Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@sallie do you use anything underneath you're bare minerals complexion rescue?

botemp · 11/02/2020 19:45

I think I'm probably too late to chime in on SpaceNK now. Probably for the best considering my mascara habit. Did you get anything Tsm?

Hi again Sammi. Are you getting a series of peels or just the one? It's not really my business, but I'm surprised they're okay with you using such fragrant products with the peels when they prefer you using a lower % vitamin c serum. Post peel you'll be quite sensitive for awhile. I have to be realistic that 5 stone is a lot in a short period of time and skin just isn't going to be able to keep up with that, not even prescription tretinoin (and going in heavy isn't going to make much of a difference). Skin laxity is something you really need to tackle with treatments (like a series of peels, laser, radio frequency, wtc.) rather than OTC skincare tbh. It's expensive and painful but otherwise it's just waiting out time.

I don't have a dupe for Skinceuticals serum 10, but when I was introducing tretinoin my dermatologist suggested switching to serum 10 too but I still had quite a bit of Timeless CE ferulic (which is 20%) left and it would go off by the time I got back to it so I watered it down by using half the normal drops with a few drops of a HA serum and that worked for me. Not a perfect solution but to bridge a gap it works fine, I'm assuming you can go up once you've fully recovered from the peel(s).

Mint I just slap it on over spf, though try and leave about 5 mins in between. I’ve given up on primers as never found one that does anything. I use hourglass ambient light powder over the top and sometimes hourglass mineral veil and/or or urban decay setting spray but usually only for going out at night. I really like it but I find it’s slightly lighter coverage than NARS TM. I still really like and use that too but think the complexion rescue is better at this time of year for me, it’s a bit more moisturising and less likely to cling to any flaky patches.

Sammi nothing to add to what Bo has said I don’t know enough about peels to comment, but congratulations on the weight loss, I know you had surgery but that’s still amazing especially with giving up smoking too Smile

mintmagnummm · 11/02/2020 21:41

sallie which spf are you using? I've been using neostrata sheer physical spf for ages, on my third bottle but for some reason this third bottle seems different, I've broken out a lot and it seems to have made my skin dry. Am having an spf break at mo but obviously need to find one asap. Tried the heliocare mineral spf but wasn't good for me at all. I got a sample of the complexion rescue because it cosmetics is just too heavy for me and the nars isn't sitting right lately and never been completely satisfied with the colour. I did try the complexion rescue years ago and hated it but my skin is a lot different now so I'll give it another shot. Stressing about spf now! I think I've tried the majority! Chemical seems to sting and irritate my eyes but the mineral ones are either really drying due to the zinc or too white or too orange if tinted etc etc.

SallieSallow · 11/02/2020 22:05

Mint I’m currently using either frezyderm (tinted and untinted) or skin aqua moisture milk, depends on where I’m going or what I’m doing but mainly skin aqua as it’s nice and moisturising for this time of year.

I was about to order this one to try this next but it’s gone out of stock Angry and not sure if there’s ingredients in it that you’ll react to.

Friends in the US swear by an SPF called Elta MD but it’s expensive/hard to find here.

SallieSallow · 11/02/2020 22:08

Your skin might be acting up due to the time of year Mint a few of us were complaining a couple of pages back about dryness and flaky patches, I was blaming mine on tret but think it’s just winter skin caused by the cold and wind outside then heating blasting inside.

ClientQueen · 11/02/2020 22:58

Escentual have 25% off any excuse so I purchased niod modulating glucosides which is meant to be good for sensitivity and irritation. In my head this meant it should be good for me with my tret use

mintmagnummm · 12/02/2020 05:57

sallie that spf sounds great doesn't it! I wonder how long until its back in stock. Yeah you're right about the weather and my skin, I'm also poorly at the moment which doesn't help.

SallieSallow · 12/02/2020 20:13

I’m keeping my eye on it Mint so will let you know if it comes back in stock, I put it in my basket ages ago and stupidly waited to see if I’d get a discount code and it sold out Sad

That NIOD thing sounds intriguing Client they do give their products some remarkable names Grin

ClientQueen · 12/02/2020 20:33

Yes I was trying to spell it to google reviews!

mintmagnummm · 12/02/2020 21:31

Sallie thank you. I'm trying not to look up that niod serum right now as I'm in a reckless mood lol.

EnidButton · 14/02/2020 01:53

Just saying hello as you've fallen off my TIO list. I haven't anything to report. Skin has settled down apart from slight peeling nose which is down to the weather etc like Sallie says. I also need to lay off the sugary snacks as they won't be helping. Otherwise I haven't much to add but like having you all at hand so hello! 👋 Grin

Hope you all have a lovely day and happy Valentine's day. ❤️

SallieSallow · 14/02/2020 18:38

Waving back to Enid 👋 and Happy Valentines Day to everyone ❤️

Karcheer · 17/02/2020 09:30

Morning all,

I lost you all!

Anyway found the thread again...

Just a quick question is this the best cerave moisturiser?

botemp · 17/02/2020 10:19

Karcheer, that's a body lotion, confusingly, I believe. It's this one.

Enid good to see you back again (as I have questions). My dermatologist mentioned collagen supplements I was all Shock I tell you, but I was pointed in the right direction of one that has actual research behind it (limited but enough to get a dermatologist on board apparently Hmm. It does sound ideal for me -skin elasticity, cellulite improvement in those under BMI of 25, but more importantly of improvement in hair health and density which was the main focus of why it came up. I do vaguely recall you taking it at some point, did it amount to anything? I'm told to look at verisol© collagen peptides only so if by some chance you took those I'd love to hear about it (also happy to hear non verisol experience).

In other news, I've ordered a new cheapo cleansing oil from Japan to try (needed to toss something in an Amazon JP order and this fit the bill) its the Kose Softmyo Speedy cleansing oil (mineral oil based which I've never really had an issue with as a cleanser but 🤞anyhow), it has great reviews and it's only €4 so here's hoping it's actually good...

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 17/02/2020 10:57

I need to repurchase the cerave moisturiser, I’m trying to find it in a larger size but having no luck, I don’t suppose you’ve encountered one anywhere Bo?

Interested to hear how you find the cleansing oil though I get on fine with the Simple one which is cheap and easily available here.

botemp · 17/02/2020 11:07

Only on iherb AFAIK, Sallie, about twice the size but with shipping etc. It'll probably come in the same price as two EU sized ones, I don't think they do the larger size here. They do do cheaper shipping on iherb but it takes at least two weeks IIRC.

If the Simple one was available here I'd give it a try, I really like the DHC a lot but a cheapie alternative is always welcome. The Kose has a very minimal INCI which does have some appeal.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 17/02/2020 11:15

Yes I liked DHC too but the simple works just as well for me, I think because it gets removed so thoroughly with the second cleanse pretty much any oil cleanser is probably going to do the same job.

I’ve found some cerave back on amazon again now at the larger 89ml size which works out at slightly better vfm, just reading the reviews to make sure it’s fresh stock. It’s not so much the price that bothers me as the constant re-ordering and dealing with the packaging etc as I get through a lot of this stuff Grin

Karcheer · 17/02/2020 12:27

Thanks @botemp I knew it might be the wrong one which was why I wanted to check. Ordered it now, thank you.

MoonlightMistletoe · 17/02/2020 19:30

Hello, I've just used the Avenue gentle lotion and I am extremely happy with it already!

I also have the Citoplast Baume B5 , May I ask what this is exactly used for ? I've just put it on like a face moisturiser is that ok?!

botemp · 17/02/2020 19:48

You're welcome Karcheer, Cerave really isn't the best at distinguishing their product names unfortunately.

Good to hear you're getting on well with the Avene cleanser Mistletoe. Cicaplast B5 is somewhat of a jack of all trades. It's a product specifically geared towards healing of the skin whether that be the inflammation left behind by a small spot or burns and even open wounds. It's fine to use as a moisturiser (when skin is stressed) or topically but it is a balm so it does tend to feel heavy and not everyone can therefore use it like that without breaking out. It is non comedogenic though, so generally speaking unproblematic but not guaranteed. Just keep an eye on it, specifically in clog prone areas, I think you mentioned nose and chin, any sight of little bumps or an increase in blackheads ease up or just keep using on the not so clog prone areas until your skin is feeling healthy again.

Jedstre · 17/02/2020 20:01

I’ve just started using the simple oil cleanser too Sallie after finishing the hado labo one which I liked. As you say, sort of much of a muchness as I always follow with a second cleanser (still using LRP cleanser that was bought in America, similar to cerave with ceramides and niacinamide)
Cicaplast has been wonderful for a patch of eczema DH has. I buy a big tube now.

EnidButton · 17/02/2020 20:31

bo It was a collagen powder I tried. The add to water or smoothies type. I didn't use it for long and I can't remember why I stopped but it was definitely because it had some kind of side effect that I didn't like. I'll ask DH when he gets on as his memory god these things is better than mine. If I had to guess I'd say it made me erm 'windy' 💨 He should remember that...I'll let you know. I'm interested in a capsule form that has some backing behind it. Biotin and selenium are the hair holy grail supplements if you want to look into those too. (You'll already know but just in case.)

I'm trying out a sample if Dr Gross retinol eye serum. As it's nearly £70 for the full size I thought it'd be rude not to. Very drying is my first impression but did superficially tighten the area.

The cold light hit me at just the wrong angle this morning so I feel crepey today. 🧟‍♀️

Have bought Becca skin perfecting highlighter as Lisa Eldridge raves about it and it looks nice and subtle but glowy. Also Hourglass veil powder as I'm still hunting for my powder holy grail. Just got the little pot to try.

EnidButton · 17/02/2020 20:32

*when he gets in as his memory is better...

botemp · 17/02/2020 20:58

'windy' 😱 ahem, that's good to know... Thanks Enid, yes biotin and selenium are meant to be good for growth but I get that in well over the daily recommended dose from my diet easily and I don't seem to have issues absorbing it. The collagen theoretically could support the skin around the follicles and that is my weak area but I'm still highly sceptical.

I've tried the Becca highlighters (at the counter) and they just don't show up at all on my skin, even the counter staff were confused by it. I've experienced it with quite a few brands, it's either undetectable or weirdly metallic in an odd contrasting colour Confused
