Yet, there’s an attitude expressed that doesn’t shy away from the camera when it is knowingly there, nor does it perform to a lens as we only seem to be capable in this modern age. It all makes for an interesting contrast to the Parisian bourgeois imagery of the advertisements that sit politely alongside it, and seem to have been uncritically lifted into Hedi Slimane’s most recent runway shows. As much as it pains me to credit the man with anything, he’s on to something that there’s something of value interspersed among these pages that’s worth revisiting although I’d encourage him to drift his gaze to the other side of the page, away from the ads.

Perhaps it’s all in the boots, they are rather fabulous after all. From the soles up the feet can only march on forwards, as if in delayed response to Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 hit, not a moment spared for what is left in their wake in search of something novel to discover. Perhaps 2020 will be the year we put the ever-present cameras that surround us down in favour of the small, to be shared between those present for it, to reunite us with the truly intimate, a lost relic from 1977.

Argh, MN is really acting up, I've had to post and repost whilst trying to remember what images go with what post several times so I hope they're all there now (5 posts in total, 13 images) as it's been a bit of a nightmare this morning as it just took me to the first page every time I posted without posting the actual post Angry

OP posts:
Floisme · 07/12/2019 11:14

I've got 5 posts, including the 'Day 7' title one, 4 with pics. Thanks *bo'. Great photos and it's fascinating how modern they look.

Yes cameras only came out on special occasions. The downside is that, aside from hilarious wedding, christening and holiday snaps, I have hardly any photos of my young self, and even fewer of my parents. But the upside was growing up without a camera shoved in my face. I've never learned the art of posing and, on the whole, I think that's a blessing.

botemp · 07/12/2019 18:15

Thanks Flo, I was too aggravated with trying to post I couldn't be motivated to check whether everything had gone out correctly but I seem to have managed it in the end.

I definitely think it's a blessing too, I'm always disturbed how in some families they have replaced prayer with a social media shot as the children patiently wait for the camera, pose with an enthusiasm that is otherwise completely absent, and only then dare to tuck in.

I'm sort of in the middle there are some pictures of my childhood but not loads and I wasn't all that aware. Very few of my parents and it's mostly of individuals, very few group shots, I think there's only one family shot out there. Predominantly special occasions and holidays.

Oh I loved these old photos - two years younger than me yet they now feel vintage Grin. Young Janice was a thing to behold indeed, so much personality as well as stunning beauty. This heady innocence of the 70s when even slightly sleazy photos didn’t feel sleazy because you could still believe that it was about sexual liberation and not mere lechery Wink.

A treat for you today - mr bani went to a party that had the theme Gucci. Our eldest helped him put together a reasonable outfit from our Gucci-free home: silver glittery socks, my Uniqlo U jeans (that he folded up after we took the pic), a band tee that’s bright yellow with a red rose, and our eldest’s knitted second hand cardigan Grin

Please tell me that look was finished with fur lined glitter crocs and a really gaudy belt 🤤

Also, I think I've found are next meet up location 🤯 Have you been Bani?

OP posts:
banivani · 07/12/2019 21:28

As he was leaving I did glance down at my knock off crocs (shut up, I have plantar fasciitis) and consider suggesting them but he might have gotten into the idea and started looking for some sort of fur and he would have been late then. He wore black “good” shoes, to give the effect of slightly too long feet you know? Sadly we did not have a gaudy belt but he found an odd bling key ring thing he hung on his ordinary one. 😁

We’re not going to bloody Ullared that’s like my worst bloody nightmare get away with yourself. 😂 Noticed that the article said “brands” were sold but didn’t mention which ones. I know people who go on specially chartered bus trips to stock up on like cling film. Uuuurrrgggghhhh.

botemp · 07/12/2019 21:40

Yes, I was curious what shit they're selling over there. If they were brands of interest I would have known about this 'Valhalla' already

Ah well, I'm convinced a man owning gaudy belts is a major red flag. So congrats Bani, Mr. Bani sounds like a good 'un.

OP posts:
banivani · 07/12/2019 22:36

Ah he’s alright when he’s not driving me around the bend. ;)

Question for Bo because Dutch - what do you know of Maison Anna Heylen? There’s a pair of trousers on Tradera that look interesting but going by given measurements I am unsure of the sizing.

botemp · 08/12/2019 09:18

Aaaaaargh. In giving up for now as I don't seem to be able to post anything with a picture attached and I'm far from over my image limit Angry I'll give it another go tonight but for now accept these paltry offerings of Loïc Prigent's latest video of which is a bit long winded but really interesting in terms of volume.

Also read this early this morning about the tug of war between maximalism and minamalism in fashion, very much appreciated the bar graphs for whatever reason and I enjoyed seeing some of my own drivel validated by others as well.

