Does anyone remember the fuss in the press when Diana wore her hair up the state opening of parliament? I'm sure it was pretty unpleasant, she was attention-seeking when she should be being deferential to the Queen. I do think Diane suited it short.

DuchessofWoke · 21/11/2019 13:52

I personally always thought Diana’s hair was awful. A helmet and rather ageing. It was probably how she dresses but I’m often surprised when I realise that she was younger than either Kate or Meghan are now when she died.

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 13:52

I've actually found that my short hair is a lot easier. I just wash and go. When I had long hair, which I always did in my teenage years and in my twenties, I used to have to wash and straighten it every day. Probably why it's destroyed actually Halloween Blush.

I've heard that a lot though; that short hair is harder to style and takes more time. I genuinely have found the opposite to be true.

I would love long, swishy hair, but it isn't going to happen for me at the moment, as my hair looks crap long and short looks a lot better.

However, I personally think more people opt for long hair than really should (controversial, I know), because it's the standard look for women at the moment. I think, as fashions change, that will change too, but there will always be people who genuinely only suit one or the other. People who have amazing long hair aren't all going to chop it all off because it's fashionable, but people who don't might have a change.

I think with the pictures of Maxima on the other thread, that looked like a clear case of someone who used to have beautiful, long hair. I imagine for people like that, if their hair is a bit out of shape, they might not want to cut it, because they used to look good with it long and also, the fashion at the moment is to wear it long, regardless of age, hair type etc.

The other thing I have noticed is how annoyed some people get, even other women, when a woman cuts her hair short. It's really weird, but also fascinating, the modern fixation on having hair as long as you can. Actually, it isn't a new thing at all, as it comes from somewhere in the bible that women should have long hair...I will need to google. Queens and aristocratic women going back to empress Maud were praised for having very long hair.

Sorry, if this is a bit of a tangent, but I find it really interesting!

whitershadeofpale · 21/11/2019 13:53

I think Diana had quite a large nose and longer hair somehow made it more noticeable, I liked her hair short. Generally though, I like people experimenting with their hair. The royals as a whole seem to find a style when they're young and just stick with it, sometimes with very minor tweaks likes Kate's colour and sometimes hardly at all like Anne Shock.

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 13:54

I think her hair looks ageing now, because women who still wear their hair that way are probably the age Diana would be now. At the time, it was probably seen as modern and youthful!

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 13:58

But if a woman has long hair, it is her glory. For her hair is given to her for a covering

Corinthians apparently.

Have you ever heard a man, or sometimes a woman, giving off when another woman has her hair cut short? It genuinely makes some people angry! Such a strange business.

DuchessofWoke · 21/11/2019 14:04

short haircut

short haircut

I guess it depends on the cut. First pic above, lovely. Second, yikes!

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 14:06

Oh, I can't see them annoyingly. Takes me to a blank screen? I'm on my phone though, so it's probably that which is causing the problem.

DuchessofWoke · 21/11/2019 14:11

Hang on, will try again.

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 14:14

Yeah, come on woke. This is important stuff Halloween Wink!

WineOrGinOrBoth · 21/11/2019 14:17

I’m only a couple of years younger than Diana would have been & short hair was definitely a thing. I think I had a handful of friends who had long hair.

DuchessofWoke · 21/11/2019 14:18

loads here

Here’s every hairdo year by year! I feel 1991-92 involved a lot of bad hair days. She’d nailed it by the end though.

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 14:23

I agree with you woke. I especially like it slicked back. I would look like Miss Trunchbull like that, but she looks gorgeous imo.

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 14:24

That's so interesting @WineOrGinOrBoth. I honestly can't imagine it being like that now as so many women go for long hair. I do find it so interesting where these fashions come from and how they reflect the times. History nerd 🤓.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 21/11/2019 14:30

I’m trying to remember my halls at university. There were 12 girls & only 2 had long hair. Everyone else, including me, had either short or bobbed hair.

BeatriceTheBeast · 21/11/2019 14:36

If you ever watch any of the old episodes in series, like Inspector Morse and Frost* etc, you notice all the young women have shorter hair actually. I wonder if we'll come back to this thread in thirty years time and have totally different views on things.

*What?! They're perfectly good programs Halloween Grin!

AdaColeman · 21/11/2019 14:45

It's interesting to think about long hair being linked with prestige and being the standard "look" of the moment. And the contrast between the austerity/recycling/sustainability movements and the luxury/high maintenance/expense of keeping long looking good.
On the other hand, powerful women in the world of politics generally have short hair, Nicola Sturgeon, Angela Merkel, Christine Lagarde, Erna Solberg, Michelle Bachelet to name only a few.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 21/11/2019 15:14

I had my hair like Di's was in 1997. Pixie crop at the moment. It's been every length in between.

Def looks better short. I have a long, narrow oval face and long hair really drags it down. Don't really care much about the fashion in lengths, but i use colour to keep it interesting. Bleached silver at the moment.

RosinaAlmaviva · 21/11/2019 15:25

I love the tartan skirt too. It's Christmassy but can be worn other times as well. I'm on the lookout for one myself.

Yes, I loved Kate's look last year. I bought a tartan circle skirt from Joanie but was disappointed - too thin for a winter skirt and the hemline was uneven, which I didn't realise until it was too late to return.

Might try House of Foxy next time.

IfWishesWereFishes · 21/11/2019 15:46

I loved that tartan skirt too, although I absolutely hate when she wears tartan in Scotland like it's a dressing up party.

I am too chubby to look good in that outfit i think Grin

Laiste · 21/11/2019 16:01

No.8, the 1983 pic of Diana in that link by DuchessofWoke is my favorite. She's just glowing.

whitershadeofpale · 21/11/2019 16:03

It seems that Kate will no longer be attending tonight's awards 'due to the children' apparently they're not unwell and she's still meeting winners this afternoon. Slightly odd.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/11/2019 16:07

Maybe the babysitter has let her down...

QueenOfTheAndals · 21/11/2019 16:12

Surely they could go for a sleepover with Uncle Harry? Or H&M could drop in to keep an eye on them. Imagine the overdrive the press would go into!

Obviously Pippa & Alizee are coming round and they are all going to play Gutterhead, so much more fun than an awards night! Grin
