I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

Hepzibah that comment about 'witches' was utterly dreadful, I agree with you 100%. Disgusting. Depressing, hideous. Well done for saying what we all were thinking.

In other news, Ilikeyourhairyhands you obviously look amazing. But I particularly like your eyebrows! (Didn't want to say last night as thought sounded weird)

desperatesux · 25/11/2019 11:14

I think most people look their age, just some look much better than others on it. Even when I meet someone who has incredible skin I don't think hey they must be 25, I usually can guess their age to a decent degree of accuracy
Youth is impossible to replicate, look at Nicole Kidman, she doesn't have one line on her face but looks every day of her 50 years
Its a polite thing to say wow you look so young and people always undershoot when guessing someones age to avoid embarrassment!

The people I know who look the best for their age are the ones that put the most effort into it. Creams, facials, hairdressers, best clothes, exercise, keeping the weight down etc

Bluesheep8 · 25/11/2019 11:15

Good genes. My mother looks amazing at 72. I will confess that I smoke and drink Blush but I am careful about what I eat and never get any sun.

Floisme · 25/11/2019 11:17

Yes thank you Hepzibah

I'm equally Hmm at this concept of a 'youthful outlook', as if age is a personality.
I will concede I've grown less tolerant of nonsense with age but that's because the older you get, the more of it you have to put up with.

lotsofstripes · 25/11/2019 11:18

@PinkPanthaa we are the same... I always get told I look younger but I know it’s not for a good reason. I have very oily skin with spots and oily hair! I still look like a teenager if I’m in leggings and a jumper with converse...

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/11/2019 11:19

Hereditary oily skin.

SureTry · 25/11/2019 11:20

Genetics again here. I'm 42, it's only when I tell people how old my children are that they then question my age, they assume I'm 21. It makes me a bit paranoid as I think it's down to my immaturity rather than my appearance.

Mominatrix · 25/11/2019 11:29

Genetics
Never smoked
Avoided sun throughout my life
Always have been slim and never dieted
Always been active so still toned
Positive outlook on life

BillieEilish · 25/11/2019 11:33

Some of these comments ,much more so the actual beliefs are very funny!

Nope, you don't look 18 at 36... soz! You do not Grin

Totally agree about Nicole et al, she looks her age. fabulous, full of botox and her age.

ilovetofu · 25/11/2019 11:34

@Ohyesiam what face yoga do you do? Do you have a link please?

PuppyMonkey · 25/11/2019 11:39

I’m 53 and people say I look younger, early 40s or so.

I dye my hair, dark brown.
I have a few wrinkles but not as many as some of my peers tbh.
I’m slim but have a round face. I wear bright lipstick and my lips are still quite full.
I talk in a high pitched voice which I think makes me sound younger than I am (I hate my voice).
I’ve always used moisturiser morning and night, right from when I was late teens.
Never smoked.
Have kept out of the sun since early 20s, I find sunbathing boring.
I like my sleep.Grin

Percivalthebabyspider · 25/11/2019 11:43

Genetics here.
Never smoked
Careful in the sun

Buddywoo · 25/11/2019 11:48

High cheekbones also help. They hold your face up when you age.

RatherBeRiding · 25/11/2019 12:20

As someone who is blessed with looking nothing like me true age I put it down to:
Good genes (thank you Mum!)
Lifelong non-smoker
Healthy eating and regular exercise
Remaining slim and active into my 60s
Covering grey hairs and having a hair style and colour suited to someone decades younger
Taking style advice from my 20-something DD
Never been a sun worshipper

Cleanfreshbedding · 25/11/2019 12:28

44 years old and post menopause here. Smoked for 20+ years but have now given up drinking. I never go out in the sun without factor 30 on, regularly sleep in make up and have had the most stressful 4 years imaginable. Got asked for ID in Sainsbury’s twice in the last 12 months 🤷🏼‍♀️

Vapatea · 25/11/2019 12:44

I met a couple yesterday; the man looked a well presented 55-60 and the woman mid forties. My jaw was on the floor when he said he was 71. Even if his wife was 10 years younger, she still looked 15 years younger than that! As others have said:- good hair, trend led clothes and clear skin had everything to do with their appearance. I am still in shock though.

Bbq1 · 25/11/2019 13:00

Good Genes
Lots of water
Cleanse, toned and moisturised twice daily since the age of 15

Everyone in my family, myself and dh included are regularly taken for at least 10 years younger than we are. Dh doesn't really like it, I love it!

goodluckhun · 25/11/2019 13:02

I don't drink or smoke, never tried drugs

But how would you know? I don't need to prove anything to you but this link shows that your experience is not necessarily true of everyone...

Floofffs · 25/11/2019 13:08

@Doubleraspberry ditto!! I'm overweight so I have plump skin and no wrinkles despite being early 50's. I've been mistaken for late 30's. I use absolutely no products at all so I'm putting it down to a cross between genetics and being overweight.

Someone pass me a Mars bar lol!

DianeWhatcock · 25/11/2019 14:10

Yes God forbid one might look like an "older mother"
Yanno if there was less ageism, towards women especially, it just wouldn't matter to look your age. I'm sure I look mine. That's actually fine with me-I have earned my stripes-but the way you get treated changes dramatically when you look over 40, and I resent that massively.

There's a barely disguised contempt at over 40 women "trying too hard". Maybe the done-up women in the bistro just feel good getting dolled up. Maybe they don't care if you think they look like "witches"...

🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 well said @HepzibahGreen

(Btw I love your username, I recently read the book she is in with my ten year old)

Sashkin · 25/11/2019 14:29

Oh I don’t think it makes you look young, any more than being short makes your face look young.

What it does is make people ignore how old your face looks when they are guessing how old you are, which is a completely different thing.

I regularly get told I look “in my 20s” - facially I absolutely do not look a day under 40. What I am is short with a high-pitched voice, with minimal makeup and dressed fairly casually, and that gets interpreted as “young”.

tabulahrasa · 25/11/2019 14:39

“What it does is make people ignore how old your face looks when they are guessing how old you are, which is a completely different thing.”

That’s exactly what happens when people age you by your children’s age as well.