Bani, not much beyond that she's Belgian and never participates in the sample sales. Sizing will be Belgian which is somewhat between German and French sizing, so assume a more generous French size for the number.

OP posts:
banivani · 08/12/2019 10:57

Aw Bo that’s a shame - didn’t you email MNHQ one year for extra picture allowance?

I’m enjoying the article a lot and plan to spend some time looking at the graphs Grin.

Not surprised MAH is not in the sample sales because it seems to be all very uuuuunique ie no samples. Link to the trousers here www.tradera.com/item/376946216?utm_source=ios&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=share

They’re marked as a 40, but it says the waist is 88 cm which seems big given the rise appears to be 25 cm? Can’t decide if I think they’re a bit fab or too out there.

botemp · 08/12/2019 11:19

I've never emailed MNHQ, I just have a roomier allowance without asking Halo I'll contact them tomorrow if it's still an issue, doubt I'll get a response from tech on a Sunday. Worst case scenario I'll set up an Instagram account and link to that.

Yeah, that seems really wide for a 40 but maybe it's supposed to be worn with a bit of a dropped crotch, maybe? That's the only way it would make sense to me unless the measurement is wrong? It doesn't look as massive as those measurements indicate. Although it does look to be sitting higher at the back than the front so maybe the flat measurement distorts that a bit.

@banivani, err... could I ask for your help please? I think you're in Sweden, yes? I have a set of (ancient) saucepans, bought by DH's GPs in Scandinavia (they were fans of Scandi design in the 1950s) which are showing their age, but only in so far as the Bekelite pan handles are crumbling. Is it beyond possibility that new handles and knobs could be bought? They are copper bottomed stainless and fabulous quality. If I photographed the maker's mark, would it be traceable?

Redandblue11 · 08/12/2019 17:11

Oh the 70s! I have some very few but fantastic photos of my parents and their friends on that time. My mum got married at home by a (“left wing”) priest she wore white flared trousers and very tight white blouse, my dad in flares too.
Sometimes I see those photos and admire the style that reflected much more than what you saw. In Argentina, like many parts of South America dictators started to take governments down and many many that voiced their rights were unfortunate (like families of some of my closest friends). So for me the 70s images always remind me of my parents generation and the fight for a better country.
Some of the protests photos I saw also show the same incredible style.

Redandblue11 · 08/12/2019 17:12

Good job by Mr Bani!

botemp · 09/12/2019 07:35

Testing with a pic that should really have made into 'Get Shorty' of the AC but it appears to be the law of AC that the best pictures to illustrate a point show up after you've posted it Hmm

DAY 9 - DAY 9 - DAY 9

Switching themes from New Horizons to:

WHERE THE HEART IS

The lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul - Kahlil Gibran

When life feels like it’s being lived on a razor’s edge, there can be a palpable longing for tenderness. Something untainted and still held up as pure in among the rubble of what was once considered steady and secure.

On the runways, the focus has slowly shifted the gaze from the more obvious assets of the female form and exposed a vulnerable and palpable intimacy residing beneath the skin and flesh that covers the heart. And it’s not exclusive to the female sex, the men’s runways are recognising the symbolic area as worthy of accentuation and protection. In unsteady times a bit of insulation never hurt anybody which makes it all the more poignant and daring when we suddenly see the area exposed. If only as a subtle reminder that we need to take care of each other.

My One and Obi

No, it’s not a boob tube, I promise. Even though it kind of looks like one sometimes… but boob tubes were definitely about boobs and this iteration almost forgets they’re there. There’s no sinching nor emphasising of a waist. It is most notably sharp and graphic, the anthesis of the tracing of curves in the boob tubes of yore.

In the previous advent calendar I did suggest that we were seeing a movement towards the morphing of belts into outfits rather than a visibly (and contrasting) separate layer above, neatly forgetting such a thing has been around for a while in the form of an obi. Seems everyone else rediscovered it as well and has gotten creative with it...

It can vary from the most narrowest of bands across the chest that somehow despite the turbocharged sexuality of a Thierry Mugler show still don’t feel vulgar to a most chaste button-up over an area that’s never been that sexualised on a man and merely recognises the vulnerability that’s possible regardless of sex.

This sudden emphasis on the horizontal can feel fresh (see also: Get Shorty), perhaps it is just a reminder of a horizon, of a landscape rather than an object, an invite for the gaze to travel beyond what’s directly in front of it.

Ok, now the pictures I'm attaching are messing up as well as it being ridiculously impossible to post. Though I suspect picture mess up is down to me getting exasperated in the process. Photo 2 should have been this.

Equally, there’s something satisfying about the mass it can bring. An obi is open to some interpretation -an ‘obi belt’ never really resembled an obi at all- the mechanism that wraps it all up can be neatly hidden or in plain sight. An obi need not be an actual obi to function like one, and with a bit of trial and error repurposing other garments works just as well.
