I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

I think it's mostly down to genes. Me and my brother look a lot younger than we are, he's 27 and I'm 32. We both get mistaken for teenagers and trust me, it's embarrassing more than anything else. Neither of us have particularly healthy life styles. Both smoke, have lots of stress. I don't drink and do wear sunscreen, he drinks a lot and doesn't wear sunscreen. I think with a healthy lifestyle you can definitely look healthier/more youthful.

AnandaKonda · 24/11/2019 15:33

God I love MN! I didn't expect all those replies, thanks! And I appreciate all the honesty Grin
Ha! 'poor woman's botox' comment is so true. My teen hates it because it makes me look so young (his words).
It's probably true about under estimating ages of other ethnicities.

A canvasser asked me if I was old enough to vote the other day! Am in my 40s. To be honest I was turned away slightly as I opened the door. I think it was because I was wearing a scruffy hoodie and had my hair in a messy high ponytail. So I just didn't look like a 'grown up'.

Lamentations · 24/11/2019 15:35

Genetics is the number one thing, undoubtedly.

Being so pale it was pointless sunbathing in my younger days has been beneficial in middle age. I wear high SPF all year round now but only for the last couple of years.

I look after my skin well with skincare and this makes an enormous difference to how good my skin looks but I'm not sure to what extent that's connected to an overall appearance of looking young.

KristinaM · 24/11/2019 15:35

Sunscreen
No smoking
Little alcohol
Rarely use foundation
Reasonably fit and slim
Eat very healthily
Fast intermittently
Dress and have hair cut in a contemporary style (as I’m middle aged)
Had kids in my 40s so people think I must be younger
Fortunate to have good health

AlexaAmbidextra · 24/11/2019 15:36

I think it’s largely genetics. I have always been told I look younger ( and no, it happens so frequently that they can’t all be telling lies). 😄. I had my flu jab a couple of weeks ago at Tesco and there was much discussion as I said I needed to the over 65 version. First the assistant checked and then the pharmacist asked them to check again. There was such a hoo ha it I felt quite embarrassed. I claim no credit other than always using No 7 moisturiser. Both my parents looked incredibly youthful.

Tinyandpetite · 24/11/2019 15:39

Botox!!

DramaAlpaca · 24/11/2019 15:41

Genes. The women in my family look younger than they are.

mumdom · 24/11/2019 15:42

Nobody looks that closely. Forget fillers and facelifts. A good bra, trend-led clothes and hair, and funky glasses if you rely on them for eyesight, are all you need.

Take honest advice on fashion, hair, and make-up if you wear it, from much younger members of your family. My mother has always had her clothes bought for her by my shopping-mad sister, and now her daughters (my nieces) advise me.

I hate to say it, but hair dye makes a huge difference.

AnneKipanki · 24/11/2019 15:43

Genes .
Not smoking.
Good diet .
Not sunbathing.
Hair colour.
Wear very little make up .
Moderate exercise.

Besidesthepoint · 24/11/2019 15:44

Not having children. All my friends faces aged considerably when they had babies. I thought that they would start to look better once the kids got older but the sleep-deprived wrinkles stay.

GrapefruitGin · 24/11/2019 15:45

I’m afraid genetics. No secret. Don’t have great skin but I do know how to do my makeup well and use decent products. People are always very shocked when I tell them my age.

Besidesthepoint · 24/11/2019 15:46

Not smoking, not sunbathing and no skin make uphelps too. My SIL and I are the same age but her skin is awful. Her nice figure makes up for it but her face looks older than mine.

Hairsprayqueeen · 24/11/2019 15:47

Botox. 38 and regularly asked for ID.

flowery · 24/11/2019 15:48

I don’t go in the sun because I’m very pale and burn easily.

I’ve never smoked.

I always wear sunglasses when driving or outside when it’s even a little bit bright, so I don’t screw my eyes up.

Strawberryshortcake28 · 24/11/2019 15:49

Not smoking
No excessive drinking
Not too much make up
I stay away from patterned clothing

Tableclothing · 24/11/2019 15:51

I frequent supermarkets that are largely staffed by people approaching retirement. None of them can tell the difference between 21 and 37 Grin

SomethingPhishy · 24/11/2019 15:51

I was ID'ed again in Morrisons a few weeks back & I am 41!

I'm short (5 ft 2)
Never smoked
Drink 10 units or less a week
Dont wear make up very often (& take it off when I do)
Dont use bar soap on my face
Keep out of the sun

But I think genetics play a part as my Dad looks young & only started going grey in his late 50's.

SlightlyBonkersQFA · 24/11/2019 15:54

@ohyesiam please tell me more. I bought a face flex a while ago. I thought it was helping a bit. My jowls are my only bad sign of ageing i think. Can i yoga my jowls ?!

Getoffmylilo · 24/11/2019 15:54

People comment about my hands, they've never aged, no lines, age spots, visible veins or boney bits. They're hardworking hands and take quite a battering but I've never used anything on them, no handcream, nothing. They're smooth and firm and belong to a child. I'm deeply regretting all the years of being so enthusiastic about expensive and time consuming skin care routines for my now saggy old face!

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 24/11/2019 15:56

It was always sleep well, 6 hours a night and an afternoon nap before the gym... I'm 29 and have always been told I look about 5 years younger.
5 months after having my son, he's definitely put paid to that.

Bourbonbiccy · 24/11/2019 15:59

I'm only tiny, so i think that contributes but I have never "baked" in the sun and always use sun creams when out in it.

I now drink lots of water, stopped smoking a while back ( improved my skin massively) and keep in good shape, I think it all helps.

Duchessofealing · 24/11/2019 16:01

Yoga (for posture and ease of movement), sun cream and getting enough sleep.

ElspethFlashman · 24/11/2019 16:01

No sun.

No smoke.

Everything else, water etc, won't do a damn thing if there's sun and smoke.

ElspethFlashman · 24/11/2019 16:06

Hair dye. With my natural grey hair I would probably look at least 10 years older than I do now

Agree. This is contraversial on MN as someone always gets v defensive and says that since letting their hair go grey they've never had so many compliments etc etc and certainly it suits some people - but nobody will ever think you're younger than you are, that's for sure.
