (an average day that's still mostly indoors) if I apply it in the morning and then reapply later in the day. You're better off focusing on getting the right amount on initially (by layering) than fretting about top ups which are always going to be less than ideal. I carry the Bioderma spray around just in case knowing it doesn't really do the necessary job but it's a better than nothing type scenario, a bit of peace of mind, if you will. Hopefully something new will get released this year with a higher SPF that's still nice to use.

And invest in a good sun protective hat, will always trump sunscreen as a first line of defence.

OP posts:
Smellslikebiscuits · 04/03/2020 20:02

I will definitely try the spf spray, that might be just the thing. I do use a couple of layers of spf in the morning, as I’ve been using Retirides for the last year or so, so I am trying to be as careful as possible.
I do have a quick glance in the mirror at lunch time, so should be able to fit in a quick spritz!
I do like the tinted Shaka fluide and find at the weekend that gives me just enough colour, along with a touch of blusher, that it’s job done.
Looking forward to trying out the Vit C when it arrives.

botemp · 04/03/2020 20:10

Just for reference it's this one but it looks to be sold out almost everywhere so 🤞it's getting replaced with a higher SPF without being crap rather than permanently discontinued Sad

Yes, tinted sunscreen with a cream blush (which is usually worn off by the time you top up) is usually doable. I don't tend to use the tinted SPF to top up with though, just pat on a clear chemical one as otherwise it gets a little too full coverage. Pat some more cream blush on and you're set.

Thanks Bo. Wondered where you were!

I'm nervous about Cerave cleansers as the one I tried burned my skin during use and left it tingly after. You think this one you speak of is worth a go?

(I have used the Cerave Night Lotion for years though so not off the brand altogether).

SallieSallow · 04/03/2020 20:26

I hope that Bioderma spray spf doesn’t get discontinued as I really like it, I use the la Roche posay one as well but find it’s got a very strong smell. I live in the frozen north and don’t spend much time outdoors/see much sun even during summer so just use my main spf in the morning and top up with a spray if going outside for lunch or sitting in a beer garden after work etc. I’m planning to keep using tret this summer though so might need to rethink that, I’m looking at powder sunblocks but not sure if they’d give enough protection.

botemp · 04/03/2020 20:30

My main concern with the Cerave BHA one is that it would potentially be drying since it's foaming, especially since he doesn't use moisturiser. He'd really need to start using that too but generally it's a really well liked cleanser for white and blackheads, you'd have to hold your nerve a bit at first though as it could potentially cause some purging depending on how congested he is currently. Potentially start slow and use it every other day at first.

Otherwise it would be Paula's choice BHA, the gel might work best for him as it's the easiest to use.

OP posts:
botemp · 04/03/2020 20:34

No to powders, it's really dangerous to breathe them in and they don't provide good coverage anyhow. There's a reason why the EU won't allow their sale, they don't pass the tests.

I have it easy since I work from home, I tend to slap on SPF in the morning and usually don't need to leave for meetings or whatever until later in the day so reapply then and then do my makeup. It's a lot more difficult to work around when you do makeup since first application.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 04/03/2020 21:05

I did not know that Bo re powder SPFs and the EU Shock there’s quite a few on amazon.

I work from home quite a bit but the days I do go into the office/client premises I’m out from early. I definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable going without makeup, especially not for client meetings.

botemp · 04/03/2020 21:14

It's considered a category 2 carcinogen in powder form over 1% (a liquid sunscreen will have anything from 5-10% or even more, mineral makeup probably uses less than this so probably 'safe' but I personally wouldn't use it). I think you can sell it but it would be pretty much like cigarettes, huge labels saying essentially this will kill you, do not inhale.

I'm really enjoying the Superdrug pure hydrating serum. Using it in the AM under alpha h essential moisture (tret face!) and for £3... I love it

Pupsiecola · 05/03/2020 09:25

Thanks Bo. He has dabbled with using my Cosrx Oil Free Birch Sap Lotion but not on his nose and it stings the sides of his nose which are quite dry.

I feel like he needs to try a very basic routine and he wouldn't be opposed to it. I'm just a bit lost as to what to try because I've never had an issue with blackheads or spots generally, even as a teenager. And all we've been trying is what I already have, which may not be suitable.

I'm happy to buy him his own products. Do you think changing his pillow daily would be worth a try too?

botemp · 05/03/2020 09:37

If even the birch sap is stinging then he sounds pretty sensitive so a basic routine would be good but it's unlikely to do much for the blackheads, but perhaps that'll be less of an issue if the rest of the skin calms down. So Avene extremely gentle Cleanser and a Toleriane moisturiser, either the ultra line or the sensitive line depending on how he reacts to them. The ultra should be gentler or the sensitive fluid but I'm not sure that's still being sold. For a gentle BHA you could consider the Paula's Choice 1% calm. I've used it before, it's gentle and does the job but not the amazing job of the other BHAs. I'd be tempted to just book him into an extraction facial (dermalogica or similar) once and then maintain with the PC calm 1%, but get the basics sorted first.

Pillow cases, every day would be excessive, but every other day could be helpful since he sleeps on his face. Also the material of the pillow may be an issue too, synthetic pillows don't allow heat to escape well and a higher body/skin heat leads to more skin issues.

pupsie avene have a moisturiser that would be perfect for your son (I'm not a fan of lrp toleriane personally) its avene tolerance extreme EMULSION. I have some left in tube (I stopped using it only because it wasn't moisturising enough for my skin) I'd be happy to send it to you so he could try it before buying?
