I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

I get told l look young for my age. I think it’s my genes (my mum is 70 but gets mistaken for 60), drinking lots of water, moisturiser, eating lots of fruit and veg. Never smoked. I have been naughty with the sun but these day’s lm strict with sun tan lotion especially in this county

HepzibahGreen · 25/11/2019 14:47

(Btw I love your username, I recently read the book she is in with my ten year old)
Aw thanks!
It's one of my favourite books of all time. Hepzibah certainly wouldn't have given a shit if she looked her age. She was a formidable woman. As I get older I'm not aiming for "youthful" I'm aiming for "don't fuck with me" Grin

Jodie77 · 25/11/2019 14:54

I'm short and don't wear heals. And chubby which plumps out the wrinkles.

ElspethFlashman · 25/11/2019 18:48

Quite shocked at the amount of smokers on this thread!

One in ten moderate smokers and almost one in five heavy smokers (more than 15 cigarettes a day) will die of lung cancer.

It's more than premature ageing you guys should be worried about!

Sorry to derail, but I work in the lung cancer area and have to say it.

managedmis · 25/11/2019 20:43

I don't smoke.
I sleep a lot.
I eat a lot of veg.
Tons of water.
Thick moisturiser.
I rarely go in the sun.
I'm slim, which makes me look younger (contrary to what folks on here say)
I wear fairly trendy clothes, or at least stuff that suits me.

managedmis · 25/11/2019 20:50

I've noticed between peers that what makes a huge difference is smoking and alcohol. Those two are massively aging.

Bythebeach · 25/11/2019 20:52

Definitely genetics. I eat utter crap, don’t exercise enough, am perpetually exhausted.
On the upside, never smoked and barely drink.

woodhill · 25/11/2019 20:53

@Ragwort

your poor dm is only 84 😊

Ragwort · 26/11/2019 05:32

wood, my mistake, her DOB is actually 1933 Grin.

Yes you can face yoga your jowls! They respond really well. As do the folds from nose to mouth corners, and neck slackness.

Wincarnis · 26/11/2019 07:41

stay out of the sun
No cigs
No booze
No drugs
No red meat
No grey hair
Good moisturizer
Look happy
And a bit of genetic good fortune

DianeWhatcock · 26/11/2019 08:09

@HepzibahGreen

HepzibahGreen · 26/11/2019 08:20

Your list made me lol Wincarnis.
Look happy. That's a bit like when your manager tell you to look busy when you're not..Grin

Wincarnis · 26/11/2019 08:52

Hepzibah, I know! lol

I’m also surprised at all the smokers on this thread who say that they look young for their age. I’m guessing that they are 20s and 30s not 40+.

I don’t know a single middle aged smoker who hasn’t aged more than her peers. I think It really starts to show by late 40s.

Im also Shock at all the posters who claim that they look 25 years younger (“ I’m 45 and I get IDed all the time” ) . I’ve never met anyone who genuinely looked more than 5-10 years younger that their age.

I mean close up and without make up, not in a photo. Not a casual glance across a room, which is probably more to do with figure and clothing. Not an assumption that because you have a 12 year old, you are probably under 50.

I also think people are confusing chat up lines/ kind comments from loved ones / compliments with genuine belief. The fact that a skin care sales consultant in Boots told that you looked 18 when you are 40 is a teeny bit suspect IMO. Or a man you are dating said you don’t look a day over 40 when you are 65.

I think a 65 year old who is in great shape can pass for late 50s. She can’t look ever look 40 again and she probably can’t even look mid 50s without a some expert ‘work’.

Let’s face it, Jennifer Aniston is 50 and she looks 40, not 25. And she had a head start on most Mumsnetters and a few more resources.

ElspethFlashman · 26/11/2019 11:45

I agree. Im almost 45 and get mistaken for younger by patients. But tellingly they never say younger than "I thought you were about 35!"

I mean I know I look younger than I am thanks to the no smoke/no sun thing, but there's no way I look younger than mid thirties. Even with a bucket of undereye concealer! It's pretty much impossible.

And lol at being ID'd and actually thinking" I must look 21!" as opposed to" welp, I guess it's policy to ID everyone cos they sure as fuck don't think I'm 21....."

TheHoundsofLove · 26/11/2019 11:49

I'm also of the opinion that people look more or less their age, regardless. Yes - some may look more fashionable, more athletic, better presented etc... but everyone that I know looks about their age.
The closest I've come to someone judging my age was a lady at a party the other day saying that I have lovely skin and asking me whether I have Botox (I don't!). I'm still not really sure whether to take it as a compliment or not... 😂

cloud1183 · 26/11/2019 12:02

Definitely agree that not many people look much younger than they are- they just look very well for their age. Even celebs who have had a load of surgery never look 10 years younger- they just look fake.

However, I think I look on the young side for my age thanks to no smoking or drinking, naturally pale complexion and keeping out of the sun. Also, slightly oily skin that’s prone to the odd hormonal zit helps although I’d take a few wrinkles over an acne battle

Delatron · 26/11/2019 12:25

Completely agree, I’ve yet to meet or see anyone in real life or a celebrity who is 40+ and genuinely looks 10/15 years younger.

To be honest ageing hasn’t taken hold in your 30s so no real achievement to look younger then (I did, then I turned 40!). Don’t assume (sorry) that if you look young then you’ll continue to track 10 years younger, you won’t. We all age. You can still look amazing, better even. You may even look quite a bit younger than your peers if you look after yourself. But I’ve never met anyone who is 45+ who looks 30.
Though actually I think ageing can level off in your 60s (post menopause?) and 70/80
year olds can look quite a bit younger!

Celebs like Jennifer Anniston, Julia Roberts, Tess Daley all look amazing full stop. They’re all 50ish and I think look early to mid 40s. But that’s 5-7ish years younger with lots of (very good) work.

Aridane · 26/11/2019 13:24

A friend of mine - early 40s - looks early 20s. I don't know how, esp as she smokes FFS. It can be problematic for her at work as her seniority is not immediately apparent t from her appearance. However, she is the only person I know who has this type of portrait in the attic youthfulness

Ali86 · 26/11/2019 13:32

@Ohyesiam would you mind saying which face yoga you follow please. There are loads on youtube and I am never sure which are good!

Tableclothing · 26/11/2019 13:32

There's always Paul Rudd.

Sashkin · 26/11/2019 13:52

“I’m almost 45 and get mistaken for younger by patients. But tellingly they never say younger than "I thought you were about 35!"

Some of my patients have accused me of being a schoolgirl (Preens) Grin

(About 40% of my patients have dementia, but let’s gloss over that)

damnthatanxiety · 26/11/2019 14:09

The OP asked people who are regularly told they look young. Not 'people who claim to look 25 years younger than they are'. If someone is 55 and they are often mistaken for someone in their mid 40s then they fit the criteria. I have met the occasional 70 something who looks to be in their late 50s. And I know a few 50 somethings that absolute look around 40. They are generally happy and fit people. Men and women. Contrary to pp, I don't think being overweight makes you look young. It may plump out wrinkles but visible aging is a whole more than wrinkles. Being overweight makes people look matronly. They lose their neck and look dumpy. This is very aging. Of course being scrawny is also aging but to suggest that being overweight makes one look younger than being a healthy weight is a bit weird.
