For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Hello everyone.

I stopped using the Tret about a week ago (due to holidays coming up)but continuing with the BHA.
But OMG! is my skin annoyed with me, I've a chin full of those horrible swollen spots that you can't pick. It's not that time of the month. So horrible after having such nice (albeit flakey) skin for awhile.

ClientQueen · 30/01/2020 12:18

Excuse unflattering pic! But you can see the flaky bits

Bo which Purito spf do you get, is it the comfy water or the centella one?

Tsmummy08 · 30/01/2020 13:27

Interesting - I've got the Inkey list Hyaluronic acid but it stings like hell when I put it on over the Timeless C... so I've stopped using it, instead using Marula oil on top of C, then Ceramidin or Darphin Hydraskin Riche (+ Skin Aqua SPF).

I'm out for an hour in the morning with the dog but apart from that, don't spend much time outdoors in this weather (I'm a reptile, clearly). Rather than mix my tret with Cerave pm (which I've been doing for ages), I might try putting Cerave on 30 mins prior to the tret... trouble is, I'm highly likely to forget!

SallieSallow · 30/01/2020 13:59

Thanks Bo it’s in my basket, the B5 HA has got a small discount at the moment but might wait a few days and see if they offer a more generous one, though IIRC they rarely do.

Ts I do cerave followed by tret but don’t wait 30 mins and it still seems to ‘buffer’ it fine. Or you could set an alarm Grin

ClientList we have matching flakey patches Grin I think the silicone scrubby thing is helping with mine

Tsmummy08 · 30/01/2020 16:07

Sallie I'm afraid with my hormone-depleted brain even setting an alarm would be problematic - I'll just try your technique! :)

mintmagnummm · 01/02/2020 09:15

Are any of you still looking for an alternative to the original lrp fluid? Minimal ingredients, no mineral oil and no shea butter.... if so I may have it

rubyslippers83 · 01/02/2020 11:17

Hi everyone, thanks for your advice. I am going to add Timeless CE ferulic to my regime as recommended on here. How does this sound for a morning routine:

Cleanse with warm water and muslin cloth, Timeless CE ferulic, Simple light moisturiser and Heliocare gel SPF 50.

In the evening are there any good cleansers you recommend? I currently use Spiezia oil cleanser and have normal/combination type skin. As previously mentioned my main areas of concern are congestion; fine lines; keeping myself protected from sun damage and the odd breakout (usually along my jawline/chin area/mouth). Is the oil cleanser followed by trilogy rosehip oil too heavy do you think? I'm planning on adding in a glycolic acid, how about I start to use the NIP/FAB glycolic pads 2/3 times a week to start with in the evening? Plus is there any advantage to using a serum specific to eye care? Thanks so much for your advice 🙂

I get so confused about whether I should use glycolic acid; hyaluronic acid; retinol; which moisturiser etc etc. It's a mind field! 🤯

rubyslippers83 · 01/02/2020 11:20

minefield 😂

ClientQueen · 01/02/2020 12:46

Ooh my missha ceramide has arrived and has samples! They sent
Purito comfy water sunblock which looks interesting, meant to be not sticky and no cast
Purito vitamin C serum
Purito centella green level calming toner

Jedstre · 02/02/2020 10:56

I’ve had a busy time recently so just catching up with the thread. I’m still managing to use tret most evenings with not too many problems. After cleansing I apply LRP moisturiser (forgot name but has niacinamide in) I usually wait a bit (depends on how close to bedtime it is) then I apply tret.

I’ve started using P50, after using P50w for around a year. Wow; P50 is another level. I was probably a bit over generous with it the other night. My face was beetroot red! Otherwise my routine hasn’t changed much. Wash off cleanse in the morning (Alex Steiner from primark salicylic wash at the moment or Jan Marini bioglycolic wash) followed by timeless Vit C then LRP moisturiser (the one that’s now discontinued) I follow up after 10 mins or so with SPF (Biore bright milk usually). I bought the Biore spf 50 primer. It’s ok but I don’t feel I’m as generous as I am with other SPFs. The texture isn’t quite right to slather on but fine for these wintery days when I’m indoors mostly.

I got a simply human magnifying mirror at Christmas amazing what you can see with 5x magnification 😳

ClientQueen · 02/02/2020 18:20

So my fave hair products were reduced due to new packaging/rebrand. I may have bought.. a few BlushBlushBlush

SallieSallow · 03/02/2020 19:13

Mint I’m happy with cerave but interested to hear what you’ve found Grin

Ruby fine to keep using that oil as a first cleanse if it suits but oil cleansers are just to remove makeup and spf so you really need a non-oil second cleanser to get your skin properly clean. I use and like cerave hydrating. Do you wear makeup? If not you could probably just use cerave (or any similar wash off non oil cleanser) though I’d still recommend cleansing twice with it to make sure you’ve got your SPF off properly.

I don’t think those Nip/fab pads are the greatest choice as they’re quite harsh, most of us seem to be using either Paula’s choice BHA or bioligique recherche P50 for acid toners, P50 is the bomb IMO but it’s £60. If you really want AHA (glycolic) rather than BHA (salicylic) I’m not sure to be honest, I’ve used alpha H liquid gold in the past but didn’t rate it much, others might have more suggestions.

Eye serum I’m not sure, I’ve not yet found one that makes enough difference to me to be worth the money. Verso do one that Bo and Client use with good results but it’s £80 so I’m swithering on paying that price.

