Love the spotty ones. Not keen on the others.Loathe the pale blue flowery.

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 30/10/2019 15:43

Just to say- I do think Kate is too thin. And that’s not a criticism. It’s a comment on how she has to present herself as a woman. So yes, it is a feminist point.

She doesn't have to present herself as slim, she chooses to, and so would a lot of women her age. It is absolutely not a feminist point!

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 30/10/2019 15:45

I'm going to contradict myself. It is a feminist point, in so far as a woman can now be the size and shape she chooses to be for her own benefit and not to appease a male view of what the ideal might be.

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 15:47

Grin Do you genuinely think that Kate Middleton could be a size 16 abs the media would be completely cool with it?

Blingandrings · 30/10/2019 15:51

She doesn’t have to present herself as being as thin as she is . It’s her choice. That’s feminism. Having a choice. Do you think if William was several stones overweight there wouldn’t be adverse criticism? Of course there would!! If you’re on display all the time you need to be conscious of how you look. It’s the same for both sexes.
I do think she’s underweight but that’s her choice.

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 15:55

But she doesn’t have a choice. She knows what would happen if she put on any weight. Because societal expectations of women- especially celebrity women - is that they are as thin as humanly possible.

EmGee · 30/10/2019 16:05

Agree with you TSSDNCOP - well put. I don't get why people take offense so much on these threads. I must read this thread in a completely different way to others!!

Kate is very slim but she always has been and probably always will be. She is tall and sporty and athletic. And probably eats a very clean diet. I wonder, too, if photos of her are doctored to make her look even slimmer than she is. I was experimenting on my phone the other day and was amazed to discover how much I can do to a photo should I wish - thinner face, whiter teeth, extra blush, remove blemishes. If I can do that, then I guess there are no limits to what professionals can do with their pics.

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 30/10/2019 16:06

But she doesn’t have a choice. She knows what would happen if she put on any weight. Because societal expectations of women- especially celebrity women - is that they are as thin as humanly possible.

I think you're reaching here, Bert. She's thin because she can be. Personally I think women look better thinner - shoot me - until they reach a certain age when they start to look scrawny, and extra weight helps fill out older sagging skin.

I don't know if it's down to discipline or just a very healthy lifestyle, but given how sporty she has always been I think the latter.

Can't help thinking what you'd have to say to someone speculating on MM's inner motives without any actual evidence...Smile

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 16:17

You’re not seriously saying you think that there are no societal pressures on women to be thin? And that if the DofC chose to be a size 16 the media would be cool with that?

FiveTwoFaster · 30/10/2019 16:26

Bertrand - are you a size 16? Is that what this is all about?

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 16:27

Oh don’t be silly.

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 30/10/2019 16:33

No I'm not saying any of that.

FiveTwoFaster · 30/10/2019 16:39

If you think she doesn’t have a choice, why are you criticising her for it?

IME women who feel annoyed by their own weight are the most spiteful about slim women. Dogs about their “iron self control” suggesting they wouldn’t be fun company etc. She has muscled legs, carried three healthy babies to term and is - on that basis, healthy. Enjoying being active, and not overeating doesn’t make her bad company, a bad role model, or morally bereft! Maybe she is all of those things, maybe she isn’t, but to base it on some her appearance is distinctly anti-feminist.

FiveTwoFaster · 30/10/2019 16:40

Er - digs
Not dogs. Jeez.

I love this thread at its most basic level because I love seeing pictures of royal people and their clothing choices. It's a little bit of escapism for me.
I also enjoy when people post interesting social or historical facts. Seneca Falls is a particular font of knowledge who knows so many quirky facts.
I don't always agree with the way events in the news are interpreted but for me that's all part of the interest of this thread. I suspect if we met up in real life we would be a very eclectic bunch with a whole range of life experiences which is bound to make us see things differently. Surely we can agree to differ?
Hope you're feeling better today, Perdito.

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 16:41

“If you think she doesn’t have a choice, why are you criticising her for it?”
I’m not criticising her for it.

MotherofPearl · 30/10/2019 16:48

I do see the point you're making @BertrandRussell, but Sophie - for example - is not as 'thin as humanly possible' (this is not a criticism, just an observation!) and I'm not aware that she's had any negative press about her size/shape? I'm certainly not saying she's overweight at all, but she's not a tiny size 8 either?

Blingandrings · 30/10/2019 16:48

Sure sounds like it

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 16:59

@MotherofPearl- she doesn’t do glamorous gigs and she’s middle aged.
@Blingandrings- I’m sorry. I don’t think I can express myself any more clearly. But it doesn’t matter- you’ve already decided what I think!

Hairydilemma · 30/10/2019 17:00

ThisEnglishlife replying to your valiant effort to bring this back to fashion Smile.

I like the two spotty dresses and (unpopular on here, I know) also quite like the brown one from last week). Not so much the flowery ones.

IfWishesWereFishes · 30/10/2019 17:28

@MotherofPearl there's no comparison between Sophie's profile and Kate's though.

Of course she's under pressure to be thin. Like most women in the public eye. I can't imagine how anyone could try to deny that. Of course it's a feminist issue.

justasking111 · 30/10/2019 17:28

Prince Charles has always taken care of his figure, weight. No-one says boo to that. William and Harry take good care of themselves as well. It is not just women who care

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 17:41

God- I’ve got a picture of me in Scottish gear somewhere.i wonder if I can find it- it’s give everyone a laugh.....:
