I have serious trench envy Elle that coat is stunning.

The jumper is lovely Bo

I stopped at whistles to see the belt bag that Bo shared and they did not have it in store. I saw this (very small at £99) instead, I like it, but I find it pricey, but is 30% of in BF atm so I suppose is ok-ish well until you realise it doesn’t come with a belt , idea is that you wear it with your own belt ... and in the shop they didn’t have a belt my size, only a miniature one that didn’t go round my waist Confused . You can just fit a phone, card and lipstick, a single key with no keyring might fit ...
but I kinda like the way it looks and I think that for my work where I carry laptop bag this could be ideal for money and travel card...
So for photo purposes I tied the strap it comes with as a belt but had to keep it in place with my arm hence one arm is hiding and the back.
I am wearing some Joseph woollen culottes I found last week in my dress agency.

Gorgeous green trench Elle.

I like the jumper, bo, I am wearing a similar shape (no stripes) Shetland, aubergine wool one from toast today. There's a definite need for a snuggly jumper today, it's so cold.

red, those culottes! I really like the shape and pleats.

BloomedAgain · 02/12/2019 21:19

Nice sweater Bo! Reminds me a little of some recent Marant sweaters in terms of colourway, without the massive logo.
Red that belt bag has reignited my need for one!

XingMing · 02/12/2019 21:43

Awesome trench, elle. It looks wonderful. Buy it now.

Floisme · 03/12/2019 07:40

Wow I love all those photos. The coat looks great Elle and that longer length looks so modern again all of a sudden. I wore my favourite tweed coat yesterday and I caught myself checking it in the mirror and wishing it was a couple of inches longer. The Joseph trousers are dreamy Red and that bag looks very classy. It's a bit cheeky of them not throwing in a belt it but it would probably only have been a poxy plastic one anyway.

And I was admiring bo's jumper just as the latest Me and Em catalogue came through the door with lots of knits <a class="break-all" href="https://www.meandem.com/stawww.meandem.com/statement-cuff-box-jumper-bottle-green" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">like these Polo necks very rarely tempt me but I started wondering whether a wide, funnel neck would be kinder to my jawline. Not that I can make any more big buys before spring.

The other thing that was noticeable from the pics was how the old rule about balancing a wide leg with a more fitted top seems to have bitten the dust

Floisme · 03/12/2019 07:41

Oh sorry that first link doesn't work. Got to go to work now but I'll try again later.

banivani · 03/12/2019 08:11

@ToEllewithIt where is the trench from??? I missed this! It's lovely!

Bo I love the jumper, it really suits you. I was looking at one with wide stripes in Afound weeks ago when I was searching for a chunky jumper but yours is nicer. www.afound.com/sv-se/produkter/may-stripe_5hjgzj9v (I copped on to myself and realised I'd never wear wide stripes. Probably.) Did I tell you about the jumper I saw in a shop here that was 40 % acrylic and cost over 400 euro? Bloody hell.

Red I also love the culottes - god you people are lucky with your finds! I've seen those bags-that-fit-on-belts around and they feel a bit bob the builder but possibly in a good way? I don't think I could carry it off. I'd look like a janitor. Looks good on you!

Floisme · 03/12/2019 08:37

Oh Bob the Builder - what a happy time! My son would be watching the diggers and I'd be watching Bob and Wendy. Sorry I still can't load that Me and Em link and my phone battery's dying but basically it's very big and chunky with a huge funnel neckline and worn with wide leg trees.

Floisme · 03/12/2019 08:38

Trews not trees GrinBloody smart arse phone.

ADVENT CALENDAR 2019

Quick side note: since this is already the third advent calendar and there are only so many variations on a theme out there. For this year I have gone with a broader interpretation that focuses less on hacks and more on inspiration, the slipstream of time we're currently in, and broadening horizons which is separated into four subthemes of a larger 'the eye has to travel' theme.

--

NEW HORIZONS

When the winds of change blow, some people build walls and others build windmills - Chinese proverb

The times are a-changin’ and as much as we like to ignore the reality of it, for the reality isn’t all that inspiring, standing still is quickly no longer becoming an option. We can bury our heads in the sand with unchanging capsule wardrobes and classics that deter the passing of time, that era is coming to an end and making way for new horizons.

Fashion as its designed and how we then wear it is the zeitgeist thermometer it always has been and it will reflect this. It’s time to look beyond ourselves, leave behind the long engrained trenches and safe positions where the default is standing still and to look further, to pastures new and greener, for understanding, new perspectives and unfound treasures. It’s out there, all it requires of us is to reach out.

DAY 3: Puritan utility

Transparency is nothing new, and, frankly, a term that’s become so overused by corporations and politicians alike it deserves to be treated with heavy suspicion. Transparency and fashion are, at first glance, short-lived bedfellows.

Every couple of years or so designers decide to do something with transparency and briefly make it a thing. A thing that usually requires one to go braless or shave in winter and that pretty much meant the beginning of the end. Sensibly so, I might add.

What’s different about it now, less gimmick and more expression. It’s not there to outline or play tricks on the mind through distortion. It is about softening, blurring the hard obstinate obstacles of life in a way we’ve forgotten existed in such polarised circumstances. It’s a breath of fresh air, a purposefully quiet one. One much needed in the ever-increasing noise that never seems to die down.

In that sense, it is unsurprising to see it paired alongside utilitarian shapes and garments. It expresses a new sort of purity with none of the connotations of preserving oneself from being soiled, merely transforming what is there, what exists, what has happened into something else. It is hiding in plain sight, and visible to all who bother to look beyond a first glance.

Love!!!! What a great first post, and it matches our current cold, clear and snowy weather Grin. I haven't noticed the trend but am going to keep an eye out now - I must have noticed it subconsciously because a few months ago I was idly thinking of getting something transparent to wear over something else (I remember the thought, but not what I wanted to cover). I love the very first photo, it's so evocative. Thank you for the big photos too!

ToEllewithIt · 03/12/2019 15:43

Oh wow, never did I think that I would say to myself “I really want a transparent top and skirt set”, but looking at picture 4 is making me have just that reaction. Who is the designer? I’m guessing Marni or Stella McCartney or even VB, but maybe I’m way off? It’s always a fun game to play. I love image 2 as well, how gorgeous. I don’t really see this look on the high street much. We definitely have the sheer thing going on, but most commonly it’s done in a “sexy” way and often black. I’d love to know if anyone has seen anything akin to the images on the high street. When I think transparent I often think of the romantic silhouettes like we see from Simone Rocha, but this is different again. I love it.

The jumper is great bo. Is that Sezane?

I agree flo that the longer length is coming back. I have a thigh-length coat that somehow feels a bit “mean” these days.

bani It’s an Acne one, but bought second-hand so previous season. I had seen it on the dress agency website, but botemp reminded me of it and dare I say influenced its purchase and I’m so pleased with it. As noted it was far too cold really to wear it, but I did anyway!

red love the culottes.

Redandblue11 · 03/12/2019 16:11

Love this time of the year!! And the advent makes it more special. Thank you Bo
The fourth photo is my fav, I could see myself wearing that! Agree that is not something I have seen, other than the transparent bag look, but what I like about this is the matte type effect .

Redandblue11 · 03/12/2019 16:15

Oh actually Rains has a coat like that

XingMing · 03/12/2019 16:35

Thank you for the first post and pictures of this year's Advent calendar Bo.

The Puritan riff on transparency makes it unexpected wearable, even for ageing and less perfect bodies. My heart is won by the white over the orange... picture 4.

botemp · 03/12/2019 16:45

The fourth pic is indeed Stella McCartney but it's an older collection 2012 or 13 iirc (back when she still made exciting things, it's about Stella got her groove back). The other two are from a graduate collection and a lesser known Italian whose name I'd have to look up again. Peter Do (former Céline under PP) does a fair bit of play on transparency but it's not widely sold and debatable on how wearable it is. The South Korean/Taiwanese designers play around with it a bit too.

I think it's difficult to find in any other colour than black in the high street because it looks incredible cheap, it's something that requires a bit of spending on. It's possible that the Stella piece is made from silk, it's actually something that wouldn't be that difficult to make yourself in a nice fabric and it would be about a good high street price.

Jumper is from Acne Studios Elle, sezane has something similar though. Had considered that one but this wasn't that much more money and I already know I like and suit it. Plus not buying something new Halo

Very beautiful pictures, bo, they seem very icy and ethereal. I agree with bani, they match the weather (not snowy here but cold, crisp and frosty). I think the Rains coat is a very wearable version, red.

Africa Rising

How do you dress to your identity when it was historically stripped from you? As proven in Africa and those of African descent fashion can be effectively utilised to claim or change identity and that take on fashion is utterly fascinating. Dressing well can mean not being perceived to threatening and, equally, it can be used as a performance of protest and source of empowerment that pronounces a deep-rooted sense of pride.

Effectively appropriating what is discarded and seen as ridiculous, like bright colours and exaggerated proportions, not merely confined to the body as it actively incorporates the movement of limbs that which sits beneath it, and wearing it with pride and without even a hint of irony. Sampling with an advanced style palette, if you will.

Strong statements that aren’t just about clothes, it’s simultaneously political and exposing social positions. Evoking a vibrant energy that seeks style to connect to be self-expressive within a larger collective identity.