Jedstre P50 is the bomb, I get the tingle but my tough as old boots skin has never gone even slightly pink with it Grin it is the one and only product up to now that makes a visible difference to my skin, I’m thinking of buying the body one Blush

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2020 13:50

sallie _avene tolerance extreme emulsion (not cream)

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/02/2020 14:08

Hello OP I popped into boots to buy the products which you recommended for me and blow me down they were ALL out of stock, so I'm guessing it's really good and can't wait to get my hands on them! Grin

SallieSallow · 04/02/2020 16:31

Thanks Mint Smile

Moonlight I can’t remember what you were after but Look Fantastic tend to carry pretty much everything that’s in Boots and usually have discounts. Or if you can find your stuff on the Boots website you can order to collect in store, it’s usually pretty quick.

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/02/2020 16:53

Sally I was recommended these , Avenue extremely gentle cleanser or la Roche posay Toleriane dermo cleanser, Eucerin Ultrasensitive moisturiser rich, Cicaplast B5 balm.

Thankyou I shall have a look there who doesn't love a discount that's a bonus!

I was wondering which cleanser would be best for blocked pores around the nose and chin area if anyone has used both of the ones recommended to me ?

Once my skin care routine is sorted I sure will be back for the make up recommendations I literally have nothing atm!

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/02/2020 16:53

Sorry @SallieSallow spelt your name wrong Blush

botemp · 04/02/2020 18:32

Moonlight, were you the one with very sensitive skin and some sort of unexpected reaction? You only used some shower gel IIRC?

The Avene is probably better for blocked pores than LRP but I'd probably get the Eucerin for combo-oily skin instead if you have issues with clogging as the rich version will probably be too heavy, then use the cicaplast on dryer areas until the sensitivity has subsided.

OP posts:
MoonlightMistletoe · 05/02/2020 15:01

Yes that's me!
Thank you so much for your help I cannot wait to get my skin under control it's really knocking my confidence atm.

Tsmummy08 · 09/02/2020 11:10

Hmmm I'm not sure what's become of me!

Space NK are doing their Spend £60 for £45 promo (plus I've got some points to spend), and I've got no idea what to get (if anything).. The incentive points have to be spent by the end of the month so makes sense to get something during this offer - but nothing is leaping out at me. Normally I'd get a DE vit C but due to the expiry issues and the fact that the Timeless C is so much cheaper, I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

Was thinking about trying the Dr Gross peel pads... or a lip gloss: anyone tried the Becca ones?

SallieSallow · 10/02/2020 09:34

I’m not sure Ts as never bought anything from space NK apart from an hourglass palette last time they had that £15 off promotion.

I’d probably go for makeup rather than skincare, I’ve not tried the Becca lipglosses though. I keep eyeing up a Chanel bronzer for summer but don’t think space NK stock it.

Sammi38 · 10/02/2020 10:37

Hi All,

Thought I’d come back in. I got, some really helpful advice from botemp on a previous thread regarding my skin care, but life got in the way and I got a bit lazy with it all.

I had weight loss surgery in September, and have dropped nearly 5 stone since then, the rapid weight loss and trauma of the surgery have definitely taken their toll on my skin. I stopped smoking 2 months ago, so hopefully that will make my face look a bit fresher.

My main skin issues are; laxity, sun damage, hyperpigmentation from acne scarring, a few tethered pitted acne scars on my cheeks and chin, oily skin and trying to stave off the signs of aging (I’m 39 this year).

My skin care routine is as follows;

Am
Cerave facial hydrating cleanser. (I don’t double cleanse in the morning).

Jurlique rose toner (not sure if this actually does anything of value, but every time I spray a cotton pad with it and put it on my face it just takes me to heaven! and I do think it takes the redness down slightly?).

Skinceuticels ce ferulic (I got this as a free sample).

Lancôme precious cells eye cream

Omorivcza illuminating moisturiser

Pm;

Liz Earle cleanse and polish

Clarins toner for combination skin

Elemis super serum (HA based) or bio effect egf serum (free sample).

Eve Lom moisturiser.

Eye cream.

Some of this stuff is items I’ve received in beauty boxes/calendars so I’m hoping to use them up.

Exfoliation is either clarins exfoliant (this one is my favourite) or liquid rose gold, only once or twice a week.

I had a medium/deep tca peel on Friday with the Dr, so have a slightly different routine at the moment which includes lightening cream and extra moisturising. I’ve also bought the skinceuticels HA intensifier, so will incorporate that at some point in the next few weeks.

I also have retin a in different strengths as I go to Spain a lot of the time. I have a small brown spot from my peel on my temple so when I’ve healed and finished peeling, if it doesn’t flake off I can start using that on it. Will probably use the 0.5 as it’s a reasonably tough small targeted area.

My dr has suggested maybe using the serum10 instead of the ce ferulic acid due to my skin type Or just using the ferulic once a week, does anyone know of a good more reasonably priced alternative for the serum10? The peel was not cheap and I’m hoping to go back for subcision and filler for my acne pitting, so am trying to be as budget friendly as possible.

Sammi38 · 10/02/2020 10:41

Forgot to add, I used to use Kiehls spf50, but since my peel I’ve been using the skintech spf 50 sun protection that came in my post care kit from the Dr, and I’m really liking it. It is quite thick but when it dries it’s really lightweight and doesn’t feel greasy or heavy, I’ve also had no breakouts from it either.
