So it will be 'lost' to the royal family

SenecaFalls · 05/12/2019 15:45

Misogynist wanker class system! Pretty much. This was brought home to me again in reading Anne Glenconner's book. She was the eldest child of the Earl of Leicester but because he had no sons, the title and her childhood home went to a cousin.

On the question of whether the royal dukedoms will revert to being just regular dukedoms after they pass out of the hands of HRHs, I think the answer to that is yes, but in the absence of male heirs down the road they would revert to the crown and so could become royal again.

Princess Mary was Countess of Harewood by marriage, not in her own right. Princess Alice, Dowager Duchess of Gloucester was allowed the style Princess Alice although she was not a blood princess. The Queen granted her request to use that style but did not create her a princess of the United Kingdom.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/12/2019 17:38

I thought Princess Alice and Princess Mary, Duchess of Harewood were the only ones to be given titles in their own right.

I thought Princess Mary was the previous a Princess Royal, so à blood Princess anyway.

Prior to Princess Alice being granted a Princess title; Princess Marina asked to be referred to as such after being widowed, to distinguish her from Katharine Worsleyand avoid being called «Dowager Duchess».
But she was already a Princess of Greece, so it wasn’t such a big a deal.

For Princess Alice, it was more surprising as she had never been a Princess “own name”. But the precedent had been set by Marina.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/12/2019 17:40

I think Charlotte would surely become a Princess Royal one day.
It is an excellent title.
(Taken from the French Court who addressed the eldest daughter of the King as Madame Royale)

SenecaFalls · 05/12/2019 17:59

And brought to you courtesy of Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I. Their daughter Mary was the first Princess Royal.

True, but I have a feeling that the daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch, who was a direct descendant of Charles II, might have considered herself equal or even superior to minor European royalty. And the Queen, herself the child of a Scottish aristocrat, may have been in sympathy with that notion.

paradyning · 05/12/2019 19:36

Thank you oh knowledgeable ones

MotherofPearl · 05/12/2019 19:46

This is all so fascinating about the titles and their history. I love this thread!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/12/2019 19:50

@SenecaFalls

I didn't realise Princess Alice had such a blue blooded pedigree!

Spudlet · 05/12/2019 20:02

Going back to Kate’s green dress for the diplomatic NATO thingy, I’ve just seen a comment suggesting it might have been bought for one of the cancelled engagements in Pakistan. What engagements were cancelled though? I can’t remember?

Also, they reckon it’s McQueen rather than Wickstead 🤷‍♀️

AdaColeman · 05/12/2019 20:12

When their plane was caught in a storm and unable to land at Islamabad, they returned to Lahore, so the next morning's programme had to be abandoned as they were in the wrong place.
It was towards the close of the trip, maybe on the Thursday.

Spudlet · 05/12/2019 20:20

Aha, yes of course! I remember now you say that. Thanks!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/12/2019 21:21

Very festive of maxima!

FaithHowellsYellowCoat · 05/12/2019 21:57

If I’d grown up in a massive pile then not inherited it I’d be majorly fucked off. Unless it was a money pit, like this one -

Has anyone got a times sub? I’ve lost my login. Coincidentally his wife is Rose Hanbury’s sister.

JohnandMary · 05/12/2019 23:23

If Princess Alice was descended from Charles II it must have been through the illegitimate line as he had no legitimate offspring. Isn’t Kate meant to be descended from another of his illegitimate children or is that Camilla?

SenecaFalls · 05/12/2019 23:34

Diana was descended from one of the illegitimate children of Charles II. Actually two of them I think.

The Scotts of Buccleuch are descended from Charles's illegitimate son who was the Duke of Monmouth. He married the Countess of Buccleuch (in her own right) and took her surname Scott.

Rhubarbisevil · 05/12/2019 23:39

Alice Montagu Douglas Scott (same family) married the Duke of Gloucester and was the current Duke’s mother.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/12/2019 23:43

@JohnandMary I think Kate is rumoured to descend from an illegitimate child of Henry VIII so George will descend from more kings than his predecessors!

There’s a Royal Baby due in Belgium

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/12/2019 11:20

Sorry Luxembourg

SenecaFalls · 06/12/2019 11:26

That's happy news!

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/12/2019 11:27

Oh that's nice. They've been married quite a long time and I did wonder if there was a lot of pressure on them to provide an heir.
